Concord - flop of the decade? Anonymous 08/25/2024 (Sun) 00:24:42 Id: 9e29a1 No. 1005109
If you're unaware, the Sony-backed GaaS Concord just launched to an astounding 660 peak players. Not 6600, but six hundred and sixty-six. Currently sitting at 407. This is a flop on a level that is genuinely astounding. Battleborn launched to 12000~ players, LawBreakers launched to 7579. Gollum launched to 768. This game was in development for eight years, is getting an episode on the upcoming Secret Level show, and had a budget estimated at well over $100,000,000. All of that to hit a peak player count rivalling Far Cry Primal on a random Monday. The game didn't even enter Steam's top 500 and is about to drop out of the top 1000. It's a failure the likes of which I can only compare to The Culling 2. I would not be surprised if this game ended Sony's live service ambitions here and now, this is nearly unprecedented in the AAA space.

>>1005109 >CEO of Firewalk Studios is old Bungie CEO Hmmmmmmmm.......
(35.74 KB 636x464 What were they thinking.jpg)

I honestly had no idea this game even existed until the drama with the devs and, memes surrounding how bad its showed up here. I'm looking at steam currently and it's $39.99/49.99 USD/CAD, for what amounts to a poor man's Overwatch but even more pozzed.
>>1005115 It's Bungie management types doing another facefuck with Sony since they can.
>>1005112 Wasn't Harold Ryan the actual CEO of Bungie during that time? Because from what I could gather, Ryan Ellis was the Creative Game Director for Destiny.
>>1005117 Well if you look at the anon who is allegedly friends with a former Bunge dev, the whole company is a self sabotaging bucket of crabs.
>>1005109 >budget estimated at well over $100,000,000 Where did you get this number?
>>997232 >>997315 >>998490 Take with a grain of salt, but Marty O'Donnell was saying similar things in recent interviews with content creators
(20.08 MB 640x320 Reveal.mp4)

>>1005121 The studio has 145 employees and has had this game in development for 8 years. Average gamedev salary is $106,000 in the region. Do the math and it comes out to about $122,000,000. Some estimates are higher if you account for C-suite executives who can easily be paid 7 figures annually, some are lower if you assume they didn't have that many at the studio during its entire development. It's also not counting the game's expensive CGI marketing nor any outsourcing for things like mocap and VA work.
>>1005109 I hope it keeps on happening. I hope they all crash and burn. The rot has reached a point where the only solution for them is total annihilation. >>1005124 Sounds about right. >>1005129 >145 employees and has had this game in development for 8 years I'm reminded of the Age of Empires 2 taunt >You played two hours to die like this? I can't imagine the feeling of that. Spending 8 years of your fucking life working on something that is dead on arrival.
>>1005115 >the drama with the devs Explain?
>>1005133 They had a massive spergout over people not wanting, to play this pozzed mess.
>Firewalk has 170 employees >Average salary in Bellevue, WA is $93,000 >game was in development for 8 years >that alone would put costs around 126 million >that doesn't count literally anything done outside the studio (like the CGI trailer, voice acting, etc.), middleware licenses, the cost of the office/its equipment itself etc. just employee salary I hope we'll get a real budget number before the end of the year, because this might just beat The Acolyte for the year's biggest bomb.

>>1005138 In the umpteenth instance of me plugging Amazing Seasun Games on here, you can straight up recreate the EVA pilots in Mecha Break (you can make nogs as well but obviously that's for Westerners and to get the censors to fuck off). This has mostly flown under the radar because as soon as you insert schnozs people focus on those and not the jiggle physics. Idk how much they spent on MB in comparison but probably a whole hell lot less. They conned the >>>/m/ demographic and the Twitch esport sweaties into sneaking the curves past them.
>>1005144 Pretty much everything sold in US has French on packaging because economics of scale mean making a Qubec specific package impractical. Even my defensive ammo has French on the box (my carry gun and standard cap mags are the only things I can think of that don't)).

