Games suffering from NSTFU syndrome (Never-Shutting-The-Fuck-Up) Anonymous 08/27/2025 (Wed) 14:00:06 Id: 0ba501 No. 1697108
This doesn't mean games that have a lot of dialogue or large dialogue trees, like New Vegas or Disco Elysium. We're talking games with the characters will not stop talking. Constant banter, verbose conversations, quippy dialogue, characters explaining and repeating what to do next; commenting on everything they see/think, puzzles being explained before you even grasp them, and so on. Suffering from NSTFU syndrome doesn't mean a game is necessarily even bad, but the writing is often be the worst part of them.
>>1697108 Dad Of Boy. Apparently the second nu-GoW is even worse at this than the first one but I haven't bothered playing it.
(23.35 KB 536x480 revenant creation process.png)

Every gAAAy game from the last 10 years They're all like this now, every single second has to be crammed with bad humor and truism streams of consciousness. >Huh.. A boat? I wonder if we can use that to travel..
>>1697108 Rift Apart is so bad for this it was turning me off an otherwise fun game. It doesn't help the writing is terrible and everybody feels wildly out of character. For me it came to a boil with Torren IV, how Rivet and Clank were babbling on inanely with cringey and superfluous dialogue. The fight with the pirates and the entire Fixer section was line after line of clichéd writing that would feel bad and amateurish even in a student film. "You're always in my way!" "Have you considered YOU'RE the one in MY way?" "No, I'm the protagonist of THIS story!" fuck off please. Fan fiction game.
Every single AAA game like >>1697216 said, normalfags can't be alone even when playing vidya so devs need to cater to them with fucking fictional characters so they can pretend to have friends. You can be alone ingame and the character you're playing as will be constantly commenting on what's going on, it's infuriating.
>>1697108 It makes me miss Navi at the very least she shut up when i did not press the Navi button, same with midna i love her but if Twilight Princess was released now i know i would hate her as she just refuses to shut up.
>>1697381 That's impossible. Any annoyance one could possibly feel towards Midna is instantly transformed into a desire to fuck the annoying out of her upon reaching the brain.
>let's have two narrators who never shut up even when you're doing absolutely nothing Loli Athena is the only good thing about this game.
>>1697108 Every 3D Sonic game since Heroes and every Persona game since 5. I especially hate what they did to the Velvet Room, just completely ruined the introspective tone. It's bad enough that the dungeon banter is just lazy memebait and all the characters became caricatures.
>>1697521 >I especially hate what they did to the Velvet Room This is technically a plot thing but modern Persona fans don't know shit about the games before 3 and it's brought up too late in the game to actually change the room afterwards so the implications fall flat.
Monster Hunter Wilds is really bad about this, it's very area dependent too. Between your hunter speaking full english and spelling out retard-tier advice any time you pass by traps or environment details, the handler constantly talking, etc. You can't even set it to the monhun langauge and just forget about it anymore too, and even if you could the addition of your handler accompanying you and rattling off advice and """guidance""" constantly gets annoying very fast. That's not even getting into the "Story" which is just forcing you to play a Soyny movie game for the entirety of low rank.
>>1697576 Is Philemon retconned or is he just not part of modern Persona happenings anymore?
>>1697617 He's there but they don't mention him since he's not allowed or able to intervene anymore. Theorethically the blue butterflies that pop up here and there are supposed to be his avatars but that's not really touched upon anywhere in the games. False!Igor introducing the place as ``My`` Velvet Room is supposed to be a hint that he is a fake, since Philemon is the true owner.
>>1697576 I know the thematic reason the P5 Velvet Room is harsh, I just meant that the voiced menus throw off the vibe even further. Every time you press a face button, they've got something to say about it, even just idling brings out another voice clip. And going by Reload, that's a permanent addition, they'll never shut up and let you take it all in ever again. Not that there's that much to do in the Velvet Room anymore, everything's streamlined into a fast food menu. The only good thing about nusona Velvet Room is the loli headpats button in Strikers. I know P2 had the best Velvet Room we'll ever get, but still.
>>1697108 Borderlands 3 was so insufferable that even normalfags muted the dialogue.
>>1697108 Most modern JRPGs. Especially ones made by fatlus. I just want to play turned based game.
>>1697258 The way they narrate what's happening is bizarre, the older games never did that. Even the PS3 games didn't do that. The story is terrible too, but I'm biased against multiverses. An odd hallmark of the writing everybody being written and directed to sound socially awkward. >>1697770 The only game I'm aware of people hacking to remove all dialogue.
(347.47 KB 505x373 oh negros.PNG)

