Dragons + Puppies Respawned, Hugos On Life-Support Leader 04/27/2017 (Thu) 02:39:23 Id: 0abb7a No. 330515
Old thread still 404s it only had about 3 posts anyway - relevant links here: Dragon Awards Nominations - http://application.dragoncon.org/dc_fan_awards_nominations.php Noms close July 24th 2017 and it's free to vote. Also, nominations for this years Tor Book Awar I mean this years Hugo Awards have been announced - http://archive.is/omIW8 Voting closes July 15th - if you're eligible to vote you should have been sent a link. Aside from the obvious comedy entry or two via the Rabid Puppies it's merely a coincidence that Tor Books has so many nominations yes it is. not a clique no 'Best Dramatic Presentation - Long Form' = Best Film - and . . . Ghostbusters?

Traditional book publishing - in the US controlled by the 'Big 5' - which aside from Baen Books are basically sjw converged, has been taking a hit from the ebook market, especially self-published/indie books. Not so says the Grauniad - 'Everything's fine la-la-la', 'Pfft! That Kindle is sooo last week', etc . . . https://archive.is/1eSi3 >But the latest figures show a dramatic reversal of fortunes, with sales of ebooks plunging . . . says the blurb under the headline >plunging Then they go on to report: >They exclude self-published books, a sizable market for ebooks. la-la-la
>>330524 >out of touch newspaper publisher insists print is doing just fine They're part of the fault print is dying.

Meanwhile, in Canada: >The editor of the Writers’ Union of Canada’s magazine has resigned after complaints over an article he wrote in which he said he doesn’t believe in cultural appropriation. http://archive.is/wYGyM >I’d go so far as to say there should even be an award for doing so — the Appropriation Prize for best book by an author who writes about people who aren’t even remotely like her or him. The Appropriation Prize actually sounds pretty good. Guaranteed Salt

Recent Puppy-related shenanigans via MHN: http://monsterhunternation.com/2017/06/13/a-monster-hunter-nation-opinion-piece-mike-glyer-is-a-scumbag/ or: https://archive.fo/qQ7JO tl;drsort of SciFi gatekeeping site File 770 or Vile 770 or File 666 has recently blackballed author Jon Del Arroz after his attempts to correct their narrative about him were shut down. https://archive.is/a0Nt4 (Chive doesn't say a lot - fagbook thread probably has more.) I'm not on fagbook Things then took a turn when, among others, Sad Puppy founder Larry Correia chimed in on the fb thread. Long story short -it ended up with Mike Glyer, who runs File 770 - and who has an astonishing 55 Hugo nominations nothing fishy about that - move along - taking a dig at Correia by claiming File 770 is more popular than Monster Hunter Nation (Correia's site). Glyer presents the evidence - the Alexa rankings of the 2 sites - see pics. Yes - look at the pics.

Another week, another Sci-Fi award . . . This time it's the Locus Awards - a magazine and website devoted to Sci-Fi. Winners were announced on 24 June: http://archive.is/ia6T6 No convergence in Sci-Fi here - Tor Books doing well again purely by sheer excellence, above and beyond all else. Tor has won Best Publisher at the Locus Awards 25 years in a row - keep up the lockstep good work guys!
>>330854 And here I always thought File 770 was one of the moderate sites.

More marketing tips from socjus authors: Or How To Drive Readers Away: 'Here's Why Sci-Fi Authors Will Always Tell You To Fuck Off' - https://archive.is/YI0f5 Also featuring obligatory hair dye. >All four authors lingered on the inherent absurdity of the notion that science fiction is entertainment and therefore shouldn’t be political. >“There’s never a place where the politics end,” Have got to post that again >“There’s never a place where the politics end,”

