Shoot em' Ups Anonymous 12/12/2024 (Thu) 20:17:37 Id: d659ee No. 1049270
Does anyone here play shoot em ups? Let's have a shmup thread! space dad shmups and anime bullet hells alike are welcome. just go for the clear my nigga! >How can i play retro shmups on pc? With shmupmame. it's a fork of mame optimized to reduce input lag as much as possible alongside some other benefits like gadgets and replays. Here's a link to a preconfigured install with the some of the more popular shmups (mostly cave) https://archive.org/details/mature-dot-dodging-games-gaiden-v-1.0.7z of course you dont have to use shmupmame, you could use mame, fbneo, retroarch, or even support the official ports on steam/switch. What matters is actually playing the games! >What about touhou? Here's a collection of all the games with the english patch preinstalled. https://nyaa.si/view/1743411 What games in the genre are you favorite? What games are you trying to 1cc currently? I'm a total shitter trying to get my skills up, but I'm closing in on a Deathsmiles clear.
Not sure why pic related didnt get attached to the OP.

I love Cotton and can't wait for her new games to come out! I wonder when Success will finally show footage of RnR 2, Cotton's traditional outfit was adorable, I wonder if other characters will get similar clothes. I hope they include replays and a quick restart option, true analog stick movement would also be nice, I've noticed more shmups have included it like Radirgy 2 and Illvelo 2. If they go with the optional level select again I hope they include a bonus mode where you have to beat every level in the game in a single setting, it could be like an all-star mode. Deathsmiles is very fun but I haven't put much focus into it, right now I'm trying to refine my skills in Cotton 2.

A new trailer for Cotton Reboot - High Tension has been revealed, the game is coming out in Japan this year on July 24. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOJ4J8q_VZI The official website has also been updated to include information about the game (in Japanese) alongside pre-order options https://www.beep-shop.com/sap/cottonhightension/ I'm very excited for this game even if it is extremely similar to the original Reboot, the stage they're showing off in the trailer is a pretty boring rehash of Port Town, but the mech enemies are cool. I significantly doubt they're going to port this to PC, especially with how the steam port of Reboot was received, and if they do it's going to be long after the console versions. Thank fuck for Switch emulation. >>1066216 >Did you link the right video? I'm getting some edgy Friday Night Funkin' animation My bad, I deleted the post. Not sure how that happened. >When I watched the trailer I actually thought they were showing gameplay from Reboot until the mech enemies appeared. Yeah, I'm assuming that's the first stage. I really wished it looked less like Port City, they should have gone for a more industrial town, it would complement the mech enemies. Hopefully the other stages don't copy FND to a T. >At least Silk's ass is on the cover. A Cotton staple, I wonder if she'll be an unlockable character like in the previous game.
>>1066218 I really liked Reboot, especially how you get both the old version and the new one and how they are significantly different, so there is a point in having both. I just wish they had also included the arcade original because it's also quite different from the two we got. Cotton Fantasy just did not work the same way for me. Aside from using 3D graphics, I think the biggest problem is the lack of a "theme". Cotton is a witch and the enemies are mostly mythical monsters: harpies, imps, dragons, bats, dryads, grim reapers. In Fantasy the enemies are random 3D assets that you would get in a clip art collection, hardly any of them felt mythical. > I significantly doubt they're going to port this to PC, especially with how the steam port of Reboot was received What was wrong with the PC port?

Currently improving my shitclear 1-ALL of DDP. 1-2's as far as I can get before I start throwing out bombs to not die with them in stock. I'll spend the next week or so doing savestate practice on the second loop for some weighted vest training, so to speak. Also, I've been tinkering with AV1 over the past few days. I couldn't get RetroArch to rotate the video upright while playing back my replay, but that was fixable while splitting up the video afterward with ffmpeg.
>>1049270 Started playing pic related after finding out it was on sale on steam. It's pretty unique in unlike most bullet hell styled games there's no collision damage and the game encourages you to do so in order help you restore your health and deal more damage up close. The game's "Very hard" difficulty's pretty easy but the extinction and final extinction difficulty spikes up how hard shit gets overall all. There's potentially dozens of "ships" you can play as or play as the "Angel of Evil" that lets you customize your primary shoot type, Strong attack, and Bomb. Visually it's pretty unique with a Guro, H.R. Gigar esque style of visuals. On a minor note, your "ships" evolve each time you level them up. They typically become bigger and more monstrous the stronger you get. Accord to the game's background info they're piloted by the women in the first image by infusing their nervous system and ganglia into the "Angels" you're controlling and feeding during combat. I'm not that into shmups and I don't know much about them, but Progear is one of my favorite games. Nothing else comes close, not even other Cave games. I don't know enough about the genre to understand why I like it so much. On paper, it doesn't seem all that different from other shmups. And I hear it's usually regarded as one of Cave's more middling efforts. But I love it. Why? Is it just the aesthetic?

(100.27 KB 855x720 1384268653406.jpg)

Shmups are the genre I've tried the hardest to get into only to give up. I tried a shitload of shmups, several Touhou games, Batsugun, Dodonpachi, Mushihimesama, Ketsui, Deathsmiles, you name it and I quickly got fed up with every single one. Shmup players are always saying how great these games are, and sure, I can see the production values especially in the arcade titles, but shmups just don't have enough stuff you can do, like enough moves. Your only interaction for most of the game is moving in a 2d plane and even shooting is kind of superfluous since there is rarely any reason to not be shooting. Games like Dodonpachi are treated as revolutionary for having a mindblowing two fire modes instead of one. I don't know, it's just too much investment required for too little meat in what you can do with your little ship. For comparison I like games like Nioh where you have a shitload of moves and a lot of room for creativity and style in how you play the game.
>>1091719 >Your only interaction for most of the game is moving in a 2d plane and even shooting is kind of superfluous since there is rarely any reason to not be shooting. Try Alltynex Second, a lot of Psikyo's games, and 3D shmups like Sin & Punishment and Star Fox.

