Game of the Month #17 (February 2025): Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand (Konami / Kojima ARPG) (GBA) Anonymous 02/03/2025 (Mon) 18:53:38 Id: 0556f4 No. 1067631
Napalm sticks to riggers >What is this? This is exactly how it sounds: A game is chosen each month (which will be relatively or totally obscure on purpose) with hopes of bringing new avenues of playing potential to anons with narrow video game perspectives. The goal isn't necessarily to pick bad games, but obscure ones nobody, or as few people as possible, have played. You can play the game and then use that fact as bragging rights to others! You can use it to broaden your backlog horizons! or you can forget about it. It's up to you. THIS MONTH: Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand (Konami / Kojima ARPG) (GBA). The unique aspect of this title is the inclusion of a chip in the cartrdige that reads the amount of sunlight (or any other strong light source, really) that is directly tied into the game mechanics. >Where do I get this? "aHR0cHM6Ly9hcmNoaXZlLm9yZy9kb3dubG9hZC91bnJlbmFtZWQtY29uc29sZXMtZ2JhL0Jva3RhaSUyMC0lMjBUaGUlMjBTdW4lMjBJcyUyMGluJTIwWW91ciUyMEhhbmQlMjAlMjhFdXJvcGUlMjklMjAlMjhFbiUyQ0ZyJTJDRGUlMkNFcyUyQ0l0JTI5JTVCU2Vuc29yJTIwaGFjayUyMEwlMkJSJTIwdjIuMS4wJTVELnppcA==" Alternatively, if you want slightly more immersion than just using cheat codes, use an unpatched rom and follow this tutorial: "aHR0cHM6Ly9hcmNoaXZlLm9yZy9kb3dubG9hZC9nYW1lYm95YWR2YW5jZV8yMDI0MDEvR0JBLnppcC9HQkElMkZCJTJGQm9rdGFpJTIwLSUyMFRoZSUyMFN1biUyMElzJTIwaW4lMjBZb3VyJTIwSGFuZCUyMCUyOEUlMjklMjAlMjhNNSUyOS5nYmE=" https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=w2mBvc6Pe08 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2mBvc6Pe08&t=77

https://bitbucket.org/c0nch0b4r/boktaisim/downloads/ >A sun sensor? How in the gatdamn do I even emulate this crap? Apparently some pious soul has patched in a cheat code to simulate the act of holding the GBA under a light source. Bit of a shame, really, screaming SUNLIGHT and holding it up in the air sounds much funnier than just letting a button charge a meter for you, but there's that. GUIDELINES FOR FUTURE GotMs: Poll for MONTH YEAR: [removed] SEE FOLLOW UP POST FOR INFO If you do not like any of the games in the poll, you can either add a new entry manually, or reply to the OP with a different suggestion. Don't come crying to me if you don't like the game, blame democracy. If you DO suggest a game though, please, report all relevant information on the game (magnet/dl link, interesting mods, guides, tutorials on tech, speedrun etc.). Feel free to suggest any and every game you can think of, bonus points if it's games that barely anyone has played or talks about in the [Current Year] or that fit the month thematically. However, try and follow these rules: 1) No game that relies on modern hardware. If the game cannot be pirated or emulated properly, or no working emulator for the game exists, most people won't be able to enjoy it, rendering the thread kind of pointless; 2) No always-online games, meaning no live service games or mobile games that are dependent on external servers, unless a backup instance of said servers has been created by its fans or the offline content is significantly larger than the online content; 3) For multiplayer games, provide only free to play games that let players create their own servers, or games with local multiplayer that can be set up to play online (requires someone to be a hostfag, or, and may Allah forgive me for uttering these words, using Parsec); 4) No game that requires gimmicky controls to be enjoyable (guitar pedals, Wiimotes, cameras etc.) unless they can be easily remapped or translated into some other control scheme. >>1067650 There are some shaders that emulate how the GB screen looked. The pixels were big so it kind of had it's own aesthetic. I'm not into the shader autism though so I dunno what the good ones are. I think that CRT shader looks pretty nice though, with noting it makes it kind of hard to differentiate depth and stuff.
>>1067650 Good for scanlines blending pixels and balancing GBA's "too bright on backlight" colors, bad for spherizing. >>1067708 Good on big screens, bad on small screens.
>>1067650 >>1067708 >>1067711 The GBA does have "scanlines", just not in the traditional sense of a CRT. If you want an "accurate" GBA filter, here's a custom one I made for mGBA: https://d.uguu.se/XzGslbJC.7z
>>1067641 >If you have any suggestions for titles to include in the next poll Gonna be shilling the first vidya I've ever played Space Invaders 1999 / Space Invaders X Most people kind of gloss over the game because they think it's just space invaders with 3D graphics and some fancy scoring system and maybe a couple new powerups when in reality it's a fast paced puzzle game wearing the skin of a shmup, the GBA version is technically a "new" game but it's so close to the other versions that it might as well be included with the PS1 / PC / N64 versions (tough it's way harder than the other versions) >>1067650 GBA has that thing where it's completely over saturated to compensate for the horribleness of the LCD screen so it's usually a bit more pleasant to look at once you fix that. The issue with "GBA" filters that emulate the pixels and gap of the OG screen is that they also emulate the blur as well which is unpleasant to look at for some, there's a distinct lack of filter that emulate what it feels like to play GBA on DS which I feel is probably how a lot of people remember it looking. Scanline shaders are also adequate, and before someone complain the Gameboy Player exists so yes it's technically accurate.
Doesn't the Boktai series cross over with Battle Network?
>>1067633 I agree, some short description or sales pitch for the game would be much better in the "What is this?" section.
Boktai and Lunar Knights were SO DANG GOOD I still have a old poster from a Game Informer magazine that looked like this
>>1068056 How involved was kojima with these games? Did he just put his name on it, or was he actually the creative influence behind them?
>>1068058 He walked around the office and made programmers sing one by one, whoever sang his favorite song got to be director for that day.
>>1068084 I heard that's exactly the same process he used for metal gear acid one and two...