>>1005154 The difference is that the jet Concord's crash wasn't its fault. It was just an unlucky chain of events caused by a huge chunk of runway FOD, and could have happened to any plane. Meanwhile I know nothing about this game but I already know from this thread that it 100% deserved to crash.
>>1005150 It's like a nonstop shitty movie.
>>1005156 >The difference is that the jet Concord's crash wasn't its fault. It was just an unlucky chain of events caused by a huge chunk of runway FOD, and could have happened to any plane. What happened is the persons in charge of the whole Concorde shit on the French side did not want to implement physical changes and security measures to prevent this specific scenario that had almost happened already because the US had just agreed for the thing to fly to their country and doing that right after would've "looked bad".

DID YOU BUY YOUR GOTY CONTROLLER ANONS?! Sony seriously thought this game would be big enough to justify a fucking limited edition controller.
>>1005160 You're off by over 23 years. It was approved to fly to the US in 1977, months after it was introduced at all, and the crash was in 2000.
>>1005162 Maybe it was access to a specific airport or something regardless, the accident could've been prevented but wasn't because adding shielding to the fuel tanks would've looked bad in regards of said decision.
>Sony bought the studio after it had spent 5 years developing this and had literally never made a game before Why? >>1005147 Too bad mecha break's height sldier barely does anything.
>>1005136 You think they'll be dissolved for this like how Square-Enix punished Luminous Studios for Forspoken?

>>1005150 Lawbreakers+Guardians of the galaxy+Saints Row... Auto referential humor, deprecating, a rag tag group of ethnically diverse characters where the woman is the mastermind, she also has no sex appeal whatsoever just like the other rest of women in the game (but the men are bare chested and jacked) not to mention she is a massive cunt that you don't feel like protecting, no white men in sight, in its place there is an alien that is clearly supposed to be the white guy that is just as stupid and impulsive as most portrayals of Caucasian males in media... And this is only a cinematic. This failure shouldn't even surprise its developers.
>>1005147 Went to check out this game because it looked fun, they're accepting playtest applications even though the playtest is over and all the servers are down. That was disappointing. >>1005161 How did they convince anyone to make this controller? What kinds of game sales were they projecting? Or did the marketing team not even care and just assumed there would be sales just because the game took a long time to produce?
>>1005150 I want every subhuman who participated in making this to die painfully in Minecraft.
>>1005171 The question isn't if, it's when. Are they going to let it flounder for 6 months before going FtP, then shut it down when people still don't care, or is Sony going to shut them down ASAP?
>>1005176 >How did they convince anyone to make this controller? What kinds of game sales were they projecting? Or did the marketing team not even care and just assumed there would be sales just because the game took a long time to produce? Soyny is totally out of touch with reality.
>>1005176 >How did they convince anyone to make this controller? I have NFI about any of it anon. This game shouldn't have gotten passed the pitch phase, much less the merchandising phase and yet somehow, some-fucking-how, here we are.
>>1005208 I mean 8 years ago making an Overwatch clone sounded like a good idea if you wanted normalfag money. not that it was actually a good one because anyone with two braincells would have realized everyone had the same idea, and OW had pretty much cornered the market by itself.
>>1005210 >and OW had pretty much cornered the market by itself Isn't that almost entirely due to the porn and excellent marketing of the game? Two factors that it seems like EVERY clone as failed to follow-up with.
>>1005233 The porn did all the marketing for them. Whoever designed the girls deserves more recognition.
>>1005210 Players have probably been looking for an Overwatch replacement since it committed suicide, it's amazing how all these fucking clones choose fugly UCLA gender studies students instead of babes. I actually looked up UCLA gender studies people and they are significantly more attractive than the grease ogres in this game
>>1005233 >Two factors that it seems like EVERY clone as failed to follow-up with. Paladins (the HiRez OW clone) honestly wasn't too bad at riding the OW hype for what it was.
>>1005210 Good point. At the start of development, they made the dubious decision to make an OW clone, and as they years went on and they got deeper in, they felt like they should just finish the game instead of stop and shelve their work due to the decreasing chances of making a profit. >>1005238 >Whoever designed the girls deserves more recognition I don't disagree anon, but the designer really didn't do anything revolutionary either. He or she seems to be skilled in knowing what makes women appealing, as well as knowing how not to overdo it. The archetype of the tall, cool, leggy French woman is popular, so they just made that into Widowmaker and gave her purplish skin for lore reasons. It's clear that people like the idea of the spunky, cute, energetic Asian girl, so the designer just took all of that and put her in a bodysuit. What character designers for other games struggle with is trying to cram too much into a character's design, along with making them look unappealing in general. They don't let the voice lines, written lore, and even the playstyle demonstrate the character's personality or motives.
>>1005241 Speaking of OW clones. Remember Battle Borne? Yeah me neither but it was stupid of them to strangle themselves challenging OW