>>1697857 >When even fucking reddit is showing ways remove dialogue because even they find it that annoying
(73.02 KB 500x500 619l9koytfL.jpg)

Hear me out. I love Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2, but for the love of all that is holy, these characters just do not shut up. Every 5 minutes there has to be a cutscene explaining everything. The characters have to tell us what to do and where to go, even if we were already heading in that direction. They constantly state the obvious, there's clear and blatant filler segments that wouldn't feel out of place in a FOTM anime. A good chunk of the main quest is oftentimes just doing pointless fetch quests because Level 5 has no idea how to write a story. The entirety of chapter 5/6 is just pointless bullshit that they crank up to 11. As much fun as this game is, I dread ever going back to it.
>>1697944 I thought this was going to be a post about the chatterbox "upgrade" to the Ridepod. NEVER install the chatterbox. You will never know peace again in dungeons.
(75.15 KB 273x365 Forspoken_cover_art.jpg)

(343.04 KB 952x453 Screenshot_20250827_212008.png)

I am surprised Forspoken hasn't been mentioned, as I remember it getting mocked heavily for the characters always narrating. As for a game I might have actually cared for, there was that demo of a Gothic 1 remake, that got shoved into everyone's Steam library, that also had the main character constantly narrating everything he was doing, which is not how it was in the original game. It was so bad, they basically had to scrap everything and start again, though there were other issues with it as well.
>>1697964 >as I remember it getting mocked heavily for the characters always narrating. I wasn't informed of them never shutting the fuck up, but I was definitely informed of the terrible writing. >I JUST MOVED SHIT WITH MY FRICKING MIND
>A Link to the Past: if you aren't strong enough to pick up something then nothing happens and you move on >a couple years later in Link's Awakening: extremely long, unskippable dialogue box pops up and freezes you in your tracks every time you brush up against a rock or a pot before you get the power glove The problem persisted even after I got the glove and forgot to equip it a few times, then it went away on its own after a while for some odd reason. Though this game is fun and has a lot of charm to it, I cannot imagine how such a poor design choice made it into the final product.
>>1697956 At least that can be turned off.
>>1697964 I mean she may have been extremely annoying but she's really hot so i'm conflicted.
>>1697944 That's 90% of JRPGs and a big reason I don't play a big chunk of them. If the plot is getting in the way of my interaction and the gameplay then it's a bother. What's even worse is that there's so many chances for PS1 and PS2 games to give the player some environmental storytelling, and they simply do not and just text dump the shit out of you.
>>1698165 I'm guessing you mean more modern JRPGs. They used to not be so bad about that sort of thing.
>>1698211 xenogears
>>1698119 She's a nigger, go post your bestiality somewhere else.
>>1697370 >normalfags can't be alone even when playing vidya so devs need to cater to them with fucking fictional characters so they can pretend to have friends This also describes everyone who talks about their waifu, it's absolutely not confined to normgroids.
>>1697108 Surprised no one mentioned Viewfinder yet. A really cool game utterly ruined by this.
>>1698119 You have terrible taste in negresses.
(1.16 MB 250x250 disgust.gif)

>>1698333 I wanted to include this in the OP, but I haven't played it and I was also unsure if anybody else would know of it. Supposedly a great game, but wow that writing is something. I was also going to post Neon White but it didn't fit my own definition, lots of badly written cutscenes wasn't the same as dialogue 24/7.
>>1698310 >>1698336 >>1698354 Why do gays feel the need to critique how hot a woman is? You're never going to be aroused by one, so how the fuck would you know?
(376.60 KB 1200x1702 Xenoblade.jpg)

