>>15452 >>15454 Oh wow, that's really cool and a great idea to help sell the game. Don't have an actual GBA or Gamecube, though, so I'm not going to be able to do it. When you say trade, is there an actual trade that takes place or do you just import them into SA1/2? >>15451 Oh, alright, close enough. Thought that might have been you. >I hope you enjoy yourself anon Sure, seems like it could be fun.
>>15458 >trade or import Hmm. I think transfer would be the best way to put it. You can move the chao between any supported game but you won't have that one on SA2B and that same chao on Advance 1

>>15467 Ahhh. I've seen that happen before in fan-comics, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised in that case.
Why does Sonic seem to have an instashield but it doesn't work? Am I timing it wrong?
>>15469 If it's what I think it is, it's a move you can use for attack. I've rarely used it myself, tho
>>15469 Instashield is actually a pretty bad translation from what I remember, in Japanese it's more something like "Wind Attack". So maybe it just increases your attack range?

>>15471 I just went straight into the game without reading anything so I didn't even know what it was called in any language, but it looked so similar to the instashield that I didn't think it was anything else. >tfw can't bust the spiky flying fishes with not-instashield >>15472 Oh, alright. >>15474 Just wait until some low end pc mod comes out like it did for forces
>>15475 I didn't know there was one, given the engine and how it looks I wouldn't have thought one could have been necessary.
>>15476 There's always people using toasters far below the requirements >given how it looks looks can be deceiving. textures and models could still be reduced to impact performance
>>15472 >>15473 Since Advance was my first Sonic game I owned, I accepted that it was just an extra ranged attack so they could map something for his second button action. When I played S3&K afterwards, I read the manual that said it gave you invincibility from projectiles when timed just right, but was confused and thought it was an error or something since I didn't understand why they would drop such a perk in a supposedly more "Advance(d)" game. When I got older and more skilled, I then realized what it could do in its original debut which made for a really nice tool in his arsenal and the fact they dropped its invincibility frame in Advance onwards probably did him no favors to people asking "Why would I play as Sonic when Tails and Knuckles are basically the same with superior air capabilities?".The original insta-shield was really a good way to distinguish him apart from the other two aside from the acceleration, jump height, and more overt shield powers since it allowed for skilled players to continue unimpeded by enemy attacks when speeding through levels, but I think the drop dash may be more appealing to the layman for speedrunning purposes. >>15475 This is also news to me.
>>15479 > and the fact they dropped its invincibility frame in Advance onwards probably did him no favors to people asking "Why would I play as Sonic when Tails and Knuckles are basically the same with superior air capabilities? It's this right here, that revealed to me when I can tell someone is talking about the "faults of 2D Sonic" come from, they aren't talking about the classics, they are confusing themselves with the Advance games, assume "if the Advance games did x, then those old ass grandad games must have been worse" so crap like "run into enemies" actually are Advance's faults, not actually the classic games. I think them retooling the classic physics into the GBA is the real impressive feat they pulled, but everything else being a downgrade in varying places really makes it sad those games might not never get a proper remake they way they deserve to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIlIqcVtGJA >>15480 >>15479 I have always believed that to truly bring Sonic into a modern setting, the player needs to feel like Sonic. I discussed this in the fangame thread before it fucking died but one thing I didn't mention is that if the player wants to feel like Tails, or Knuckles, then the proposed solution of "plays exactly like Sonic just with a few different attributes" is not gonna cut it. When I play vid related, I don't feel like I'm playing as Tails. I feel like I'm playing as Sonic, just with the added ability to fly. And I'm sorry, but taking away the insta-shield and giving him flight is not enough to make Tails stand out as anything other than a Sonic clone. It's not like Luigi, where "Mario except he can jump higher" is literally the complete extent of his shallow character. I think back to Sly 2, with Sly, Bentley and Murray. Murray could shimmy across ledges and do stealth kills and all sorts of crazy stuff with his gadgets, but he couldn't run on wires, he couldn't perch on spires, he couldn't pickpocket, his defense and combat capabilities sucked, basically any of the things that made Sly…well, Sly, just weren't there. You weren't playing as a thieving stealth mastermind, you were playing as a technological genius and that reflected itself in the gameplay. And because of that, none of his missions were suitable for Sly or vice-versa. Tails can catch up to Sonic better than anybody else can, but that doesn't mean he can blast off at the speed of sound. Why does he need to be as speedy as this video's ideal would have? Why can't he have his own levels that actually use his flight as more than just an easy mode being able to fly over everything, or take the occasional optional route? Why can't his brains actually play a role in the gameplay itself? Give him some gadgets or hell, even weapons, Ratchet & Clank style. I think too many Sonic fans glorify the idea of bringing Mania's multilayered, super-complex level design with multiple routes for every character into 3D with every character playing basically the same. There's no reason to do that when we have advanced past the 16-bit era to allow every character to have their own campaign, story, levels and unique gimmicks to truly make you feel like you embody all the unique strengths of each individual cast member, instead of thinking of them as "different ways to play Sonic". /rant
>>15481 >Murray could shimmy across ledges and do stealth kills and all sorts of crazy stuff with his gadgets Meant Bentley, damn it.
(31.80 KB 480x360 JEHBtq4xvS4.jpg)

