le novel Scribe 09/19/2025 (Fri) 16:27:42 No. 1048
Bonjour /lit/, i've been writing a novel for a while now in which i plan to post online sometime wouldn't mind for some thoughts and criticism on the prologue i've written for it as well as peoples thoughts on my way of writing (i can also post more of what i've written if needed) Bien à vous, Liquid Van Gogh
It's not fun to read. An entire novel written that way — let's just say that if 'Getting Over It' was a book, it would be this. You don't need to show off in front of your readers, you simply have to be honest and convey your thoughts as clearly and as precisely as you can. But your text is borderline gibberish, and I stopped reading it around the third sentence, because unlike Bleak House, which is an example of dense, intricate prose, this exercise of yours felt entirely like wasting my time.
>>1052 OP here, Thank you very much for your input on this btw, since this "not fun to read" aspect of the way I write, as always been in the back of my mind, and I've finally wanted to take it face on with this post For context, I simply write this way just because I enjoy doing it, I like writing in a way that hides it's true meaning from the reader but can still be found if analysed, such as through the words I use, what they're a metaphor for or what kind of picture they paint if that makes sense and so on, since I've tried writing in a more clear and normal way before but, I never liked doing it and found it not as enjoyable and kind of boring, especially when describing a setting But I do agree with how this can be nonsense to the reader since it's basically like Empress Theresa, in how only the writer understands what everything means since they are only writing it from their point of view, but I at least tried to write my book in a way that it can make sense if analysed by the reader, but I understand maybe that's not as fun to read since it may ruin the readers experience as books aren't really meant to be read that way normally, only english comprehension papers kek Thank you very much for this again, maybe once I get more criticism that is similar to yours in the future, I'll completely go back and rewrite a lot of parts of the book that suffer from this if i have a change of heart, but at the moment I just really enjoy writing this way since it makes me happy and I don't really have the intention of making a best seller book or anything, just a book I personally enjoy and would just want to show people occasionally in the same way as showing someone the fruits of their labour :D
>>1058 Just as long as you understand that it's unlikely anyone will ever fully decode what you meant. The thing about writing is that even why you try to make your text clear, unambiguous and easy to read, people will still misread it. They do it all the time. And all that subtle and "deep" meaning people read into old classics or whatever is mostly made up by the readers themselves and whatever the author actually tried to get across is usually more straightforward. But hey if you only write for your own fun, nothing wrong with that.
>>1058 First of all, I appreciate that you are open to criticism, and I understand the desire to be acknowledged by your peers for doing things that you enjoy. >I've tried writing in a more clear and normal way before but, I never liked doing it and found it not as enjoyable and kind of boring, especially when describing a setting Have you tried doing both instead? Hide the puzzle in the easy-to-read text. While it's true that reader's failure is inevitable to some degree, you can manage it by adding narrative layers. If you have clear descriptions and good flow in the foundation of your story, then you can be confident that most readers will understand at least that. You can then put a few metaphors on top of it, and people who read deeper will be rewarded with a more emotional and nuanced description. Then you can hide a philosophical subtext in there, too, and hint at it being there so that readers will know to treat your text as a puzzle. You also say that you mostly write this way because you like it. That is fine, but it conflicts with your request for readers' opinions on the way you write. Do you want to do what you like or do you want others to like what you do? Do you like to write stories that others would like to read? Do you care for their opinion enough to ask their opinion? If so, do you do enough in your writing to show them that you care? These questions can be used as a sort of writer's sanity self-check when needed.
>>1060 That's a good point. Descriptions are a good place to hide subtext, since in terms of plot they're often dead weight but people usually don't find anything amiss even if you have lengthy descriptions, they'll just think it's style or flavor or whatever.
>>1061 And while it's been a long time since I read it, I think Moby-Dick did this a lot. Dialogue could be another place where it doesn't matter if the language doesn't have extreme clarity, some people just speak in riddles you know?

>>1060 Hi OP here again, this is a hand full so i hope you can understand what i mean since i'm not the best at explaining in clear ways what mean sometimes if by "easy-to-read text" you mean just with or without my style of writing yet in a more ordinary way of writing but still hiding secrets in the text, yes, but i didn't enjoy it but i feel like sometimes when it comes to the way i describe a character's thoughts/emotions and settings (sometimes), i feel like the reader can understand what i mean despite me using my style of writing, it's just when it comes to important things like certain story knowledge (i.e. foreshadowing, plot points, a character's reaction/true feelings to something important to the story, philosophy/allegories and things that can reward the reader of analysing my text) i'll usually try to hide it with my style, yet i feel like it still can be found somewhat easy by just looking up what certain words mean, how what i describe mirrors a certain scenario/tone or how i use certain words* i feel like the way i write is similar to the idea of pathetic fallacy or the way certain artists convey emotion/response in what they draw with colours/art styles and whatnot but i use a lot of symbolism and "fancy" poetic ways of writing (at least i try to) if that makes sense answering your final question >writer's sanity self-check when needed. kek i feel more so that people also enjoying my work is like a cherry on top, while it would be great if they did enjoy it, i'm okay if they don't, so i just wanted to get a small peak with this to find out what one of you guys would think as a small idea of that since i feel like my book's biggest negative of people enjoying it is possibly the way i write, as i had this idea of someone enjoying something else about my story (such as the characters and or plot) and them getting invested in it, but there being a barrier between the story and the way i write since it could be hard to follow, since even if i do get like a reader base of 7 people that actually enjoy my book, that could possibly motivate me to change my writing style since it is always nice to have people appreciate your work and i do like being a people pleaser, but my book is basically the next Empress Theresa in the public eye and it's completely barren of people's enjoy, then set that aside and sleep well knowing that at least i enjoyed making it and love it as a story, since it's everything in a story i could want if that makes sense ^ i know this last part may sound like i have a case of Schrodinger's Cat in how basically do care and don't care about what people think at the same time, but its more like how somethings in life you would be happy to have but at the same time you can also do without it if you don't get it, like a flower to smell when you're walking anyways, thank you very much for your input on this as well, sorry it took two days to reply, i wasn't really expecting more than the 1 reply on this so i'll have more of an eye out for more in case :D also i like your point: >and hint at it being there so that readers will know to treat your text as a puzzle. i'll keep that in mind when rewriting early chapters since i think that will definitely help with the problem *sometimes i play with words and give them different meanings, for example i use the word "Hydrangea" as word for Familial Love, or the word "Decree" as a word for a specific goal in someone's life that they want to achieve, made by certain circumstances and sometimes may go against traditional morality to cater to the person's own personal beliefs of what is right or wrong
