Safety cameras. Driver 07/07/2019 (Sun) 23:49:43 Id: b705ae No. 18459 [Reply]
No, they're not just to squeeze as much money from motorists as possible, it's all about safety. That's why the 'safety' cameras are all on main roads with lots of traffic, including buses and trucks. And usually on a downhill section. Meanwhile, on suburban streets where children play, 'safety' is less important - it's up to Shane in his corsa to decide what is or isn't a 'safe' speed…
I don't know where you live, but our cameras are everywhere except dangerous spots and always in places you could go twice the speed limit without question.
>>18463 This. Flashboxes do nothing for safety anyway, because it takes one week for everyone to know where they are so people slow down a little at the camera and then go full speed ahead afterwards.
>>18465 I hate this when it happens: Going a regaular speed, everyone slams the brakes, a handfull slams the accelerator just because of the boxy taxy flashy.

So I just finished initial d first stage and people kept on saying the 86 trains the driver. What do they mean and are there any other cars like that?

Yes, the GT86
>>12917 Well, you know how a lot of people say you can't weight reduce a car enough to hurt the engine? Stops being true if you disable all nonessential accessories and remove everything you don't immediately need for driving. Cast iron pistons on a 96mm stroke eventually give out if you push them as hard as a 300+hp engine. Sucks, but I guess I learned my lesson. And got a lot more life out of it than my dumb ass deserved still.

On Crossovers Driver 05/28/2019 (Tue) 05:56:03 Id: 57a7bf No. 18306 [Reply] [Last]
I'm a bit of a newfag when it comes to cars, but I came onto this board expecting most people to hate crossovers with a burning passion, and I wasn't disappointed. I can certainly understand why. Most of them, especially the modern ones, are ugly as sin, less fuel efficient than sedans, and don't handle as well. They have a little more cargo space than a sedan but not nearly as much as a proper SUV, they have AWD/4WD as an option but generally not enough clearance to make use of it in true off-road situations. Unibody rather than body-on-frame means most don't have the durability to be true offroad vehicles, either. And on top of that, it's the quintessential normalfag body style, which means anons have a duty to hate it out of sheer contrarianism. All that being said, do you think it's possible to make a non-shit crossover, or is the whole class a failure out of the gate? If it is possible, can it be done in the current market, or would it require someone to physically remove all the EPA/NHTSA regulations shitting up the market first? Personally, I think there's potential, but only if you change the design philosophy. Right now, crossovers are tall sedans LARPing as SUVs, making them a confused mess that doesn't do anything well. Instead, you should approach the design of a crossover as a station wagon for big guys. Focus on the added cargo space for people that need to haul more shit around but aren't construction workers, instead of pretending it's an offroad car. A higher cabin, not to clear debris and terrain, but for tall fuckers that can't sit comfortably in sedans. Maybe offer AWD or 4WD as an option, but not for anything offroad, just for people in rural and snowy areas that could benefit from the extra traction in the winter. I think picrelated, the 3rd generation RAV4, is a decent example of a crossover done "right." It has good gas mileage for what it is, 22 city/28 highway compared to the same year Camry's 22/32. 73 cubic feet of cargo space standard, which is about as much as other crossovers have with the rear seats folded down. It's 66 inches tall, not obnoxious but enough to give taller people a bit more headroom. And yes, I know you can just bring the seat downward on sedans and the like, but there are comfort concerns on longer drives. If my knees are ever higher than my hips while sitting, I get lower back pains while driving. As a taller guy, a lot of sedans in which I've driven require me to either scrape my head on the ceiling, or lower the seat so much that it becomes uncomfortable. The 3rd-gen RAV4 seems like a big guy station wagon in all but name, but marketed as a crossover because that's a popular segment in the burger market. This making sense at all, or is it retarded rambling?

First daily car... a mistake? Driver 06/22/2019 (Sat) 19:28:21 Id: 776adc No. 18414 [Reply]
I'm an 18 y/o who has saved up some money and is soon looking for a daily car. I have no real stuff to lug around (no cargo, and at most 1 passenger), and I've a big fascination for 80's Japanese cars. Would a 1988 Toyota MR2 AW11 N/A be an unwise choice? It's well within my budget, and I'm looking to test drive one soon. pic related

If you don't plan to move any time soon and don't live in a cold climate, I'd say go ahead.
If it doesn't snow where you live, I don't see why not. Mainly because rwd is hell in the snow and you're very likely to kill yourself being a new driver (especially with all the weight in the rear), but also because 80's to 90's Japanese vehicles rot to pieces if they so much as smell road salt.

New season, new thread. First episode goes up on the 18th but what I found more interesting was that they've made a video game that will release a few days before. It sounds awful, and for $15 they don't seem to be very confident in it themselves. I'm considering buying it just out of morbid curiosity.

Sturdy but subtle Driver 06/03/2019 (Mon) 13:43:41 Id: eaf7c3 No. 18336 [Reply]
I work in Detroit. I currently drive a 20 year old Buick to work. I love this car, but Detroit roads have potholes big enough to hide a body in and it's clearly taking a toll. I know that one day I'm going to hit a pothole in the middle of the night and get stranded in the ghetto. So I'm really just looking for a vehicle that is sturdy enough to handle the post-apocalyptic roads of Detroit, while also not being nice enough to get carjacked at a red light. My budget is 10-12 grand.

