You can form morality codes even in deterministic frameworks. Calvinism had that "predestination" where you are either born as NPC damned to hell or rich person predestined to go to heaven; then *poof* and you got capitalist USA. Also yes I wouldn't blame the machine but I would modify it to maximize the utility. Same goes for human society. Thus free will is not a necessity for proper discussion. Your reaction kind of reminds me the line "If god does not exist, everything is permitted", I guess you are an atheist thus you would say that you found morality even without god. Then you can go step further and try that without free will.

> you can't rape someone because maybe they're horny and would enjoy the sex by the end.
Because rape would almost certainly cause a long-lasting trauma outweighting the "maybe would" enjoy, i.e, rape has negative utility in this case and it is hard to think of realistic example where rape would be choice with positive utility. But there are other crimes that are notorious for being unlawful but somehow understanbable: murdering a person that you believe is dangerous to you and others, stealing expensive meds for your loved ones.

It is extremely unnatural but does it mean it is wrong? Nature (planetary biosphere) can't sustain our current attempt on perpetual bliss. Such attempt could destroy the ecosystem and we all suffer die, i.e. creating negative utility. However if we create technology that improves the bliss sustainability, then I would say that technology (representing the unnatural) is good. In Twinkle Star you had nice technological post-scarcity society, yes they became overdependent but they didn't shut down the AI either.
> if Chronost wins, we've essentially reduced humanity's future potential to zero
Do we need potential and how would you measure it? Do you need any new skills if everyone else is already happy and don't need anything from you? The need for greater potential is there because of scarcity, without it they are meaningless.
But I get it: Chronost world is not appealing, but isn't Nico Garden (or any other fairy queendom) just the same thing except it is a Queen instead of cosmic horror that serves as a sustainer? Consequentially, I see no difference.
