It seems like people are trying to follow in the footsteps of a few popular pieces of media and get some of that success for themselves. Not that making a video game is easy or anything, but it is pretty simple to turn the whole doppelganger/mimic scenario into something creepy. Make something that looks and feels familiar, like a human, but add little details that make the player feel like something is off. Maybe the character's smile is a bit too big, or they stare directly at the player without blinking. It doesn't take a lot of programming or knowledge about horror tropes.