>>1697108 Don't know if that game count but It sure as shit feel like it should. It also probably apply to the entire series and get worse in the sequels. I want to like the fucking game because half of it is alright even with the obvious ass fucking twist story wise that's gonna make me wince when it happen. Actually can't play it in chunks of more than 15 minutes because I just get mega annoyed and I wish there was a mod or something to reduce the dialogue/grunts/whatever in battle to about 10-20% of what it is top. >>1698119 BURN IN HELL, NIGGER LOVER!
>>1697108 Rift Apart is borderline, definitely a big step down from Rat Shit 2016.
>>1697381 It's okay when my waifu does it.
>>1698930 >Go back to your cheese dimension, you cosmic nigger. funny because niggers are more likely to be lactose intolerant
>>1697132 it was so bad they patched it to not have the characters instantly blurt out the solution to puzzles. the game unironically makes you feel like a retard >see puzzle >your sperm spawn immediately tells you what to do step by step before you can even see all the items and then way too often you do the right thing but not do it in the overly specific way the game wants from you so you are just standing there like a dunce while the npc tells you to try again
>>1699612 As others said, this is pretty much all AAA games nowadays. The industry openly designs their games around the intellectual levels of DSP and now you'll never unsee the pattern in basically all sony-movies / "games are art" / "games are intellectual" examples, they were only as successful and marketed because the target audience is a drooling impressible retard.
>>1698799 >I am different So are faggots
>>1698963 Do you mean a step down in quality or a step down in annoyance? Because I think it's better than 2016 as a game but I don't recall that one ever annoying me as much. Probably because it was a non-canon movie tie-in.
I recently rented a cartridge of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 but quickly dropped it as it tried too hard to be quirky every 5 seconds. The Styx sequel had a similar problem when I tried it many years ago on PS4, with the goblin character always replying with a witty comeback. I dunno what's up with that kind of american humor but it's really grating to the ears. Some anons complain about Japanese games but I never had an issue with them in comparison, but then again I stick to the OG voice-acting (you'd have to shoot me to stick with the always subpar English dub)

>>1701875 2016 was technically canon as an in-universe movie but not as a retelling of the first game, blame Qwark it's his script.
(37.74 KB 480x360 HASHTAG GADGETRON.jpg)

>>1701875 Hmmm, I didn't think 2016 would really qualify for this thread because they aren't prattling 24/7, but the lines characters do have are so cringeworthy, you really wish they'd shut up immediately. I remember reacting to this singular line with visceral disgust and audibly groaning. Rift Apart is the only Ratchet I haven't played or seen footage of yet (beyond trailers), so I can't compare.
>>1702103 No, it's that the movie we got IRL is a movie in universe, and the 2016 game is Qwark saying the movie got it wrong and giving his "real" version (which is also wrong because he's a goddamn liar).
>>1702550 I'm just glad both the movie and the tie-in game can be ignored because it's not even a real reboot despite appearing to be one.
>>1702561 I think they're both watchable/playable, but yeah, I'm glad they're not real reboots. I see them as codas to the series. I can enjoy them for their references to the real series. But fuck Rift Apart. I'm not bothering with Sony's attempt to replace Ratchet with a girl (which the character designer said was a tranny, right? "She" has a tail, and female lombaxes don't have tails, so it's canon).
>>1702577 Technically the bitch who claimed the tranny angle did not design her or really anything, and just stated such on Twitter to make people mad. As far as we know the females have tails in the parallel universe she is from, or it could easily be Lombaxes all have different feline tail styles, and the one other female we have seen in the franchise is probably based on a Manx.
>>1702577 Sam Maggs said that and she can't be trusted on anything regarding R&C. She was fired over a year and half before the game's launch and none of her work made it to the final game, she's not even in the credits. She also got into public fights about having created and named Rivet with the actual creators of Rivet and other Insomniac employees, who started airing out dirty laundry about how hostile she was in the workplace. The tail think also doesn't matter because it's not clear if that's actually canon and Rivet isn't even from the same universe. It's annoying to see see that parroted. Having actually played Rift Apart, Rivet does not replace Ratchet. This is another thing I see parroted that isn't true. I don't like Rivet as a character, she's uninteresting and flat with zero personality beyond "being the spunky socially awkward deuteragonist", but that doesn't happen. If anything, Clank is the one replaced, by Kit, who is a considerably more interesting character than Rivet.
>>1703538 Those are some awfully organic looking orifices.
>>1697496 >Someone else played this game I'm fine with Zeus doing funny commentary on some of the monsters/puzzles you are dealing as he is responsible for some of them but this is modern Ubishit writing so it gets annoying real fast especially when everyone shits on Zeus fucking everything that moves but Aphrodite gets a pass and considered a positive for fucking around and manipulating people's hearts since it makes for good stories >Loli Athena is the only good thing about this game. Yes
>>1702626 >or it could easily be Lombaxes all have different feline tail styles No, it's confirmed on the radio in one of the later games (I think A Crack in Time) that female lombaxes don't have tails. The "it's an alt universe and maybe they have tails there" excuse is pretty flimsy when really they obviously just forgot, or, since it's Insomniac, they were doing the poz on purpose. >>1703538 You'll forgive me for not trusting modern Insomniac, the same people who made Peter Parker into a little soyboy bitch so they could replace him with Ultimate Spider-Monkey.
>>1703964 I never played it, I just watched someone play it and immediately realized how offputting it was. This should not have gotten past a vertical slice.
>>1704003 The radio only had a single reference point for females because there was only one female at the time, and even then they weren't sure about it.
>>1705313 People who bring up the radio bit should actually listen to it. It's played as a joke more than genuine canon, the section mostly a reference to how Angela Cross vanished after Ratchet 2.
>>1705413 It's a joke clearly made to reference the seeming contradiction in canon. Yes it's funny, but it's also to patch over what otherwise seemed like an odd inconsistency.
>>1707783 It's just extremely gay that faggots have latched onto it as gospel, and fed into the delusions of a serial game development rapist in the process, just so they can be mad at something.
>>1698211 Ehhh, i wouldn't say that. Alot of old JRPGs had this problem too, especially Final Fantasy. FF4 is particularly bad about it. >be sent on fetch quest to get crystals >every single time, the plot pulls something out of its ass to justify you losing it The worst is when Kain overpowers 4 other party members and singlehandedly steals a crystal from Cecil and his friends, after the ordeal in the secret cave. And he does this in a cutscene no less.
>>1697381 she literally does not. Be in water temple and every 5-10 minutes, the navi C button at the top starts flashing in the corner of the screen like an annpyinig cell phone notification. Rose-tinted glasses retard.