I am putting a lot of attention to Espgaluda scoring. PB is 27 million with Tateha. I am thinking of getting at least to 35 or 40 million points. >>1091719 You should focus on one game at a time. >>1199067 Yea, I've read the Prometheus guide; it's pretty old but it's still a good reference for fundamentals. I gave it another skim-through just to make sure I didn't miss anything. >Stick to one game >Practice with emulator save states, espectially difficult 5-10 second sections >No shame in copymonkeying routes >Danmaku navigation techniques (bullet herding, move where it's safest, etc.) >Set reasonable goals >Take care of yourself; avoid playing when sick/depressed/exhausted/etc. >No distractions while playing; stay locked in The hardest part really is staying committed to The One Game for months, if not years, without getting bored nor distracted. Shortly after hitting a wall in DoDonPachi, out of frustration I pivoted to Ketsui intending to take a break from DDP, only to pivot again roughly six weeks later to ESP Ra.De. I'm tapping out after a few weeks while others spent a solid decade just on Inbachi and SDOJ. Shmup Slam 7 schedule. https://horaro.org/slam7/sunday I am looking forward with some of these games, especially Neo Contra because EC is going to commentate.
(10.37 MB 13 Providence.mp3)

I managed to get myself a steam key of eXceed 3rd - Jade Penetrate Black Package recently, Love the OST. I'm a casual when it comes to Shmups thought, I have Crimzon Clover, Mushihimesama, DeathSmiles, and others on steam, played other stuff through the Capcom Arcade stadium 1 and 2
Played two solo-dev indie shmups tonight: >Lilac 0 I get a ZeroRanger vibe off of the visual style but it's much more straightforward. Major gimmick is that you have a sword but instead of just swinging it you can either do a widening radius lock-on attack or a dash that eats bullets and instakills specific enemies and overkills bosses if timed right. Definitely a good flow to it but it's been filtering my casual ass; I had to kick it down to Novice to get through the game but you need to play the middle difficulty to even see the last stage. I think you can unlock one of the bosses as a playable character if you Overkill him so I'm going to try to go for that before upping the difficulty again. Music is noticeably kind of medicore sadly, also wait for a sale maybe since it's like $12 but I think $10 is probably better. >Angel At Dusk This game is fucking ridiculous. I heard it described as sensory overload and that was an understatement; the first thing that comes to mind to compare its vibe to is Paranoiascape on PS1 but with way better gameplay than that. The art is insane, the story is insane, the mechanics are insane, the tutorial is insane, the bullet patterns are insane, the music is insane, the naming conventions are insane, the particle effects are insane, the level of content is insane, the upgrade system you can only use in the mode you unlock after two distinct Arcade runs is insane, and there's also tits. I was going to say it's a bit on the easy side but it's actually just got enough content to ease you into the real meat of the game, and it makes playing risky near the top of the screen really rewarding overall as well.

You know what the number 1 killer for me in shmups is? The wall. The fucking wall out of all things. I want to grab a power-up or kill that one enemy that keeps shooting at me and I barely touch the wall and I'm instantly dead. What are some good shmups where I'm allowed to touch the wall? The only ones I know of are the Cotton games and Tyrian 2000, but Tyrian does not have one-hit kills in general.
>>1375846 R-type Delta Einhander (allows you to scrape the wall for some time before you die) ZeroRanger
>>1375846 Most vertical shmups don't have walls to begin with if that works.
>>1341041 >>1078125 Finally managed to beat the game and reached the "Angel of Destiny" on Chronicle mode. with less then half the life I started with a few stages ago. Managed to spam bombs, charged attacks, and finally killed the damn thing with only 4 lives left. I've now unlocked chronicle mode for arcade and all of the story logs along with it. I have to say she's the most brutal boss in a bullet hell game I've encountered so far and it's a miracle I've managed to beat that thing even on final extinction difficulty. Any other bullet hell game's you'd suggest for my to try after this? ||Especially for linux.||
>>1375846 Guwange You play on foot and you can touch the walls and even use them as cover.
Is it happening again?
>>1412057 What's happening?
How do you get into that mindset of playing the same game over and over again when you don't feel like you can commit to its skill ceiling? The only STG I've ever really considered I finished was a 1 CC of Crimson Clover EX, and I don't know how to get into that mindset with anything else I got.

>>1412657 Which creator did Sinoc burnt his bridge this time?
>>1412635 If you love the game enough, you'll want to replay it immediately instead of just eventually, and if you don't then it's not something you're into enough to 1CC.
Anyone played this yet? cause i haven't holy shit that price

I just recently played hazelnut hex and its such a cute shoot em up. All the characters are such cute designs and the game is generally pretty easy but fun. Working on my 1cc but I'd love for the game and the characters to get more popular.

>>1580483 True, that's why you always pirate them
>>1578766 Gentlemen, please! You have to pick an aesthetic palette and stick with it! Either do vaporwave or do seapunk, don't mix them! At least not on the same screen.

>>1581540 That's only one stage. There's 5 in total so its very quick but they're all pretty run of the mill like forests, horror, snow, etc.
