smartphones were shit at the start too based on how limited their capabilities were, but back then the internet was simpler and they didn't need more processing speed and memory for browsing facebook, playing farmville, and a few proprietary applications that added utility like the map that integrated with the phone's tracking, making dashboard gps devices obsolete overnight. They took off on hype alone and utility was an afterthought.
AI isn't really offering anything that isn't already conveniently accessible like having a question about a book or celebrity or time period, and is less reliable than finding those answers on respective websites because the AI can make shit up, but do it convincingly.
There are several camps of people that give a shit about AI at all.
1) people who want to generate porn, covering all bases from text to image to speech generation
2) average people trying to make a quick buck off AI before restrictions are put into place, like selling their "prompt art" as comissions
3) technocrats who believe they can turn a profit by AI that is just good enough to do certain jobs so they can lay off most of their workforce, and also cover the cost of running their AI by selling it as a service to the general public
to the average person, AI is some crazy new thing that wont be a part of their life until it's forced into products they already use, like the integration of it into windows, but would it even make sense for a smartphone considering they already have voice assistants to google shit for you?
