>I wanted to give you all a bit of an update. I don't usually do this, I prefer to have things wrapped up and finished before I show it to you all. But I'm very excited about the new things I'm working on. I might get a bit technical because of that too.
So, as some of you might know, I make the animations for the game in Blender. It has been a great tool but for some time now I've felt stuck when I work with it, my rigs and 3D models are quite complex and with heavy scenes, the program slows down a lot, I could barely get 30 fps on optimised scenes and I wouldn't be surprised when it dropped below 20. The looks in blender were also very different than in unreal, and poses I thought looked good ended up looking bad in the game. Not to mention that exporting from blender and importing into unreal takes hours, only to realise after it finished, that because of the issues I explained above the animation did not look as expected...
Recently Unreal Engine 5.4 was announced with tons of animation updates that look very promising. So I decided to start making the switch, from animating in blender, to unreal. The preview version of the engine was released a few weeks ago, and since then I've been learning and working with it, and the results look very promising. I've been able to replicate most of the rig for Zoe (and because of the new modular rig features in this version, it can easily be ported to any other character). It runs so much smoother than in blender, not only that, I'm able to see exactly how the animations look in game, all in real time.
Making this switch to unreal will also let me create more dynamic animations, where the player can change things on the fly, because the same tools used to animate work at runtime. Up to now all animations are baked, that means they can't be changed while playing, I can only blend them with other animations or change their speed.
One more thing this upgrade will allow is animation mods. I'll start laying the foundation for modding simple poses and loops.
I still have not forgotten about the bath scene I promised you long ago, I've gotten quite sidetracked since then, with the building mode and now this animation update, but I felt like these additions would give more content to the game in the long run.
There's still a lot of work to be done, but in these weeks I've only been impressed by how well the new tools work and how smoothly this transition is going.
