Two reasons are the most common. First is because they see themselves as being the "gatekeepers" to both the companies who seek to expand to foreign markets and the customers who want to have access to foreign products; so they use their influence on both ends to force companies to cow-tow to their demands if they want to have a foreign market to sell to (Which is a common business problem, that isn't exclusively enacted upon by localizers), meanwhile having said foreign market praising the localizers for "granting the simpletons" access to a product that only they can provide.
The other reason is that they're depressed or angry that their only line of work is translating the creations other people have made, so, in order to enact revenge upon the world for slighting them...somehow, they rewrite the work by replacing the product with what
they think people should be interested in buying (Instead of the product people had interest in) and/or "fixing the errors" of the author and showing how great of a critic they are in hopes of having someone notice them and give them attention for the purposes of making their own work.

Do you mean the people who obsess over the material on wikis but never (In relation to this board) have bought (Much less played) the games that the wikis are about;
OR people who have participated in buying the games and having knowledge of the material, but lack all interest in it for no other reason to lord it over others? In the case of the former, it's the outside looking in, that people are interested in wanting to get involved, but refuse to invest the time and money and do the actual work required to become a part of the community; however, they don't want that to negate their voice on the matter because they (At least) did the homework. In the case of the latter, it's back to the concept of gatekeeping, however for the purposes of lording over others.

That's just people who think they're more important than they really are. You saw this with the Vic and the anime conventions, and Ethan Ralph when it comes to ecelebs. In the case of Vic, anime dub actors threatened conventions with their absence if Vic was present, despite the fact that they don't actually contribute towards an increase in ticket sales, meanwhile Vic does. And, in the case of Ralph, he thinks content creators (And the world) "owe" him something (Money, recognition, etc.) because he did something for them once that may or may not have contributed to their rise the public's consciousness.
It's not just one thing.
