Let me explain to you how it actually all this works;
1) There is no such thing as a "Post Limit", it doesn't exist. We could post in the thread indefinitely until the amount of post reaches numbers as high as 3000. HOWEVER once reached the 1000 posts, the post counter FREEZES and stops counting how many posts are in the thread, it stays there stuck at -1000-. Below the thread it would look something like: Posts: [i]1000[i] / UIDs: 203/ Files: 500.
2) However, at a random and arbitrary point after exceeding 1000 posts (1768 post or something), the thread would stop working correctly and would start to have bugs, things like, sometimes not all the posts load, or the thread loads very slow. Among other things that happen at this point. If you've ever participated in a sticky thread on 4chan that exceeded 1000 by far, you've probably noticed this behavior there. This is due to the way the code that loads the thread is programmed, a code that all Chans share. That is why this standardized rule of putting an amount X which is much less than 1000 as the bump limit, is followed. They change the number according to the board and its speed, so that the threads aren't there floating forever and are eventually archived.
3) You can even observe this buggy behavior that I describe, yourself, here:
https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/278106615/! Since desuarchive (like most chans) runs in the same default thread code.
4) In the case of this board, like most boards on 8chan.moe, the bump limit is set at 500 posts, a limit we reached over a month ago.
5) The rules specify that it's okay to start a new general thread about anything, as long as the bump limit was hit in the previous thread. If you check other threads on this board, you will see that the next edition is created when the previous one already reached 500 something posts.
Examples:
>>49322 Old:
>>23 (518 Posts) Gap: 5~ Years.
>>52422 Previous:
>>42136 (510 Posts) Gap: 205 days, Previous:
>>38885 (511 Posts) Gap: 260 days, Previous:
>>35154 (501 Posts) Gap: 242 days, Previous:
>>32966 (505 Posts) Gap: 115 days...
I think you get the drill at this point. What we are doing is perfectly correct and how it works here. Lets just make a new thread every time we get close to 600 posts. I know, no one expected us to hit the bump limit this quick.