>>1067650 I think the GBA's pixel art came so late into digital graphics that it actually looks better clean. You could make out the individual pixels on its LCD display. A lot of GBA games are visually closer to modern pixel art than anything from the NES era, I don't think slathering them with shaders to mimic a TV from 1982 makes them look good.
>>1067633 >>1067894 The OP says its an ARPG. Granted, that's not very helpful as an ARPG can be anything from Diablo to Xenoblade. He spends more time explaining the light gimmick than the game, not very helpful if you don't know what it is to begin with.

(2.74 MB 1620x1080 CRT Royale.png)

>>1068239 Hard disagree, that pic isn't clean. Left here is actually raw pixels and to me it looks like shit. I only have CRT royale to test right now, which is not the most appropriate for GBA, but it already smoothens a lot of the rough blocky look of the raw pixels. It's especially noticeable on soft, curved lines and gradients.
>>1068270 >CRT Royale.png That's pretty. And I never thought I could ever feel the urge to replay CoM.
some months ago i played this one again after many years. I had a blast, and the first game is the weaker of the gba series. A reminder how games were actually good 20 years ago.
>>1068270 >Royale Ehhh....as the other Anon already said, GBA games were never made with CRT fuzziness in mind and have a very low baseline resolution. You could try a few of Retroarch's meme >filters that add a border, though in my experience the best way to play 6th gen handheld games is on an actual handheld. The >filters that add subpixel rendering are retarded because even with a border that reduces the visible screen it still leaves the subpixels visible, which was never the case IRL unless you taped a magnifying glass to your GBA or some shit. Game Boy Player emulation when?
>>1067711 >Filters are good for scanlines blending pixels and balancing GBA's "too bright on backlight" colors, bad for spherizing. Bezels are good on big screens, bad on small screens. First model Advance screens without backlights were eyestrain dogshit unbearable in slight dark without unwieldy accessories that obstructed your view or forced awkward angles and I'm mad good games got bad palettes over bad hardware. SP helped too late as artists still designed colors around first models. The shitty Advance resolution killed ports too. The Micro in 2005 had worse resolution than the Entertainment System 20 years before. The Classic NES or NES Classics ports looked worse than originals. Ports of Super games, like the Mario Advance series, looked worse too. Glad emulation filters extend resolution to subpixels, which Advance needs more than consoles as smaller resolutions mean bigger pixels which are blockshit on bigger panels that bring out the bad resolution of the y axis, worse for Advance than for Magnavox Odyssey 2 from 1978.