'Does the Hugo really represent fandom?' http://archive.is/bDmBq Which poses the question of 'white males' being excluded because white males. It's a short article, so doesn't take long to read. Then the comments if you're low on salt . . . Which start with Salty McNarrative banging the drum that the Hugos are in line with other Sci-Fi awards, so all is well, nothing to see here! Except the other awards are run by gatekeepers too Veers off into much projection, goalpost moving, Republicans bad, etc. >It’s hysterical to see Republicans complaining about liberals taking over the sciences when Republicans as a whole tend to be actively anti-education, anti-intellect, and anti-science. Guess what — liberals are happy to do the scientific investigations that conservatives constantly ridicule, ignore, hinder, and try to defund at every opportunity. As the goon says to the puppy supporter: >you’ve got everything going for you except the facts.

The ballot for this year's Dragon Awards has been announced: http://awards.dragoncon.org/2017-ballot/ or: https://archive.is/oQ2C7 There's various book categories, as well as comics, games, TV and film. The Verge, showing no bias except using the cover from Scalzi's book as it's image and making sure to denounce the Puppies, also has the list: https://archive.is/03daU File770 does too - going one further by adding scores based on ratings from Goodreads - another completely unbiased sjw site: https://archive.is/XazmX Also, that first category - Best SciFi Novel - sees sjw fave Scalzi pick up a nomination. Fair enough, except since the ballot was released, he's decided to withdraw: http://archive.is/J25ct Projection and me me me me, not a bit - and nothing to do with the idea that he may not win in an open vote. Best not chance it, eh? And comments turned off Winners announced early September.

Dumping some links - couple of interesting posts from According To Hoyt: While they focus on writing/SciFi tropes, comparison is clearly made for the current climate. First a guest post about the 'all female society' - a known SciFi staple: https://accordingtohoyt.com/2017/08/09/the-myth-of-the-peaceful-woman-by-outofthedarkness/ or: https://archive.is/BECMq Second a re-post from June 2014 before GG! about continual victimhood: https://accordingtohoyt.com/2017/08/08/dont-be-a-victim-a-blast-from-the-past-from-june-4-2014/ or: https://archive.is/voEIg Often these reposts, particularly from within the last 5~10 years or so - and which may well have gone unnoticed - can be very relevant, like they were written yesterday.
(517.49 KB 599x433 sealion1.png)

Reposting this from other SP/Dragons bread: In their ongoing bid to put themselves out of business whilst simultaneously boosting indie sales, traditional book publishers have started hiring 'sensitivity readers' to edit books before going to print. These are not proofreaders or copy editors looking for punctuation or grammatical errors etc, these are super-special snowflakes looking for content that might be offensive. Heat Street - http://archive.is/cu8cS Literary Hub - http://archive.is/bR6MM Not sure if the books will then feature 'Sensitively Edited' on the cover - a sure sign not to buy if they do. Once again it's just publishers bowing to socjus pressure. Be wary of this shit seeping into comics, game dev, etc. Btw, ask a snowflake and they'll say it's not censorship. Other relevant links from other bread concern the Hugos - Worldcon is on this week?: This year, Worldcon is in Helsinki, Finland, on 9th - 13th August: http://www.worldcon.fi/ Also, the Hugos this year have changed the voting rules because reasons: http://www.worldcon.fi/wsfs/hugo-new/ What effect that will have on the final ballot we'll have to wait and see.
(338.83 KB 512x512 weeehooon.png)

Worldcon took place this weekend which means it's Hugo time: The sjw conVerged article has the usual 'diversity', 'women', 'Puppies bad', etc and has the full list of noms/winners - https://archive.is/3RfL0 One thing you may notice is that you've probably never heard of most (if not all) of them - and you will likely never hear of most of them again, such is the current way of the Hugos. Compared to 2015/16 this year's Hugos have been more low-key - both Puppies groups basically said 'forget it' for the awards show itself - leaving the socjus clique to their own circlejerk. As a result, far fewer outrage headlines for the clickbait media. With nothing to shout about - cue damage control - bury the story, move along. Heard a rumour that YouTube videos covering the Hugo awards live had blocked the comment sections. Would like if someone else can confirm this, but it wouldn't be a surprise.
>>330515 Looks interesting, somebody asked on Twitter if we'd be there. Maybe next year we can apply :)

