During the first few seasons, Homer and Marge were born in the mid to late 50's, Grandpa Simpson was a WWII vet, and Mr. Burns was born in the late 1800's (1896 if you take the throwaway joke of him being related to George Burns seriously.) But now, the way the show treats it, Homer and Marge were born around the same time Bart and Lisa would have been born when the show started.

I can understand that events were X years ago, and specific references to past eras will be based when the episode came out. That would all be fine if the episodes were actually funny or had any redeeming value at all. And the ones that are bad aren't bad for that reason. They're bad because they have bad writers and artists.