Well you see anons, the situation might look dire, but this is just the beginning of a massive success. You see, hating and loving a game, are just two degrees apart, the fact that there is this much hatred and vitriol against the game, means that gamers are extremely passionate about it, and want good things from the game. Now the current position might not look good, but as I always say, velocity is more important than position. As long as they keep on releasing content, not too good mind you, wouldn't want the cattle to have too high of an expectation, at a rapid pace, the people will flock back to Concord. First we gain their trust, by releasing a lot of good content, make it free if necessary, then we lock them up in the game loop by having high retention rate, and then we start squeezing them up for money. It's how I saved Destiny 2, and if they follow my guidelines, I am sure Concord will be just as good. Remember, a game can be shit at launch, but as long as we keep on working and fixing it, it will eventually be good. If you want to hear more about my revolutionary ideas and how I saved Bungie with Destiny 2, check out my GDC talk. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=ZLbvMWEAoyY

>>1005161 They really thought they did something with this
>>1005185 >Are they going to let it flounder for 6 months before going FtP, then shut it down when people still don't care, or is Sony going to shut them down ASAP? My money's on "flounder". These sorts of disasters have people trying desperately to recoup losses and zombie the project on in a bid to convince (((stockholders))) the losses aren't quite as bad as the media says while those who can get their parachutes ready. It's rarely "quick and easy axing".
>>1005161 >>1005176 >>1005208 Consider the 2 following situations: >You sell hamburgers at a specif price point >Lots of people buy the burgers and you make your money Scenario 2: >You sell hamburgers at the same price point >Not many people buy the burgers >You can't raise the price point on the burgers or else less people will buy it >You start selling french fries to the limited number of people who already buy your burgers >You make more money this way. If you have a smaller consumer base and cannot grow that consumer base, the only way to make more money is to get those consumers to buy more things from you. The concord controllers are selling for 84.99 A standard black controller sells for 69.99 The cost differences for manufacturing are likely negligible so thats over 15 dollars of additional income plus the existing profits margins on controllers from the few people who buy that controller. The costs of making the game is sunk. You cannot do anything about it. All decisions moving forward have to ignore the costs of developing the game and look at any additional costs incurred and the margins on those new costs. Controllers margins are likely very good, over 100% mark up I would wager so its a no-brainer.

Man i miss this type of threads Not everyday you see AAA release that is pozzed up the ass with pronouns, filled with ugly as sin characters and completely banked as the next big thing™ completely FLOP and went under the first Chink AAA game. >>1005406 Yeah, the creator of Spy Kids is infamous for just how good he is at keeping budget low. >>1005492 This isn't unique to gaming, the "It's Good, Actually" phenomenon is something you'll see a lot in regards to bad media, especially media that's baffling or makes strange artistic choices. It's called reevaluation. There's an album called My Teenage Dream Ended that's truly something else. The story behind it is actually quite tragic and I won't make fun of it, it's about the actual story of the singer's accidental pregnancy as a minor, the abuse she received from her family, and the death of the unborn baby's father in a violent car crash. The actual music however is indescribable, dubstep noise pop is the closest genre salad I can fit to it. The album was widely mocked on its release and considered one of the worst albums of the year, but only a few years later it was seen as an avant-garde masterpiece. Go listen to it for yourself, it's only 26 minutes. >>1005498 >Don't act like a fucking retarded Journo Yeah, because noticing the regular, daily ~2 million player increase, which shouldn't happen at all if it really has global popularity, is such an "awful take". There are tons of "I'm Chinese but using English" positive reviews and revisionist reviews about the game being "China's first AAA". It's unnatural unless the Chinese market really is carrying the game on its back. Of regular Western players, I predict maybe 200k-to-500k, nowhere near one million.