>>331050 Definately worth a visit I'd say - and attracts a big crowd. But hold your horses - shenanigans are afoot: Last year was the first year for the Dragon Awards - the second Awards have yet to take place and things have already taken a turn. As mentioned here >>331025 the idea of authors withdrawing their nominations had cropped up. Another author, Alison Littlewood, also wanted to withdraw, the reason being that her book had been nominated by a member of the Rabid Puppies. Originally, the Dragon Awards refused withdrawal: Locus mag - refusal of Scalzi + Littlewood - https://archive.is/tTSc9 Littlewood's blog - https://archive.is/LoqRI Yeh about that: Now the Dragon Awards have caved - allowing Littlewood - and also by request NK Jemisin - to have their books removed from the Awards ballot. http://awards.dragoncon.org/a-new-day-and-a-fresh-perspective/ or: https://archive.is/atPMq >And then, over the last couple of days, we got an earful from our fans and others. >we got an earful from our fans and others. >and others. Who could that be I wonder? :) As stated in the link, voting for the Awards has been extended to accomodate this, and also: >After this year’s awards . . . we’re going to take a hard look at the way we do things at the Dragon Awards. Dragoncon states that the Awards are about, and for, the fans: >It’s a fan’s choice award, plain and simple. >We have strong faith in the integrity of the Dragon Awards ballot because it was created by fans, That the Awards are in recognition of work done by the authors and other content creators, it is not about them - the fans come first.

Posting a link: Post by writer Christopher Nuttall, commenting on fan-cons, with an aside on the Goolag memo: https://madgeniusclub.com/2017/08/23/that-which-divides-by-christopher-nuttall/ or: http://archive.is/AA4YQ Cons have clearly been a target for socjus - there's some threads on this board - but the result seems to fall into the same pattern each time - sjs insert themselves/take over a con, id politics gets pushed to the fore, fans get turned off, con loses popularity. Cons taking this route see the fan numbers attending drop off, and the money stream dries up. Fans go to cons for the love of the genre, not forced politics. Quote in pic is from the top of the post - which in the text links to this write up from 2015 by Jay Maynard, commenting on sjs banging their political drum in the open source community. Boy, they do get around https://medium.com/@jmaynard/coraline-ada-ehmke-argues-that-open-source-is-a-political-movement-and-that-it-should-honor-and-f8776ac607bf or: http://archive.is/8TkSm Of course, Maynard is right - a computer doesn't care who writes the code - what matters is does the code work?

Update follwing this post >>330964 from Lela Buis blog regarding the Dragon Awards. http://archive.is/4ocib The post itself isn't much - but again it's in the comments - eg: first one. >The diversity issue only matters if you consider the Dragon to be a real award. If you think of it as a fake award meant to boost the sales of books by white supremacists So Dragons not a 'real award' - and then to-and-fro in the rest of the comments = Dragons bad, Hugos clean + not corruptable, and 'alternative facts' are now a thing.

Sad Puppies founder Larry Correia has had some ammunition/bullets made up with the Monster Hunter logo (his Monster Hunter book series, not the game). I don't claim to know anything about this stuff so don't know if it's a good deal etc. Bit of fun really and Correia is a big gun nut: http://monsterhunternation.com/2018/01/10/ammunition-and-bullets-with-the-mhi-logo/

In related book news - bookstore Barnes & Noble have decided to fire pretty much all it's full time staff. It's an effort to 'save costs' - replacing experienced staff with minimum wagers. Guess it will work out fine and dandy for Amazon The next B&N shareholders meeting should be interesting. Publishers Weekly: https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/bookselling/article/76050-layoffs-hit-barnes-noble.html or https://archive.fo/N4Ngw The PW chive hasn't saved the comments - there's some B&N (now former) staffers in there with their thoughts. Double bill from writers site MGC: https://madgeniusclub.com/2018/02/14/bn-strives-for-what/ https://archive.fo/yR4X6 https://madgeniusclub.com/2018/02/17/bns-latest-debacle-an-update/ https://archive.fo/Kll5J Opportunities abound if established companies are going to shoot themselves in the foot.