https://youtu.be/JEHBtq4xvS4 >>15481 Nice rant. Imo, on one hand, I've grown rather numb to the 20 years of 3D Sonic, so I'll bite with this direction. I think making characters play different is great for making said character actually feel like something special. But as a brand, it's became very clear to me over the years that 3D games fail the most when the experience of what a character in a game can do, could either work for the character AND be fun to play, or it doesn't and make the game worse. On one hand, games like Sly, for lack of a better word, are kinda dead nowadays. Unless I'm missing something, what game in the past 5 years had multiple playable gameplay styles (that isn't a spinoff title like Smash Bros), either between characters, or just by themselves? I legit don't see this anymore like I did in the 2000s. I think most people realized when you ask for a mainline game to do x because they want more of x, having the game "share" x with y when people don't like y, is why games like Sonic where Tails don't play like Sonic but with flight, seem to fail. Case in point, why people prefer Sonic 2/Mania Tails over SA2/Heroes Tails. I don't just think its simply "it's kinda janky/buggy/etc so I don't like it", I think just not being what people expect from a series is enough for people to hate it. Even when it's just one character, GoW e.g got flack for having those "balance on wooden planks" so much they removed them from future games. Because people want more of the action packed fighting, not slow platforming sections in a game about killing demons and gods. Basically, I call it "consistency overrules" syndrome. People genuinely rather have games that actively expects you to play a certain way, to be just as expected so they don't have to handle multiple ways to play. I think the Sly comparison has the one problem of contention, since the only major different between the 3 characters from what I remember was mostly their core abilities, while in general; they still can move around at decent speeds, can platform, and mostly, feel about the same to control, just that all 3 have a special ability the others can't do… which sounds familiar to Sonic and his pals, doesn't it? To me, the problem I feel is this, 2D Sonic is meant to be simply and to the point, while 3D Sonic *has* to be more complex. Or to most, "complicated/convoluted" because it "feels more realistic" or something. Personally, to have multiple characters work, having a "rooted" base for gameplay so controlling them doesn't feel like I'm playing an entirely different game (Big's Fishing, Mechs in SA2, etc), but giving them abilities that actually define their character traits is what I think is needed. Case in point, video related. It gives character special, specific traits that isn't just "replace x with y, leave everything else the same" that the 2D games have to do to work. My only complaint would be if using these unique characters feels forced and unwelcome, instead of seamless and entertaining. Ultimately though, I agree with what you're saying, but at the same time, there's a reason games today barely like to make entirely different playing characters, because it seems most people prefer it this way instead. *shrugs*
>>15483 I'm not advocating for each character being an almost entirely different game. I would never want Tails to control like a mech again, or deal with fishing. But I don't think many fans, if any, complained about Tails and Knuckles's gameplay in SA1. They had similar controls to Sonic, but were very different experiences overall. >On one hand, games like Sly, for lack of a better word, are kinda dead nowadays. Unless I'm missing something, what game in the past 5 years had multiple playable gameplay styles (that isn't a spinoff title like Smash Bros), either between characters, or just by themselves? That's not really a fair argument. 3D platformers in general have been dead for a while. Modern game development tends to put you in the reigns of ONE character with one control scheme and one moveset. Even Mario tossed out the tradition of Luigi being playable with Odyssey. Same with Mega Man and Protoman. With how expensive game development is nowadays, there's little to justify having multiple playable characters in the same game, rather than focusing all of your efforts on one character having as diverse a moveset as all of those characters combined. I believe that's why SEGA has stuck to having Sonic be the sole player character until Forces, and not because people bitched and complained about "Sonic's shitty friends". I recommend you replay it then. Murray for example is a lot heavier so you technically can still platform with him, but it's not as fun or as fluid as with Sly, who's floatier. Sly can't handle the heavier enemies and can die to them in only a few moments so you're supposed to sneak around them or hide when you get spotted, while Murray is perfectly capable of taking on multiple big guys at once. And since he's a lot larger, it's pretty difficult to be stealthy with him since you can't hide under tables and such. Bentley can't even handle the smaller enemies, so getting around in his missions requires actual tactical thought. They all have a similar control scheme and similar ways of moving about the map, but there is absolutely no way you could plop Murray into one of Sly's missions and expect him to get very far. It's not just about not having a special ability, it's about being completely gimped in areas where Sly would excel. And that's my main point: if you can plop Tails into a Sonic level, and he does perfectly fine if not better than Sonic would, then something is wrong. I'm not against similar control schemes as much as I am Sonic not being special. And having an insta-shield with slightly higher top speed is not enough to make him special. >It gives character special, specific traits that isn't just "replace x with y, leave everything else the same" that the 2D games have to do to work. Maybe I missed something, but Tails in that video seems to move just as fast as Sonic, he still spindashes, he still does a homing attack, and he still has a "boost"-esque dash. The only differences are that he can fly, do a Rapid Tails Attack, and throw bombs. And while that does open up more unique opportunities for Tails-specific levels, it's still Sonic with a few more abilities piled on top. There's no equivalent exchange in place here, not enough taken away from Sonic's core moveset to justify Tails as a unique mode of play.

>>15483 >what game in the past 5 years had multiple playable gameplay styles (that isn't a spinoff title like Smash Bros), either between characters, or just by themselves?
>>15479 >it allowed for skilled players to continue unimpeded by enemy attacks when speeding through levels The instashield is genius, it does a really good job at raising the skill ceiling without ruining or radically altering the rest of the experience and it's really addicting to use when you inderstand how to, and it's also not that hard to master. Really well thought, would have never come up with it myself. I can't believe they only used it in one game (or two, technically) and then ditched it.
>>15485 Imo, I'd easliy say the DKC games easily has the same Sonic syndrome too, albiet, I haven't been able to play TF to know this for sure. But in the originals + Returns, it's basically standard controls between all characters plus one and more unique abilities to make them stand out, like in Diddy's Kong Quest personally. How did Cranky Kong play in TF?
>>15486 Same can be said about the elemental shields too. It's like they knew S3K was never going to be topped proper so they nerf the series intentional and used gimmicks and stories to distract this fact to you.

