Shoot em' Ups Anonymous 12/12/2024 (Thu) 20:17:37 Id: d659ee No. 1049270 >>1050996 >>1078125
Does anyone here play shoot em ups? Let's have a shmup thread! space dad shmups and anime bullet hells alike are welcome. just go for the clear my nigga! >How can i play retro shmups on pc? With shmupmame. it's a fork of mame optimized to reduce input lag as much as possible alongside some other benefits like gadgets and replays. Here's a link to a preconfigured install with the some of the more popular shmups (mostly cave) https://archive.org/details/mature-dot-dodging-games-gaiden-v-1.0.7z of course you dont have to use shmupmame, you could use mame, fbneo, retroarch, or even support the official ports on steam/switch. What matters is actually playing the games! >What about touhou? Here's a collection of all the games with the english patch preinstalled. https://nyaa.si/view/1743411 What games in the genre are you favorite? What games are you trying to 1cc currently? I'm a total shitter trying to get my skills up, but I'm closing in on a Deathsmiles clear.
Not sure why pic related didnt get attached to the OP.

I love Cotton and can't wait for her new games to come out! I wonder when Success will finally show footage of RnR 2, Cotton's traditional outfit was adorable, I wonder if other characters will get similar clothes. I hope they include replays and a quick restart option, true analog stick movement would also be nice, I've noticed more shmups have included it like Radirgy 2 and Illvelo 2. If they go with the optional level select again I hope they include a bonus mode where you have to beat every level in the game in a single setting, it could be like an all-star mode. Deathsmiles is very fun but I haven't put much focus into it, right now I'm trying to refine my skills in Cotton 2.

Does anybody else hate how much of the shoot 'em up genre went into bullethell autism?
>>1049293 Not really, non bullet hell shoot em ups are pretty boring.
>>1049293 Yep, I don't see the appeal in them.
>>1049300 >>1050483 R-Type is pretty fun.
(44.56 KB 370x320 confusedhuman.png)

>>1049293 Isn't that the same thing? Bullet hell and shooters? Isn't that the point? Or do you just want a scrolling background where from time to time you move your character?
>>1050542 A Bullet Hell is a specific genre of shoot em up where most of the screen fills with projectiles.
Why haven't you played it /v/?
>>1050694 Why should I?
>>1050694 >Why haven't you played it /v/? I don't see any waifu's

>>1049270 (OP) Since tons of arcade shmups are vertical, a rotating monitor stand is crucial for playing them.
>>1050996 i got a cheap crt monitor a while back thats small enough to tate easily

Who is the psychopath responsible for DOJ's chaining system, and I assume DDP's by extension? And how many young gamers have lost their lives thanks to their blood vessels exploding over lost chains?
it's pronounced tah tay btw
>>1066186 Did you link the right video? I'm getting some edgy Friday Night Funkin' animation. When I watched the trailer I actually thought they were showing gameplay from Reboot until the mech enemies appeared. Kind of disappointing. I wanted to see some new level designs now that they're doing their own thing. At least Silk's ass is on the cover.

A new trailer for Cotton Reboot - High Tension has been revealed, the game is coming out in Japan this year on July 24. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOJ4J8q_VZI

The official website has also been updated to include information about the game (in Japanese) alongside pre-order options https://www.beep-shop.com/sap/cottonhightension/ I'm very excited for this game even if it is extremely similar to the original Reboot, the stage they're showing off in the trailer is a pretty boring rehash of Port Town, but the mech enemies are cool. I significantly doubt they're going to port this to PC, especially with how the steam port of Reboot was received, and if they do it's going to be long after the console versions. Thank fuck for Switch emulation. >>1066216 >Did you link the right video? I'm getting some edgy Friday Night Funkin' animation My bad, I deleted the post. Not sure how that happened. >When I watched the trailer I actually thought they were showing gameplay from Reboot until the mech enemies appeared. Yeah, I'm assuming that's the first stage. I really wished it looked less like Port City, they should have gone for a more industrial town, it would complement the mech enemies. Hopefully the other stages don't copy FND to a T. >At least Silk's ass is on the cover. A Cotton staple, I wonder if she'll be an unlockable character like in the previous game.
>>1066218 I really liked Reboot, especially how you get both the old version and the new one and how they are significantly different, so there is a point in having both. I just wish they had also included the arcade original because it's also quite different from the two we got. Cotton Fantasy just did not work the same way for me. Aside from using 3D graphics, I think the biggest problem is the lack of a "theme". Cotton is a witch and the enemies are mostly mythical monsters: harpies, imps, dragons, bats, dryads, grim reapers. In Fantasy the enemies are random 3D assets that you would get in a clip art collection, hardly any of them felt mythical. > I significantly doubt they're going to port this to PC, especially with how the steam port of Reboot was received What was wrong with the PC port?
>>1050542 Your picture's called confusedhuman.png, but he's clearly a frog. Is his name Glenn?

>>1066561 What the fuck are you talking about? they look just like us!
(22.03 KB 110x107 dumbass png.png)

>>1066617 This. They have two arms, two legs and one head, they are almost exactly like humans.
Currently improving my shitclear 1-ALL of DDP. 1-2's as far as I can get before I start throwing out bombs to not die with them in stock. I'll spend the next week or so doing savestate practice on the second loop for some weighted vest training, so to speak. Also, I've been tinkering with AV1 over the past few days. I couldn't get RetroArch to rotate the video upright while playing back my replay, but that was fixable while splitting up the video afterward with ffmpeg.
>>1049270 (OP) Started playing pic related after finding out it was on sale on steam. It's pretty unique in unlike most bullet hell styled games there's no collision damage and the game encourages you to do so in order help you restore your health and deal more damage up close. The game's "Very hard" difficulty's pretty easy but the extinction and final extinction difficulty spikes up how hard shit gets overall all. There's potentially dozens of "ships" you can play as or play as the "Angel of Evil" that lets you customize your primary shoot type, Strong attack, and Bomb. Visually it's pretty unique with a Guro, H.R. Gigar esque style of visuals. On a minor note, your "ships" evolve each time you level them up. They typically become bigger and more monstrous the stronger you get. Accord to the game's background info they're piloted by the women in the first image by infusing their nervous system and ganglia into the "Angels" you're controlling and feeding during combat. (340.74 KB 800x1129 Progear.jpg)

I'm not that into shmups and I don't know much about them, but Progear is one of my favorite games. Nothing else comes close, not even other Cave games. I don't know enough about the genre to understand why I like it so much. On paper, it doesn't seem all that different from other shmups. And I hear it's usually regarded as one of Cave's more middling efforts. But I love it. Why? Is it just the aesthetic?