I don't think Voodoo preacher here is still a preacher in the final release, I would've seen it at least mentioned ONCE somewhere at this point and it makes little sense for these Californian faggots to depict Christianity even slightly positively. I just don't understand how a company can spend eight years on a project this simple without either some major reworks happening (Any Valve game), the project being put on hold for a few years and restarted/continued with a new team (GFB Relink, for a recent example), or the studio getting ping-ponged around between different companies. The only other theory I have is the game was basically finished and all this dev time was spent making these 3DCG animations and lore videos to have a bunch to release on a schedule after the game releases to keep hype going, but that seems kind of counter-intuitive, as you would probably want to release at least some of those prior to launch and the marketing department did none of that. Concord is set to appear on Amazon Prime's video game advertisement called Secret Level on December 10, 2024, directed by Deadpool director Tim Miller. Think the game will be alive by the time it airs? https:// archive.is/vEYhT Also, I'm surprised ProbablyMonsters is not getting shat on nearly as much. It is basically a refuge of Destiny and Bungie pals, a giant money laundering operation. ProbablyMonsters raised $200 million to create three studios and the only product so far is Concord. https:// archive.is/bE5qB The other two studios funded by that money are Cauldron Studios for a single player adventure game, and Battle Barge, which is the Torchlight devs. ProbablyMonsters created another studio in April 2024 called Hidden Grove with Destiny/Bungie losers. https:// archive.is/5u8Bg If one looks at the original partnership announcement for Firewalk with Sony, it is the same song and dance about experienced devs. https:// archive.is/SZx0N
>>1007862 > Think the game will be alive by the time it airs? It'll probably be on life support with the PS5 players or F2P >the rest Can't wait for more blunders of that level.
>>1007862 The other thing not being mentioned is the involvement of the Chinese in all of this. NetEase invested $100 million into Bungie in 2018. https:// archive.is/BlYvY NetEase bought Quantic Dream, the publisher of DustBorn, in 2022: https:// archive.is/PEvBk NetEase also owns BulletFarm and Jackalope Games. NetEase invested $120 million into Kepler Interactive, which is involved with A44, the maker of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn of Sweet Baby Inc fame. https:// archive.is/lAZtb https:// archive.is/QhnFh https:// archive.is/vd8HA Alexis Garavaryan of Kepler Interactive worked for Tencent, which owns TiMi Studio Group, which works with Xbox Game Studios, Pokemon Unite, Call of Duty Mobile, etc. TiMi opened a studio in Montreal and has hired many former Ubisoft employees. China is making a large push into the video games industry. They are buying up Western devs and pozzing them, while opening their own studios in America to push games. I find the timing of the release of the monkey game, made by former Tencent devs, to coincide with Concord and Dustborn, very interesting considering the ties of both studios to China. From Red Thread Games about page, creator of Dustborn: >Why “Red Thread”? The concept of the red thread is universal, and signifies a deep connection between things: thematically, emotionally, physically. In Chinese legend, the gods would connect certain individuals with an invisible red thread — and these individuals were thus destined to meet, form a connection and help each other. Initial funding announcement of ProbablyMonsters incuding the dev team formation: https:// archive.is/Hx355 >In July 2019, ProbablyMonsters closed a private $18.8 million Series A round led by Jerry Jones, Owner / President / General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys, and John Goff, Founder and Chairman of Crescent Real Estate and Goff Capital; Luther King Capital Management affiliates; gaming executive and venture capitalist David Oxford; among other private investors, to fund its ongoing growth.

>>1009299 There's a reason I put in in quotes. With that said from what I have seen the game is less buggy and they did overhaul the gameplay, plus releasing an expansion pack for it, so I disagree on the notion that it never gets better and never improves, considering how buggy it was at launch.

>>1009306 That's a symptom of open world games in general though, the ones with 'content' are copypasted to shit usually, tes helped start this shit.
>>1009240 t. desperate shill. Everyone involved will go bankrupt.
>>1009247 People tend to rag on about E.T. as being "the worst game ever" because it caused the game crash but that had little to do with the quality of the game. It's actually not that bad of a game. If anything it's a bit too ambitious for a second generation console game, particularly one that lacks enough memory to hold an entire screens worth of data at once. The problem is that Atari expected it to be the 2600's Bloodborne. They printed more copies than there were 2600s in existance in the hopes that it would be a system seller. It crashed Atari and then subsequently the western game industry not because it was bad but because they fucked up the economics of the whole situation.
>>1009311 >tes helped start this shit. And Minecraft contributed to it. I hope we can soon get past the open world meme.