>>15511 >>(actual discussion but peppered with unnecessary personal insults) >actual discussion I'd believe it when I see it. It's like a thread with like ~5 IPs isn't going to really have drown out discussions, mostly because you either have "deep cuts" like >>15481, >>15483 and >>15484 which ends up either one sided or just two people creating long stretches of text that fill up the screen, or you only get something when something new comes up. I'm actually surprise halfchan's general is still alive, after all the shitposting that place generated that has nearly any and all outside places that knows about it trash it like the cancer it's considered, but hey, you could say the same thing about halfchan as a whole, espeically /v/ and the other 'hot topic" boards. The slowness of this board really works for a 26 year old millianial like myself, where all of the high energy cancer that is halfchan really justs highlights why should I bother with that place anymore. I'm just too old to obsess about shitposting with ~18 year olds. I'd rather spent time sharing Sonic content that I like, and while it's going slow, play said content in the meantime. I mean, god forbid that same mentality is shared on halfchan's /sthg/, since there's more time to shitpost then there are playing SA2 or something.

>>15512 Forgot to mention: I've always disliked the spring gimmick for SAdv1, but to be fair, Adv2's special keys thing was the absolute fucking worse. To this day, I've yet to get all the Chaos Emeralds in the game after I lost the original save file. I just wanna play as Amy again, dammit

>>15516 Wow, really? Why cut out SS in a 2D Sonic game? Are the other Advance games like that, with no unlockable Super Sonic? I get why 3D Sonic games did that because of how likely he could break the game (albeit that didn't stop Sonic Heroes jacking up the speed variables) but the Advance games, at least the first one, really felt on point to the classic momentum physics.
>>15517 >Are the other Advance games like that, with no unlockable Super Sonic? Without cheat codes? Yeah
>>15513 My problem is that >"I like Sonic. Do you like Sonic? I like Sonic." is the extent of any kind of actual discussion in here. I mean, even that one discussion didn't seem to anywhere past…yeah, 3 posts. I understand being too old for shitposting, but that apparently also comes with "being too old to take this franchise seriously enough to talk about it in a way that isn't ultimately shallow and devoid of meaningful substance".
>>15518 That sucks… Seems bizarre to me they'd remove something like that. But I guess the same could be said about the lack of a working instashield and the elemental shields.
>>15519 So post what you want to talk about, anon. The flawed level design of stage x? The musical superiority of megadrive chiptune? Where did everything go wrong for Sonic as a franchise?

>>15525 Same thing. This is one of the many things I feel bad about for the Advance series, the GBA was good way to have Sonic more accessible, but it came with limits, the music is majority one of them. It took them to Advance 3 to finally use the GBA sound chip to the fullest…. which still isn't close to the quality the Genesis games produce. I'm not bashing the music of the Advance games, because I personally love Sunset Hill. But it's STILL handicapped by the sound font that is the GBA's speakers, and it's unfonturate. The only rememberable osts to me is the first zone, and the second to last one. Boss wise, only the final zone literally is the only time I liked hearing Eggman's theme. It sounds very generic for a Sonic game otherwise, like, it sounds "le bad guy" esque for babies or something, not the jazzy stuff Eggman normally has.

With how good Sonic music generally is and how big of a platform for chiptunes the gameboy came to be lately, I was expecting a lot better.
>>15527 >>15530 Ice Mountain, Angel Island, Egg Rocket, Cosmic Angel, "Knuckles", and the special stage theme are the only themes from Advance that stick out to me. I love those themes, but the rest of the music is mostly just eh.
>>15519 We do have actual discussions, but you have to realize: 1. This board has a low pop. With any topic, you're not going to have as many people interested in discussing it, and most discussion is going to be slow. 2. Sonic has been discussed to fucking death. It's hard to discuss things when you're probably just going to be repeating what you've already said. 3. We don't get a lot of people that are new to the franchise. The majority of us are pretty experienced when it comes to the series, so it's hard for anyone to teach, learn, or find something new. There's only so many times you can have the "what I think Sonic should be" discussion, before it gets stale. One can only argue why they think SA2 is amazing/shit for so long before they get tired of it. I'm just thankful we don't get the kind of autists /sthg/ seemed to attract.

>>15549 >Sonic Advance 2 boss You have my condolences, anon.
>>15551 >Ultimate Flash Sonic Holy shit, the memories.
>>15551 >they gave you a lot of rings as you kept running I noticed this too with the rest of the Advance 2 bosses, they give you lots of rings on the boss battles. It kind of makes things too easy for the most part but it does let you focus on the boss better which is fun. Also, most of the boss battles have so far been very similar, you just run after Eggman while getting lots of rings and the only things that change are the attacks and the way to defeat him. Wish there was a bit more variety, Advance 1 was much better on this. >>15553 >>14570

>>15554 Well I hate to break it to ya, but from what I know, that's literally all the bosses in the game. Thanks to that latest breakdown video by the Geek Crtique of Advance 2, the reason for the game's direction is in responce to people saying the previous game (Advance 1) felt "too slow" for a Sonic game. Which I can personally see where they get that from, as it was basically Sonic 1 Advance + Tails, Amy & Knuckles. But Dimps seem to have taken it too hard to heart, so they basically created the first Boost game for the Sonic series, and it shows based on how much faster the game is, to the point I really beg the question why is Super Sonic cut from the main game? I think Sonic Team forcing in all of the 3D era conventions really did a number to "streamline" the Advance games with mix results at times.