>>1068972 Fuck, forgot pic.
>>1068972 Dude, let it go, there are people younger than the GBA that are profesionals or have children
>>1067633 >>1067894 >>1068246 >Some short description or sales pitch for the game would be much better in the "What is this?" section. >The OP says its an ARPG. Granted, that's not very helpful as an ARPG can be anything from Diablo to Xenoblade. It's a dungeon crawler that's like the stealth and action of Metal Gear mixed with the adventure and exploration of Zelda. Django's like a hybrid of Solid Snake and Link and the monsters are like guards from Metal Gear.
>>1067884 I researched and Boktai and the Megaman Battle Network series have had multiple crossovers with each other. Battle Network 4 features Django at various points, including during a mini-quest to defeat ShadeMan.EXE. In Boktai 2, ShadeMan.EXE becomes a post-game boss. There are also "crossover battles" that can be played by using a wireless adapter to connect to Battle Network 5. In Battle Network 6, there are various references to Boktai 3, and in Lunar Knights, the 4th Boktai game, the Japanese version links with Megaman Star Force, allowing players to fight Taurus Fire. Defeating him unlocks Omega-Xis as a terrenial to assist the player. >>1067665 It is, MGS4: Guns of the Patriots allows players to unlock the solar gun from Boktai and MGS: Peace Walker has a cameo appearance of Otenko, the main character yelling "SUNLIGHT" during their appearance (charging the gun in the former). There is a mysterious seller in Boktai 2 and 3 that is hinted to be an amnesiac Solid Snake. >>1068201 In the PSP's card-based spinoff AC!D series, there are cards based on Hideo Kojima's other games, including Boktai.
>>1067650 gba games could be played on a crt with the gameboy player but not boktai.
>>1069016 >but not boktai. Nah you can, there's a whole playthrough of a guy doing it that way by having his whole setup outside.
(128.69 KB 923x203 YOU.png)

>>1068964 >the best way to play games made for old hardware is on the original old hardware Mind-blowing stuff, anon.
(100.58 KB 1280x720 EZ Flash Omega.jpg)

(362.66 KB 882x586 Everdrive X5.jpg)

>>1069016 >>1069020 >gba games could be played on a crt with the gameboy player but not boktai. >Nah you can, there's a whole playthrough of a guy doing it that way by having his whole setup outside. OP said "some pious soul has patched in a cheat code to simulate the act of holding the GBA under a light source" so without sunlight this game could be played on a CRT with the Game Boy Player with the Everdrive X5 or the EZ Flash Omega.
>>1069039 >Game Boy Player I had a Super Game Boy, then a Game Boy Player, to play Game Boy on TV. Most Game Boy games I experienced on those, but settled for the handheld on the go. I sold it all when I moved out and now emulate everything, even Super Game Boy itself.
>>1069034 >handheld=original hardware
>>1068972 GBA hardware was rank ass, yeah, but GBA games were good. I'll suffer rank-ass hardware to play games that good. What's the best game for GBA?

>>1069202 >What's the best game for GBA?
(491.62 KB 240x160 kissu.gif)

(531.25 KB 1226x1190 kissevent.jpg)

>>1069202 Pics related. The games its a sequel to are also pretty good.
>>1069202 Fire Emblem
>>1069202 Some people shit on tactics advance but I think its pretty decent. Maybe a bit too long though.
>>1069202 The football shaped GBA holds a very special place in my heart because my dad found one oneday in a parking lot. We couldn't afford any GBA games for it so I lovingly turned it off and on watching that sweet colored title animation. When we could finally afford one, we got Pokemon Sapphire on sale. It blew my mind how much color was in the game. The GBA holds a special place in my heart for that reason, it started a new era of wide variety color handheld games.
>>1069202 Asterix & Obelix XXL. It's just technologically amazing. The Driver games on GBA are also freaking crazy. >>1069555 Game Boy Color had pretty great color. It just didn't have that many great games.
>>1069618 Game Boy Color games I like are Azure Dreams, Bionic Commando: Elite Forces, Blaster Master: Enemy Below, Bomberman Max, Bomberman Quest, Donkey Kong GB, Dragon Warrior III, Dragon Warrior Monsters, Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Cobi's Journey, Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure, Game & Watch Gallery 2, Game & Watch Gallery 3, Ganbare Goemon, Harvest Moon 2 GBC, Lufia: The Legend Returns, Magi Nation, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mega Man Xtreme, Mega Man Xtreme 2, Metal Gear Solid, Pocket Bomberman, Pokemon Card GB2, Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, Pokemon Silver, Puyo Puyo Gaiden: Puyo Wars, R-Type DX, Shantae, Star Ocean: Blue Sphere, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, Survival Kids, Survival Kids 2, Tetris DX, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, Toki Tori, Wario Land 3, and Wario Land II.
>>1069618 >It just didn't have that many great games. Because the GBC had a short lifespawn. It launched October 1998, and the GBA came March 2001, or 3 years, and in other regions it only got 2.5 (November 1998 to June 2001). It was always meant to be an interim system, being just an upclocked GB with better screen.