Nice Buick. Stop washing your car you live in Detroit. If you look like you take care of your car your car looks more valuable. I have supplied you with a full breakdown on everything you require. Unless you're retarded you will remain comfortably under budget, and can use the saved money to repair your vehicle as needed. You shouldn't be focusing on a car regardless, you have more pressing issues dealing with your living situation. F

But, the only real problem I've come across is that /o/ is dying… back when I was on halfchan, it was thriving. I've never really wanted to say this, but I miss the /o/ on halfchan, talking about cars and stuff with hundreds of people that aren't Redditfags. Hi, I just changed my tire because it had a fucking nail in it. Ever since I took the wheel off to replace it. I couldn't help but acknowledge the frame and nuts. No homo. But this woke me the fuck up. The amount of rust on my pads and rotor is shocking, and thats not all thats rusted to decaying shit. i want to diy this car now and replace the shit out of the breaks, shocks…well this is all i've acknowledged so far. What things would you check first if you bought a used car, and wanted to boost performance with a budget of 7G? pic related. (don't really care about body .Engine and underneath components are more important.) any good reply is much obliged.

Brakes
One of the first things I'd check for is the color of the smoke that came out the exhaust; if it's even slightly blue/lingering, it means the engine is burning oil as well as fuel. And if that's the case, I'm walking. Subframe, check for cracks and shitty repairs. Underneath both rocker panels for rust, especially if you're in a cold area and/or live near the sea.

What to get? Driver 05/07/2019 (Tue) 07:05:31 Id: 278344 No. 18147 [Reply]
Hello /o/. I'm a 20 year old southerner boy who's looking for his first car to buy. I had a 200k+ Taurus hand-me-down, but too much has gone wrong with it for it to be any useful to repair anymore. All of my motor supports are bad, my catalytic converter is dead, 3 tires are flat and I need to replace the battery, plus it's been hit by deer I think four times. I recently came into a lump sum of exactly $5,000 (weird how it's exactly the amount for the guide.) I had some noob questions and I hope I won't get bullied for this, but… I was thinking that I should buy an old 6th gen Civic because it could be neat for use with my family, it could fit all four of us, plus I could go full autist on it someday and smack some shitty turbocharger on it, and change the transmission and give myself an interesting education about how it's done in the meantime. But then I was reminded that if times are rough for me, perhaps I should look to the future instead of the present. Sure, driving a Civic would be fun, but perhaps I need a minivan or a van. I was thinking of using a car every day for when I go to work, but I have plans to go to a school perhaps. I have a few job offers in front of me, and I could lend the car to my mother for her to use in the suburbs if I am in the city and only using my feet to get to class. And, of course, the final solution is to 14/88 and have many, many children. I was wondering if it would be financially viable to buy a van and keep fixing it until I have children and use it for transporting them. Basically, my question is, would it be useful to buy a van first if possible, or is the price range of $5000 for most vans not useful enough for keeping it the entire time that I am raising a family of my own? Perhaps due to how vans over 100k or so have issues? (I don't know if they do or not, I am from a place of ignorance.) And if I do buy a van, which would be the most useful for containing children or my aging family? I was really thinking that the E Series or some such would be what I would look for due to the passenger numbers and size. I am not exactly sure what kind of model I should look for if I want it as big as possible, possible vehicle ugliness notwithstanding. I will write this information down so I remember, of course.

>>18290 The whole paper is pointless. It can be summed up as: "Car manufacturers should put more women driving cars in their videos." I guess they aren't listening to them and thought writing it concisely in a paper which appears scientific would make them listen.
>>18290 >>18291 >>18288 Of course this paper is pointless and that's exactly the point! Why none of us is writing this shit up? Becasue we have better stuff to do, do we? And someone is pumping loads of money to force women into male domains of expertise/self-actualisation. It makes both: them unhappy and the economy more messed up. Nuclear plants and racecars are poweder by expertise and passion. Children by love and care. Mix it up and bridges fall like in Florida, planes fall like in Boeing and companies fall like reddit.
>>17910 New cars suck when you look at the traditional segments, but things like Citygo are super fun go-karts with aircon and great mileage. On the other hand modern hypercars are literally hitting the limits of what's physically possible with rubber tires.

Quick question for the engineers here: I'm planning on building a pipe car that uses suspension similar to a humvee, just all independent suspension. Why? Cos fuck me that's why. So first off… I'm not American. So I can't get a humvee or H1 to look at. But my understanding is this: drive shaft feeds into a drive gear, then into a wheel gear, which feeds into the wheel where there is nothing but the wheel and steering column in it, and the suspension rod close to the wheel gear. So my question is this: what size rim would I need to get an x factor of 16 inches to accomodate for this?
I'm sorry, what?
>>18256 Driveshaft feeds the differential which is a combination of a locker and a gear. These connect to the axles which have CV joints to vary their angle which are supported by springs and struts. Why are you building a car if you don't even know basic terms? Eurofag's governments banned fun a long tim ago
>>18259 I second this enquiry.