I got into Advance 2 taking it slow and safe and the game was trying to make me go fast at all costs, kek. Advance 2 feels way too automated but I feel it's more fun than Advance 1, and the levels seem complex enough for me to want to go back and give them a replay to see what else is there. Finding those weird coins or stars or whatever they are is fun.

>>15609 Storywise I think it would be something very similar to what a satam/archie game would be like: freedom fighters working together to take out eggman's empire, with the added spark of sonic turning into super at some point, him turning into the main villain. That'd be a cool switch. Gameplay wise I'm not sure. I was thinking something like what the fangame Sonic World is, cause each character is very different in what they can do. Apart from sonic, tails and knuckles, Amy has a crossbow, she'd be great for long range combat or something like that. Johnny is a one on one type of fighter, weilding a metal staff. Shortfuse is an op option, because he's arguably the most powerful one with his super badnik armor, can fly, punches hard and shoots lasers, maybe he could do for a boss too if he lost control of his suit. This got me thinking, are there any archie or satam fangames?
When did we first hear about the Sonic movie being in production?
>>15611 I believe SEGA revealed it back in 2014, when Sony was still working on the movie originally.
(821.56 KB 1632x1224 sonicboom-film.jpg)

>>15611 The first indication of a movie was at the 2014 Nuremberg International Toy Fair, where this poster stated that the franchise's first CG animated film was coming out sometime in the future. Of course, this poster was somewhat incorrect (I fucking wish we got a new Sonic game in 2015), and Sega released a statement that they never told the Toy Fair about any upcoming games or Boom's TV series. Later on, in June 2014, Sony and Sega released a press statement revealing that they had teamed up to create a yearly series of Sonic the Hedgehog films (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/sonic-hedgehog-movie-works-at-sony-710867). The first one involved Sonic and some other franchise characters including Eggman, and former writer Van Robichaux revealed that he had regular meetings with Sega of Japan (https://twitter.com/VanTheBrand/status/966760757126811649). Now, the rights for the film have transferred over to Paramount Pictures since 2017 (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/amp/heat-vision/sonic-hedgehog-movie-races-paramount-1044819), with minimal invovlement from Sega (http://www.ladbible.com/technology/gaming-in-conversation-with-team-sonic-racing-producer-takashi-iizuka-20190430) and no information on further films after the first one.
>All these new posts Nice. Welcome & enjoy your stay, anons! >>15613 Yup. IIRC, that Van dude also tried to learn as much as he could about the Sonic series, playing the games as well as posting on message boards like SSMB, interacting with the fanbase directly. Damn shame all of that was for nothing, since he got booted off the project shortly before it went to Paramount.
>>15614 His ambitions were good, but I don't know if his and Evan Susser 's writing talents would be all that good, judging from their sole project, Fist Fight. In fact, that's what pisses me off the most. In both Sony's and Paramount's plans for the film(s), the writers are all shit.

>>15616 What are you talking about? It's the only film they've ever wrote, and it's shit. Being a fan of something doesn't mean you can write better than before, and it doesn't mean you can write something good.
>>15615 It may not have been all that good, but I do think that at least they would've had at least a bit more of an idea than what we're getting now. He seemed pretty adamant in making sure the film wouldn't have been another Smurfs/Chipmunks type of movie.
>>15617 >. Being a fan of something doesn't mean you can write better than before, This. I mean come on, just because fans made Mania, doesn't mean every Sonic fan is as good, if good at all. Kishimoto and other Sonic Team staff are 'fans' of Sonic, doesn't mean they make the stuff the overall fanbases wants, although, this is a gray area within itself. The only thing that would have been the case with Sony's Sonic would have been the first leaked image of him would have retroactively been far better then Movie Sonic today, like always. Like, this happens all the time, something "isn't good enough" then someone else fucks it up even more, only for people to ask for the shit they bashed to come back. I remember people did this same thing and used Boom Sonic as the retroactive design, which before that, was Modern Sonic when Sonic Boom was revealed.
>>15613 Damn, that's a really nice recap anon, brings back a lot of memories. I remember that poster, it was fun when leaks like that happened and allowed us to speculate and dream (even if that's kind of a mistake), and it's been so boring after they stopped happening and things slowed down. >I fucking wish we got a new Sonic game in 2015 I fucking wish we got a CG animated film. >>15614 >that Van dude also tried to learn as much as he could about the Sonic series, playing the games as well as posting on message boards like SSMB I was going to mention something about this regarding >>15598 since sometimes like with Van and even Potanc/Graff (and I'm pretty sure there are other examples), people that are supposed to create stuff for the franchise are given nothing to work with and they have to make due with what's publicly available. What the hell. I will never understand how Sega is sometimes so anal about how characters are depicted (see the comics, the bibles for merchandise and packaging) but some other times they just completely throw the towel (Boom, the movie, etc.) and don't give a shit. >>15615 I never understood why nobody had issues with this fact when he was revealed as the writer. Maybe it was just because of him giving them attention and showing himself as friendly to the fanbase/franchise? Also the guy sounds like a lunatic judging from his Twitter after he got distanced from the movie, lol.
If Sonic's power is speed, Tails' power is flight/intelligence, and Knuckles power is strength, what is Amy's power? Since I'm probably going to get nothing but shitposts in response to this, I'll bite and say Amy's power is determination/tenacity. Once she's got a hold of something, she won't let it go unless she's forced to let it go. Not just literally, but metaphorically. If something needs to be done, and no one else can do it, she'll jump on it. And if she's incapable of doing it, she'll force herself to become capable of doing it.
>>15621 Amy doesn't have a special power. At most, she's just fast like a lot of other characters.
>>15621 That sounds about right. Her hammer packs some punch, but her biggest defining feature seems to be her passion & determination. Whether it's her feelings for Sonic, the faith she has in other characters or anything else, you never really see Amy not wear her heart on her sleeve. In terms of specific power, she doesn't really have one outside of the Piko Piko I guess, but that sorta makes her the proverbial "heart" of the team.

