Before the internet it was boomers watching TV. After the Internet (the app age) it's zoomer-boomers scrolling tiktok. Everyone was afraid the Internet would become like cable TV, but they ignored the fact that the majority of people are "cable TV people". It's what they want, and it's what corporations will inevitably give them. Technological progress isn't real. Progress isn't real. It was never going to last, just like an ocean wave can't go on forever. Everything has returned to the mean, the average. Moralfags running wild, slop content feeds and culture wars blasting 24/7. It's like the early Internet never even existed. The proof it existed is nothing but a few files on our old forgotten hard drives. WE are the freaks out of time. Our Internet was special because it created space where we could hide from the masses for a decade or two, before it all went back to the way it was.

At least initially, the finger on the scale of what information could and could not be distributed was extremely light compared to today - but the biggest sites like Google, X, Facebook, etc have become the new institutions and have increasingly been the instruments in the crafting of approved narratives as a way to try to get a handle on their own fuckups. But as it used to be - as social media should be - it's a simple matter of Garbage In - Garbage Out.