Hugo finalists for this year have been announced, featuring a bunch of people you've probably never heard of - https://archive.fo/Alxqt As usual, the awards take place at Worldcon later in the year - award ceremony on August 19th. This years Worldcon is hosted in San Jose, California, so pozzed levels increased.

Author and original Sad Puppy, Larry Correia, was recectly invited as one of the Guests of Honor [GoH] at Origins Game Fair - a tg/game-con - only to then be disinvited after some snowflake had a hissy fit: http://monsterhunternation.com/2018/05/15/statement-concerning-my-being-disinvited-as-the-guest-of-honor-for-origins-game-fair/ https://archive.fo/pwQI9 Turns out snowflake's boyfriend had once written an article for Tor [publishing] about muh-gaming-race-problem at GenCon - a different gaming con - that Correia then fisked on his blog: http://monsterhunternation.com/2014/08/19/no-tor-com-gencon-isnt-racist-a-fisking/ https://archive.fo/xFbkL That was 4 years ago. Also thrown into the mix, accusation's of Correia being a 'rape-apologist' - tenuously drawn from another post - despite him spending years as a weapons instructor teaching women self-defence: http://monsterhunternation.com/2014/06/10/the-naive-idiocy-of-teaching-rapists-not-to-rape/ https://archive.fo/qWeVw That was also 4 years ago - but these were still referenced to pressure Origins to disinvite Correia. Origins caved and cancelled the invite - resulting in a backlash from fans - sjws with usual snark claiming a victory. Further update: http://monsterhunternation.com/2018/05/21/origins-debacle-update-they-still-havent-reimbursed-me-for-my-plane-tickets/ https://archive.fo/UGHA1 'Unprofessional' by the company/personnel running Origins doesn't really cover it.

In another recent incident - earlier this year Hispanic author Jon Del Arroz was banned from Worldcon (home of the Hugos): https://madgeniusclub.com/2018/01/05/stir-the-pot/ https://archive.fo/Kgl9s https://pjmedia.com/trending/sjws-bar-conservative-hispanic-writer-worldcon-claiming-racist-bully/ https://archive.fo/3b94O * pjmedia chive is not the full article - site has a 'load more' feature and even expanding the whole article + then archiving still only gives the first part (freezepage not working for me). Read the whole thing on pjmedia - there's more - on the same day he was banned from Worldcon, Del Arroz was also locked out of his fagbook for posting a pic of himself holding a 'hate symbol' - a Kekistani flag. pic is email exchange between Del Arroz + China Mike from file770.

Hugo Awards winners 2018 have been announced: https://archive.fo/G9Py7 Usual backslapping by the usual socjus crowd. Vox article hails the win as 'a giant rejection of right-wing gatekeeping' in SciFi/Fantasy' : https://archive.fo/XfvZ6 Right-wingers gatekeeping SciFi/Fantasy - well that's fantasy I guess. Also gamedrops - GG: >the unfortunate 2014 movement that essentially underpinned the rise of the alt-right >codified harassment campaigns against women and people of color for years >helped give rise to the ideological polarization of the internet. Also rewriting history by crediting GG with Larry Corriea's creation of 'a set of disruptive collectives known as the Sad Puppies' - originally formed in 2013. Sad + Rabid Puppies not active at the Hugos this year - hence fewer media hitpieces. Sjws have nothing to complain about? Then they'll just make shit up, and blame the puppies, and GG, anyway.