What's your top 3 ugliest Sonic zones/stages/levels? I think this tops it for me.
>>15736 Really? I actually thought it looked cool. Well, color wise I don't really like it, but design wise I love it. One of the best techno theme levels in Sonic, compared to the shite like in ShTH.
>>15737 It doesn't look that bad in the picture but when it's animated, specially when that weird burst of energy happens and fills the background with graphic noise that moves all the time, it's just too distracting and random and not particularly pretty, so it kind of annoys me. It also bothers me that it doesn't seem to have a definite style like most other zones… it's just too abstract for me.
>>15738 I can see what you mean. Which is sadly something I feel effects most of the Advance games the most, most of the limitations being on such a small screen with not a lot of depth control like the Genesis games had the power to do (even better done in Mania) that it makes me earn for a remake of the game with modern day conventions.

I don't get why they stick to side mouths all the time on angles that doesn't look right when it happens. But the main reason I posted this was thinking about the animation and how I wished the mainline games could look better than this. They look just like this, and it looks so sterile and bland. >>15771 Hesse is the only artist I've seen who actually does the green eyes like they should, imo. You can't tell from a distance that his eyes are green: his irises aren't 5 times the size of his pupil. They don't look out of place here like they do in other art where the green sticks out like a sore thumb.
>>15773 Can agree 100%. Even something like how Nintendo does with Toon Link would work as well, but what makes it work is because it's not so in your face, its an extra, not the feature. Something SEGA just don't know how to do, is subtlity. They always force the newest addition to Sonic in your face. That's likely why the whole "green eyes" thing happen nearly 20 years ago, while no one made a big deal when "classic" Sonic had brown tinted eyes at one point (which Mania brought back)

I just played a bit over an hour of it. It's good, but disappointing. The core gameplay and controls are great, but there's like five powers, not counting base Fark, and all the bosses, so far, fall to the same "spam attack and occasionally parry" strategy.

>>15783 Oh there you are Greet-anon. I missed you. I don’t think I have any plans Sonic wise. I’m still just waiting for TSR. Only rush to the Ideya Captures in the bginning of each course and when beating the bosses. Tripped me up too when I first played it.
Given the recent interview Iizuka did about the current state of Sonic & how "they feel like Sonic's turned a corner towards where they wanna go" & the increase in Adventure-era pandering, what are the odds SEGA actually does a Sonic Adventure remake in the next few years?
>>15854 >the increase in Adventure-era pandering What? Where are you seeing this? Because from where I'm standing, they're moving closer and closer to a Classic-centric franchise. I'm pretty sure Iizuka is referring to the unprecedented success of Mania, Mania Plus and Mania Adventures.
>>15855 >Where are you seeing this? It hasn't been anything major, but between the new merch being made for Chao, lots of new mixes/remixes for Adventure-Unleashed era music in TSR/Forces as well as (IIRC) Iizuka stating that he'd like to go back to re-do some of the stuff in Sonic Adventure. There's been a bit more stuff from that period than what we've gotten around say, 2013-2016. At least from what I've seen.
(684.52 KB 1280x960 1518207474250.png)