>>1710263 it keeps coming back up even after you press it just to say the same thing about what the main objective is. You either haven't played the game in years, you're retarded, or you're baiting.

Speaking of Ratchet and Clank, when did the series get such a boner for Nefarious? Give us different villains, please. Rift Apart was the biggest Nefarious fellatio fest, and the perfect time to gracefully retire him.
(34.98 KB 720x762 Cortex0.jpg)

>>1711535 Why does the Mario series have such a boner for Bowser? Why does Donkey Kong always seem to have K. Rool lurking about? Why are you retarded?
>>1711634 I mean you can make the same argument for those, too. The far more interesting Mario games are the ones where Bowser's not the bad guy behind everything for the 50th time.
(1.77 MB 1280x720 Crossover.webm)

>>1711634 Nefarious isn't the first villain thought like bowser was for Mario.
(34.27 KB 275x444 Tiger sized laugh.jpg)

>>1711753 fucking Chris
>>1711535 According to some former Insomniac staff, that's on Sony. They wanted a heel like Bowser and Gannon. <<1711634 That comparison doesn't work. Nefarious shows up one game, and a few games later he shows back up, becoming the series villain. It's odd and unnatural, the series went from villain of the week to having a big bad. It's worse because Nefarious is extremely one dimensional, he does not work across multiple entries.

>>1711753 Will he say it?
(12.97 KB 325x325 1537822836032.jpg)

>>1711535 Sony mandate. I think a bigger problem is how awful the writing became, the second R&C started taking itself seriously is the second it became a "skip cutscene" game. Rift Apart is so fucking cringey in its attempts at being cinematic and earnest. The scene in the bar with all the random side characters standing around ready to fight the Emperor as uplifting music plays could be mistaken for a maize farm with how corny it is. I don't even want it to go back to the 2000s edge, it probably wouldn't work regardless; I just want the series to stop being embarrassing to play.
(592.38 KB 1199x691 the T word .png)

This one was really bad. The original Subnautica is known for being an immersive experience with a silent protagonist that players can easily slip into the role of. Below Zero shatters that sense of immersion with a new protagonist and "sidekick" that can't help but spew inane lines at themselves or each other. Unsurprisingly, the story is also very poorly written.
>>1712720 Apparently this studio was a complete shitshow internally. One of the founders fucked off to make AI movies or something and the publisher had to fire him.
>>1712731 That's right now–for Subnautica 2. It wasn't the case during BZ. They were just… retarded. BZ started as just DLC for Subnut.
(43.17 KB 612x406 Dial8.jpg)

>>1712426 wew lad
>>1712153 I only played the PS2 entries and I hear some claim that the series was starting to lose its bite after Deadlocked.
>>1714052 The series picked up a new writer. Oddly, a bunch of the original devs are still there: Brian Allgeier, Gregory Baldwin, Tom Barlow, Chad Dezern, Kevin Grow, if you look through the credits of the first few games you'll see a lot of people in the credits for Rift Apart. I'd say the biggest felt loss was David Bergeaud, the composer, but the music gets immediately better in the first game he left. Quest For Booty was his last Ratchet game and its soundtrack was more completely uninteresting orchestral "cinematic" slop.
I just realized we actually have a R&C thread that's been disused. >>1233432 Feel free to revive it.
>>1698119 If only she looked like that ingame