>>1009342 It's nothing unusual or controversial, it's just how people act: they watch a movie/tv show that is popular, find out that it's based on other type of media, they then go buy that type of media. It's what toy companies did with cartoons and anime. It also worked with the Fallout TV show, it made some people play Fallout 76, until they quickly dropped that piece of shit.
>>1009286 >though it was noted for having possibly the highest return rate in history at the time: 26% At the time? Something has beaten it outside of mandatory recalls?

>>1009384 In Minecraft?
>>1009316 >>1009320 There's a couple other factors that people leave out: >Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 was actually the game that "started" Atari's downfall due to, again, overambition as it was a "code-accurate" port to the original arcade game and the "most accurate" home version of the game until consoles were finally able to emulate 1980's arcade machines >Atari was already riding high with Spielberg after the massive success of the Raiders of the Lost Ark video game, which was THE killer app back in 1982, and were expecting a repeat >Atari was owned by Warner Bros. at the time (Practically everyone forgets this), and WB had already been kneecapping Atari's gaming division (Preventing the release of several successor systems) for years because the 2600 almost literally "printed money" until it didn't and then they couldn't get rid of the company fast enough >>1009358 >Something has beaten it outside of mandatory recalls? Probably Myth 2

>>1009316 I have a hard time believing that Bubsy 3D or Superman 64 are the still the worst games ever when stuff like Garten of Banban 2 or Redfall exists. >>1009244 I wish Sony could be bullied back into being a japanese company. Just how like all the bullying with the launch of the PS3 forced them to become more western and dedicate themselves to 'mature cinematic experiences'.
>>1009504 There's different tiers of bad, Superman 64 falls within the rushed and uninspired and Bubsy 3D in the experiment gone wrong Concord had 8 years to stop development and failed under every single aspect that isn't graphical fidelity, as a game is better than both Bubsy 3D and Superman 64 but as a commercial product it (alongside Dustborn and Goodbye Volcano High) will have to be studied by devs and economists for generations. It's not an exaggeration to say that it will have the same cultural impact as Gone Homo or Doom in the gaming industry (not necessarily gamers but rather devs and investors who aren't too indoctrinated yet)