>>15855 >What? Where are you seeing this? Because from where I'm standing, Not him. Forces was the first to pander to Adventure. First all the rehashing of Chaos, evil Shadow, darker story. Also how the Avatar got Soap Shoes as a unlockable asserary Second comes Team Sonic Racing. Heroes got the most rehashing content, next to boost era. Also Crash 40 returning, and the return of relavent Chao content. And IDW basucally being the most 2000s era pandering out of all Sonic media right now, also mandated by SEGA. Right now, there's more low key Adventure pandering then any and all that Mania pandered to the fans. In fact, outside of Classic Sonic in Forces, without Mania, there wouldn't have been anything classic Sonic outside of some throwback levels in TSR (and the Sonic R "R" in the name). Tbqhf, classic Sonic was shilled by SoA, not SoJ. All that "classic fanwank" was purely by the American branch of SEGA. Literally all of the extra content for Mania was thanks to SoA and American fans alike desperately pushing for Mania to get the treatment it got (which it did deserved). As of >>15854, I'd like a source, but if this true, I'm half baffled and half empethic about this. On one hand, I don't hate them trying to not got too far dark for Sonic anymore, personal reasons, but them going as far as making him too family friendly makes me upset. He should keep his snarky energy he had since the 90s, not jokey, or full on shonen anime protag. But something in the middle I'd like, the problem is, he doen't have the right team to get this vision of his to work. On their side, it's gameplay and writing problems. But the second problem comes in the form of the fanbase wanting SA2 (yes, SA2 speifcally) tone back. But as it seems, Iizuka doesn't want to go back in fear of what it would do to the image of Sonic. The fans hate the casualizness of modern Sonic, but outsiders didn't at all, hence why Colors, Generations and Boom was appealing to them. But the modern fans want early 2000s Sonic, which outsiders mostly don't, or at least, not to the extreme the mid 2000s took it. I think SA1 in spades was the best take for the tone for Sonic. It's about as "epic" Sonic should ever get just to keep things simple. On record, the Advance games should be the standard tone, and escalations hit S3K/SA1 tones, no more. That, and of course, get someone to reimagine the gameplay SA1 Sonic started with. Reimagine a SA1 without the stipulation that it also had to be made as a tech demo for a 20 year old console, instead of being a fully realized Sonic game.
>>15854 On one hand I feel like I've seen some increase of them putting Adventure stuff in more places lately, but on the other hand I don't know if I could say there's a real increment. They have been trying to toss the Adventure fans bones every so often since forever, with all the remixes, live concerts, new CDs and other merch. So I don't think it's likely it actually means something, and I don't think they have the resources to toss into a project like that these days, but who knows. Maybe they'll do something similar to what they did with Boom and Mania and slowly paint the whole franchise with Adventure stuff and let it take over for a while. >they feel like Sonic's turned a corner towards where they wanna go I'm still not sure what the hell he means with that and I'm scared he could mean Classic exclusivity or something like that. Assuming they wanted to give an Adventure remake a shot, had they gotten their shit together come 1998 with the rights of the stuff they made so that such a remake has an ounce of hope? Does any part of it (or SA2) have any kind of legal issues like the previous games?
>>15858 Nope, no legal mumbo jumbo whatsoever. Everything was done in-house and not outsourced, including the music. The only exception might be the SOAP shoes. The product placement on billboards and stuff has been nixed from re-releases, but Sonic still has the shoes. I'm not sure if SOAP has/had a trademark on that design or not.
>>15858 Well, they would have to pay royalties to Dreams Come True for Green Hill in SA2.

>>15860 Considering they sell Sonic plushies in Japan with those shoes, and how it also was in Forces for the Avatar, makes me think there's no legal problem.
>>15864 I don't think they're actually officially selling SOAP shoes Sonic plushies. You sometimes see them in promotions but I don't think they are available for purchase. It'd be great to see what the tags say on those to see if they have recently made some or if it's just old stock. >>15894 But anon, Mario and Sonic Olympic games already do it. So I'm already in the right. :^) I only want them to use it when Sonic is facing the camera directly. It looks so off when the side mouth is seen from the front imo…
>>15896 I'm obviously not going to change your opinion, but I still thinks it looks cute. Boom is the proof it can be done
>>15896 Are you serious? Sidemouth looks way, way more awkward in 3D. It wasn't designed to be looked at from every available angle. Why do you think they always position the camera to the side of Sonic's face?
>>15899 Yeah. For 2D the side-mouth works, but I'd rather see middle mouth for 3D Sonic. Just looks more natural, imo.
>>15900 It's weird because SA1, SA2, Heroes, 06, they all have center mouth (except for CG cutscenes). It wasn't until Unleashed where they decided to make that a thing all the time, but whether it was an artistic change or simply because technology got better, I don't know.
>>15901 My guess is that it was an artistic change. Sonic was using side-mouth in pretty much all of the 2D artwork in the series & merch, so maybe they wanted some consistency? This also reminds me that Unleashed was the game that made the Tornado red again.
>>15899 Not him but I think there are times where centermouth can look good but most of the time it really sticks out for looking awful. I don't know how else to say it but it makes him look like he has the Down's or something like that, where his face isn't quite shaped right. Sidemouth doesn't have that effect with me, I don't rememer specific moments where I thought it looked bad (i'm sure they exist though), but it is true as you mention that it has limitations. It's probably best if they just used whichever worked better for a particular scene or made the scene so that it can work with sidemouth.
(197.71 KB 444x390 wat.png)

>>15903 It's mostly the worse in Forces. Too many moments the characters are seen from the front in that game while in Unleashed and Generations especially, they made sure the cutscenes reflected that limitation and made the game have the 2D sections in mind that that's how you're going to see Sonic's face most of the time. From 3/4th views in cutscens, to side view every time you start the stage, to the 2D sections. Even Lost World did an attempt to do the same. It was Forces it was the worse and made it look so jarring. The worse the center mouth got was, ironically enough, when Sonic games got too realistic looking, outside of ShTH weirdly enough. On one hand it looked weird in games like SA2, 06 and especially in Smash Bros Brawl because you could see the shadows of "human cheeks/lips" that looked bizarre for a design that looks like it's meant to be flat like an anime character. On the other hand, in games like Heroes and ShTH, they made them appear rather 2Dish because of the colorful and plastic looking models, the lighting issue was gone, but it was replaced with the size of it being too small and looked (again ironic) like anime mouth flaps. I think the best it got (even going as far as to make it look decent from all angles) was in Riders. The only issue was the dated model overall, which looks rather Dreamcast tier, but with Heroes shininess and 06's lankiness. It's weird. But overall, modern Sonic's model since Lost World kinda fixed the aged problems like shadowing and model disformations older Sonic models had, it just has the remaining issue of awkward side mouth from front angles, pic related. Basically, the only real reason I want the center mouth back is because it was moreso a limitation I think where they couldn't get it to work as both viewpoints without making 3 face models for it (which I'm sure they could have done, but decided not to) but today in 2019, there shouldn't be any issue making a model that can tween the mouth across the face properly as long as you got the right talent to do so. It came to mind just now, but you could make a preset front mouth that can ease to a side mouth from one side, then flip the face when you want it to go to the other side. This "Lerping" as it's called could easily make the transition look seamless and effectively fix all the issues imo. /r
>>15904 That doesn't look awkward at all. It fits the characters' anatomy while showing it from a front angle.
>>15906 That's pretty cool. I'd love to get one.
From what I've seen, Team Sonic Racing has been getting some solid reviews. Given the concerns people had about it when it first came out, that's pretty nice to see.

