It is not about the content of the words in this case, since the examples used were in movies about obscene activities and even the alternative version contains descriptions of these activities. For news reports they might use an anonymous source, whose face is blurred and whose name is bleeped out, which is a thing that would necessitate bleeping, but at the same time it is also something that wouldn't have alternative dialogue dubbed over anyway. And you are forgetting one thing, by bleeping something out you are already making it an it-that-shall-not-be-named entity. The words fuck, shit and piss are all words describing biological processes, everyone does these things and has done them since time immemorial. Yet somehow we are led to believe these biological processes are so obscene you aren't even allowed to speak those words from a dictionary. It's all censored either way, but in this case you are allowing someone else to reinforce in your mind that these words are so incredibly obscene that it is something worse than death to utter them. So you are being steered one way or another in both cases. In one you are conditioned to be scared shitless of words you might know but also might not, since after all you will have at best heard only one letter and there are plenty of obscene words out there that start with the same letter (thus leading you to conclude a different obscene word that you HAVE heard that would "kind of" fit but that is not necessarily the same information). In the other you can still have the meaning of the word communicated, but not the word itself. And although you do not receive the information that there was something censored there, there also isn't this conditioning at play where people are deathly afraid of words. They might live their entire lives without knowing that on TV people can't say "nigger", they haven't notice that they have heard "negro" and "darkie" but never nigger. As such they will use these words in public and in regular conversation without any fear in the slightest.

Nobody thought that way. Censoring with the bleep in public broadcasts was just a song and dance concession that people tolerated. Nobody imbued those words with any "mystical" or "horrific" significance because they were forbidden. It was a matter of what at the time was seen as professionalism and public decency. It was a mark of distinguishing your character. The same way you wouldn't expect to see the News anchor coming on air in a beer stained shirt, crooked tie, and five-oclock shadow... you also wouldn't expect them to come on the air and start dropping f-bombs, because it would mark you uncooth and base (not based). Vulgar. It was about appearance, and manners. Not about thought control. It was also enforced by laws, because ultimately that is the only way TO prevent people from using such language that others would prudishly find objectionable. Today's censorship very much is about thought control. It's about modifying not just public behavior, but of modifying attitudes and worldviews by presenting the viewers with a false reality that they want to be and stamping out anyone who breaks that illusion by speaking up too loudly. The censorship today and of yesterday do have paralleled, especially when it comes to depictions of sexuality - but with words, it was never the content of the words that was censored. You could have some vile opinions according to the moral zeitgeist of the day and still express them freely to anyone who would listen so long as you weren't gyrating your hips suggestively in front of a crowd of wet teenage girls or say specific words from a list of socially recognized naughty words. In a round-about way, it could be seen as a benefit in the long run - as it required the speaker/artist to lean more heavily on metaphor and turns of phrase to get their meaning across. Today, it's not just a handful of words that are banned, with the list being jumbled by PC prudes - but attitudes, entire thoughts, political opinions, or worldviews that are now being censored - both in real time and being scrubbed from the history of media. At the very least, if you just bleeped out the "offending" speech - the listener would still know that there was something their masters didn't want them to know... and they could look it up of their own volition. Censored radio songs and Parental Advisory labels only improved sales of records, games, movies, and comedy shows. Shock comedy grew to the popular force that it was precisely because of it. Today's kids? They'll never even be aware that the information they're getting has been carefully edited for state/twitter/chinese approval.
