Favorite Games of Game Developers Anonymous 03/21/2025 (Fri) 04:14:57 Id: e62389 No. 1081467 >>1081468 >>1081828
Romero's top 5 are or were in the late 90s: >Chrono Trigger >Duke Nuke'em 3D >Age of Empires >Ultima IV >Super Mario Bros. 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgTMfF1iB40&ab_channel=tuin

Hideki Kamiya's favorites: >A Link to the Past >Gradius >Castlevania 1 >Space Harrier >Cybernator >Punch Out >Wonder Boy in Monster Land >Snatcher >Sorcerian >Star Crusier https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hideki_Kamiya#Early_life When American McGee did his AMA on 8chan years ago, I think he said his favorite games were Minecraft and Fallout 1. I also remember reading somewhere that Gabe Newell's favorite game is Super Mario 64 and Tim Cain's is Star Control II, but I don't remember where. What are some other developer favorites that you know of, /v/?

>>1081467 (OP) What's this thread supposed to be about? favorite games of top tier devs?
>>1081468 Meant to put "Favorite Games of Game Developers" in the subject, but forgot after I had to refresh the page.
>>1081468 >top-tier devs Maybe if you're just talking in the 90s for Romero.
>>1081470 Has he done anything at all since the 90s? I know he was talking about some kickstarter game like a decade ago but did anything ever come from that?
>>1081566 >Has he done anything at all since the 90s? Daikatana was released in 2000. During the early 2000s, he formed a company known as MonkeyStone which created feature phone and PDA games, then he seemed to do freelance work until founding Romero Games in 2015. He released Sigil which is basically an unofficial fifth episode of Doom. He's currently working on an FPS using Unreal Engine 5. https://web.archive.org/web/20240227103037/https://www.polygon.com/23269955/doom-creator-john-romero-new-fps-game >I know he was talking about some kickstarter game like a decade ago but did anything ever come from that? He confirmed that it was cancelled in his 2023 autobiography.
>>1081566 >>1081590 Area 51 (2005) and Empire of Sin (2020) Rest is shovelware
>>1081468 >top tier devs more like washed out devs (except american, american is still a cool guy). has gaben even worked as a developer?

As as brief aside, would any anons like to give their top fives? These tend to shift and change for everybody, right now mine are, in descending order >Ratchet & Clank 2 >Doom >Terraria >New Vegas >Daggerfall It's not an interesting list, I know. >>1081470 >>1081590 >>1081593 I do feel bad for Romero no I don't care about pollydicks, he's a great producer and level designer, but the guy can't direct for shit. His career didn't deserve to get tanked because of Daikatana, but what people don't realize is it wasn't the game being bad that killed his career for years - it was the game selling 40,000 copies. That's the part of the story most don't know, Daikatana was possibly the biggest flop in gaming history up until that point. >>1081681 Gaben was and still is a dev, he works on Proton. An anon posted an email years ago from him about his work on Half-Life, Gabe said he did a lot of engine code.
>>1081682 >As as brief aside, would any anons like to give their top fives? Sure though my tastes are nothing special >Ace Combat 4 >FFCC Echoes of Time >Flatout Ultimate Carnage >Test Drive Unlimited >F-Zero X plus Expansion Kit
>>1081467 (OP) It seems pretty clear that Eiji Aonuma's favorite game is Skyrim, considering he's spent the last decade trying to copy it.
(79.88 KB 474x614 Nomad.jpg)

>>1081682 >STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl >Doom >Super Metroid >Company of Heroes >Resident Evil 3
(233.74 KB 574x798 Deus Ex.jpg)

>>1081682 That and the fact that he was running the company, Ion Storm. Investors betting on the company never saw that money back, Daikatana wasn't what killed Romeros career, it was not making money back with his own company.
>>1081682 >As as brief aside, would any anons like to give their top fives? My top 5 is fickle as fuck and i'm always changing it, but here it is. >Metroid Prime >Doom I >Final Fantasy Tactics >Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity >Front Mission: Gun Hazard
>>1081682 It's hard to narrow mine down to a top 5. But I can do a top 10 in no specific order. >Chrono Trigger >Ocarina of Time No, it's not because of nostalgia. I replayed it not to long ago and it was still great. A Link to the Past is more technically perfect but Ocarina has higher highs. I'm sick of everyone on the internet trying to convince me it's a bad game because of some youtuber. >Deus Ex >Metal Gear Solid >Super Mario 64 >Ace Combat 5 >Half Life >Baldur's Gate II >Steambot Chronicles >Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time
>>1081682 >would any anons like to give their top fives Isn't that a thread that happens like all the time. Why would you derrail a thread of something more interesting?
Yuji Horii adores Wizardry, unsurprisingly. I had this pdf years ago that I found either on /v/ or the RPG Codex that was a huge collection of cRPG reviews that would be relevant to this thread. Many of them were written by well known developers. I remember it had a review of Wasteland by Chris Avellone. I don't think I have it anymore and I can't remember what it was called. Any anons know what I'm talking about?