>>15904 >It's mostly the worse in Forces. Ah, figures. I haven't touched Forces. I just tried watching some cutscenes but… yeah, I'd rather not. Holy shit, it looks like it's made in gmod and the scenes themselves are just… cringeworthy. Sidemouth didn't look that bad though in what little I saw, but yeah, nothing would surprise me. The shadows in the lips were awful, even with sidemouth, lol, but we've had some instances where they used centermouth with current models. The Olympic games come to mind, and it's those I specially have in mind when I think of centermouth because it just looks awful to me in them. I don't know what it is that makes it it look that bad to me, maybe I've just become too used to sidemouth or something, but I really don't like this. In Rio's trailer there's only few instances where it looks a bit better, and it's generally when they have Sonic do an expression, but it still doesn't look completely okay to me. >there shouldn't be any issue making a model that can tween the mouth across the face properly I'm pretty sure they actually did that in Unleashed and/or Generations. At least, I remember playing with that in the Unleashed mod. I took a look at how they went about it in Night of the Werehog, since animation there was great. What they did in that case is that they had a sidemouth, but the more they needed to have a front angle of Sonic in a scene the more they centered the mouth, without ever completely centering it in his face in a way that makes the smile symmetrical, it's always slanted to one side. I think that's a good compromise, but all of these details do show that there has to be care in how you portray the hog. Another interesting and maybe related detail is how Uekawa always draws the characters from the same angles, you seldom see them from the front or the back.

>>15926 Yeah, these are all great examples. I was going to note NotW, but tbh it's CGI, so getting this into actual gameplay would make for the best approach to me. As long as they never make it look so bad as Forces did, I really don't care as much. Just like Oshima did Classic Sonic design, Uekawa knows proper Modern Sonic design. Glad he was put under speical care for the latest models in TSR, but I really wish for in game models to refect this. Even back in 2007, Unleashed Sonic was considered "excessive" for video game model poly count wise, and I can't fathom this would be a problem to make work without much stress on hardware in 2019. We've came too far for me to accept less now imo.

There was this one fan theory some YTer I saw wanted for a rewrite of Sonic Lost World, where it would have been better if the events of Zavok as a villain would have been handled better if his insistence of defeating Sonic and the other Zeti not doing what he wanted to his degree, causes Zavok to go rogue and swore off to defeat Sonic on his own. I'll try to find the video of this in a second. Either way, I guess SEGA actually made this canon now.

So what's the word on Sonic this Summer? Any news, events, or important cons happening? Any rumors regarding E3?
>>15948 I think there's a fan convention soon but I always forget its name. No official news yet, they are being tightlipped as always and they've just released TSR so we'll probably not hear anything for a while sadly. Soonest official thing is the twitter takeover this Friday so maybe we'll get some funny jokes in the character's voices. Oh, I've read there's going to be an official fan gathering by the publisher of TSR in Spain to celebrate TSR's launch. They did the same for Mania's launch and I hear it was pretty good.
So apparently, there's gonna be a Sonic/Shadow/Tails/Eggman Twitter thing Friday: https://twitter.com/sonic_hedgehog/status/1131304788874878976?s=19

>>15953 What's that? A Sonic game is a "romhack" of the last game made before it? No… It's like that's standard practice in games or something… JK, it's still neat either way. But wake me up when PC mods are ready.
(81.75 KB 517x475 1410581010462.jpg)

