I like the first two thirds with younger Anne who was far more chatty, imaginative, over-dramatic, adventurous and prone to making humorous mistakes. Sure, it's a coming of age story, but mature Anne just does not hold a candle to young Anne when it comes to being entertaining to watch. Nice overall I just really prefer young Anne Shirley. Matthew Cuthbert was a good character often displaying less-is-more in terms of dialogue and a fitting counterpart to the chatty young Anne. Unfortunate that they didn't have more interactions since he would indulge Anne's musings far more than Marilla Cuthbert. Watching the simple farmer's occasional quiet responses to Anne chattering away with her big ideas was very charming. Anne of Green Gables had practically no major misery until near the end. Princess Sara was rife with misery while Pollyanna had some, but not even close to Princess Sara. I think so far I liked Pollyanna best. I have the 48 episodes of Little Women as well as the 40 episodes of its sequel so there's still tons of proto-Ghibli content to watch. Obligatory mentions: Anne's design is maybe competing for a spot among top ten fiveheads.