>>1011212 >failed under every single aspect that isn't graphical fidelity I've seen videos showcasing even the graphics fall apart once any kind of interaction is needed. There's tiny objects placed around the maps and they're completely static, being as static and indestructible as a wall, while every surface has the same poor looking and quickly vanishing bullet hole decal pasted on it when shot. GoldenEye 007 was 27 years ago and had better object physics, and those were considered comedic even then: Objects shot would get better looking bullet decals, darken as they lost health, then eventually explode leaving behind a wrecked model (some of which could be destroyed further).
>>1005109 >mfw >/pol/ was right BLAAACKROOOOOOCKKKK
>>1006821 wHAT EVEN IS NORMALFAG ANYMORE?
>>1006821 >>1011388 This is interesting, because when the term normalfag was coined there was something people call the "monoculture". It was that broadly shared culture across the US; everybody knew what the #1 song was, everybody watched the same shows, and everybody knew the same artists. Example I see noticed is how the Cheers season finale had over 90 million people watch it. You would never see that for anything today. Since the early 2000s "monoculture" has been slowly dissolving and culture has atomized into niches and subcultures, and the pandemic effectively ended it. Do you know what the #1 song is at the moment? Do you know what any #1 song from this entire decade has been? Even the concept of the "popstar" is dying, Taylor Swift is one of the only big ones but she's mostly popular with white women, artists like Michael Jackson who were popular with basically everybody are gone. One of the last real remnants of monoculture are blockbuster movies, specifically Marvel, but even that looks like it's fading. The monoculture doesn't fully exist anymore and with that there are fewer "normalfags", too. I guess MrBeast and Marvel are normalfag media?
>>1011411 >Do you know what the #1 song is at the moment? Without using Google I'll say a Taylor Swift song? I don't know the names of them.
>>1011557 maybe it's that song people reference whenever they call an eceleb a pdf file
>>1008582 >PSNProfiles For future reference, it's opt in to be tracked on there. They label GTA5 on PS4 as having 1.8 million owners (most owned game on the website), where most sales data I can see on places like VGChartz are 10 times that. 1200 people who would willingly confess to owning that shit times 10 would be approx. 12000 copies on PS5. >>1011411 >monoculture The only recent (within ~4-5 years) Film Theory video I watched covered the exact same concept, he cites it as a big reason why there's so much divisiveness in society today. It was inevitable considering how much media gets produced and how easy it is to access, still hard to determine how good that is overall though. >Do you know what any #1 song from this entire decade has been I looked at a list, recognized 9 song names total, and of those only 3 I'd actually heard. >I guess MrBeast and Marvel are normalfag media? Arguably it would still be whatever's the most popular/most in the public conscious, so yeah those two would be a good barometer for "peak normalfaggotry"
>>1011646 >where most sales data I can see on places like VGChartz are 10 times that. VGChartz estimates their numbers, they're not a reliable source.
>>1005109 The sad thing is that this garbage would have sold better if it had taken two years to develop instead of eight, and had come out when Guardians of the Galaxy was still relevant and Cheeto-man was president. >>1011653 >refreshing So the tactic is to just say the opposite of whatever the critics do without offering a explanation?
>>1011667 The term is gaslighting.
>>1011411 What an interesting observation, and it makes sense. There really is no pop culture anymore. Everything is sub-genres and niches.
>>1011761 The fall of monoculture inevitably follows the rise of diversity, which causes conflicts that alienate people from each other.
>>1011709 With playground insults and summoning bots to upvote and ratio the wrongthinkers, similar to a soundboard.
>>1011411 >Do you know what any #1 song from this entire decade has been? My guess is either Despacito, Old Town Road, Uptown Funk, or See You Again. >Even the concept of the "popstar" is dying, Taylor Swift is one of the only big ones but she's mostly popular with white women, artists like Michael Jackson who were popular with basically everybody are gone. While you're right that its definitely been on the decline, there are still plenty of prominent artists. For example Bruno Mars is still pretty huge. >One of the last real remnants of monoculture are blockbuster movies, specifically Marvel, but even that looks like it's fading. That's because Hollywood and Marvel keep shitting the bed with quality, but also keep in mind that it hit its popularity peak ever in 2016 with Endgame. They can still have huge successes though, just not on that level without putting in the effort. For example, the new Deadpool moviee made over a billion dollars recently. I personally think monoculture is shit anyways (not that it didn't have certain advantages), and I'm glad more things exist and cater to my personal interests nowadays, rather than being forced into shit I'm expected to pay attention to to "stay in the loop". Either way, there are still certain things that are clearly strong examples of American monoculture, like the NFL for example (even though it doesn't really deserve to be after all the anti-American bullshit they've been pulling).
>>1012150 Oh, also forgot to mention the impact of foreign cultures on America, with shit like the explosion of K-Pop, the rise of anime, foreign content creators and streamers (e.g. vtubers, mukbangs, etc.), and Japanese gaming giants like Nintendo, Sega and Playstation. The more interactions differing cultures have with each other, the more they can change and shift.
>>1012157 >The more interactions differing cultures have with each other, the more they can change and shift. Wouldn't it be the opposite? The more each culture blends, the more it creates a worldwide monoculture?
>>1012161 Eh, I've never heard of anything truly unifying or reaching across the entire world's cultures (unless you count what general American culture has done to the world, but that might be a solipsistic viewpoint). Maybe in the future, but we're not there yet.

Another journo going to bat for Concord. https://archive.is/AHVAV Read through it, it's a strange article. Well this explains a lot. Check out how one of the lead artists for Concord drew Asuka and Rei. Specifically Amanda, the one mentioned here >>1007514 https://archive.is/RwcAu She also wants anyone who disagrees with her to eventually never play any video games again. https://archive.is/JsSjX Tried finding the original, but of course her tweets are protected now.

>>1012297 I hope so too, we'll just have to see. I suspect, as with others like her, that she does not work on video games because she enjoys video games. She wants to take over the space, drive out what she sees as "evil" without replacing it with anything "good." She wants to raze it all to the ground then walk away when there is no money left to be made. >>1012298 That's because the artist is afraid of drawing normal shaped asses. They intimidate and offend her. And even if she did attempt to make Asuka or Rei look remotely female in shape, she'd likely be canceled by her peers for "sexualizing" her.