What's the most unfair mechanic you've experienced in a Sonic game? Things like being repeatedly thrown against badniks or spikes by springs so that you're hurt without recourse, badniks that shoot you from outside the screen with pinpoint accuracy, spikes that come from under the floor without any hint or warning, enemies that are invisible and home in on you really fast when you approach, and stuff like that. All of these are terribly peeving but I think I'd go with the first one because at least with the rest you can attempt to do something on a replay, but with the first one it's a lot more difficult.
>>15957 Literally anything in the Advance games. Also the boost mechanic in Rush is handled very poorly, mainly because it's a limited resource despite parts of levels literally requiring it to proceed.
>>15956 >It's like that's standard practice in games or something… It is standard practice, but considering how Forces was built from Lost World, and not Generations, it's safe to say that the original source code for Unleashed/Generations was rewritten for Lost World without an available copy. SEGA likes to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K57VTbTXvdY Good afternoon, /fast/ Today I learned that some Sonic fans are trying to create the canceled 3rd season of Sonic SatAM. So far, not much is known about who's working on it outside of one of the original composers for SatAM. They have a Patreon set up & this really makes me wonder how long it's gonna last before SEGA shuts it down.
>>15962 This whole deal is very stupid. The animation itself isn't that good either.
>>15963 Yeah, I'm kinda disappointed in it honestly. I'm all for a group of fans making some kind of conclusion to something like SatAM as a passion project with no real money being involved. But at the same time, this isn't just a full on non-profit thing like, say, those old Sonic Paradox shorts or that Nazo thing from 10 years ago. This is something with actual money involved due to the Patreon & it not only looks really awkward in the animation department, but that whole aspect just makes me think it won't be long before SEGA shuts it down.
(21.44 KB 480x360 qPqv0xyh4RE.jpg)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPqv0xyh4RE Posting this here, contains some spoilers I really like some of the models used for this
>>15965 Yeh. The models are the best part of it. I really hope we get more interesting cutscenes on the next mainline title.
>>15966 Yeah. I kinda get why they're opting for the text-heavy scenes given that it's cheaper to do, but some actual cutscenes like the Riders & Zero Gravity would be really cool to see. Especially since the writing in TSR seems pretty solid.
https://twitter.com/fixstern_star/status/1131482867299520512 So according to translations of TSR's Japanese dialogue, Sonic might remember the events of Sonic 06, while Silver doesn't. Interesting thing to reference
>>15969 Speaking of Japanese translations, >>15944 is just false. In the Japanese manual, it's only mentioned that Zavok once fought Sonic as the leader of the Deadly Six. It was never clearly stated that he is the "former leader" of the Deadly Six.
>>15962 I don't know if they'd care enough to shut it down. The animation is kind of awkward but ultimately I never cared too much for SatAM so I'm not so offended by that and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do, which could be fun. It's pretty cool that they care enough to go to those lengths, so wishing them luck.
>>15971 Honestly, despite my criticisms I would like this project to go well. Seeing some old Sonic media get closure like that would be pretty nice. >>15970 If I were to guess, someone just assumed Zavok was the "former" leader of the D6 because we haven't really seen much of the Zeti since Lost World.
>>15965 The models and poses are excellent, really glad they invested in that and I hope they can continue getting results like these for the next games. Knuckles sounds much more different than I thought he would given some people's comments, and it doesn't help that I got quite used to the previous VA because of Boom. Dodon Pa's laugh is nowhere near as good as Eggman's. Also, what's with his name? Does it have some kind of meaning in Japanese? >>15967 There's probably no way they'd be able to go for a $30/$40 price with fully animated cutscenes, but I just can't get behind text scenes, it's something that belongs in mobile games at most.

Started playing Advance 3. So far it's given me a good impression, though I've only barely played the first zone. I have a feeling it's going to go back to being punishing like Advance 2 was soon, however. I like the higher production values, and it's funny seeing the progression from Advance 1 to Advance 3, but I don't know why they went through the trouble of featuring Chao so much but won't let you do anything with them (they did in Advance 1!). That kinda sucks. I love that they included some voice acting for the characters, it goes a long way. Should I play Battle when I'm done or should I go straight for the Rush series next?
>>15992 I'd say go back & play Battle. It's a very fun fighting game with a pretty cool character in Emerl.
>>15992 Advance 3 kind of continues from Battle, so if anything, you should play Battle first.

>>16001 The nose also seems more like the right shape judging by the silhouette in the sign. Still, even if they got his design right, the movie is still probably going to rape every other thing it uses from the franchise. >>16007 Think we could get it cancelled?
>>16004 The blue arms never really bothered me, as I always felt that it looked fine for an older version of Sonic. >>16007 Speaking of IDW, solicitations are out for Sonic #20 & Tangle/Whisper #2! >“Crisis City, Part 2”! When a powerful ally succumbs to the Metal Virus, Omega and Sonic stand alone against an infected city. And even if they can save the remaining civilians from the zombots, will they be safe from Sonic? The conclusion of the Crisis City storyline, but not the Metal Virus saga! >If Tangle and Whisper know they’re being led into a trap, the imposter they’ve been chasing can’t get the drop on them, right? Who is this mysterious imposter, why is Whisper so adamant about taking him down, and will Tangle be able to help-or just get in the way? Find out in “Ambush”! As for the rest of your post, yeah. Things aren't the best right now, but 2019 is definitely far from a bad year for Sonic. We're getting some fun stuff & even the worst thing about Sonic this year (the movie) is getting change. I imagine it'll still be mediocre, but at leasts the worst thing about it won't be as bad

>>16004 I wouldn't vouch for that myself but the only real reason it was tan was because the Genesis sprite would have been hard to read where his arms were if they were the same color as his body. As it is, it's just a style preference, like when Sonic's eyelids used to be tan, again, like the classic games. But as for the announcement, as long as his face gets chanced to look appealing (I'm on the fence it doesn't need to be on model to canon, just better than the shit they had before) for me to care as much about the changes. But at least the delay gives me a bit of hope now.
>>16011 >because the Genesis sprite would have been hard to read where his arms were if they were the same color as his body. Citation needed, because even in the very first design by Ohshima, he had tan arms. Personally I think that in this world, there are good design decisions and shit design decisions, and that there's no such thing as "personal preference" unless it seems like such a minor issue to you that you'd rather not bother. Sonic having blue arms throws off the color balance of his design, where there's an overwhelming amount of blue and his tan belly sticks out like a sore thumb. Sonic having blue eyelids implies that his eyelids have fur, so I've never been a fan of that decision either.
>>16012 Ohshima was designing Sonic for a video game right? I thought both him and Yuji planned out the design after getting their alpha build ready so they knew the sprite compression would make it be needed his key features (eyes, mouth, arms and hands) stood out for the viewer. Though I could be mistaken.
>>16012 Although yeah, I only don't care as much because Boom was like 6 years ago now. I myself missed the tan eyes instead of the implied furry eyes, and I guess I'm not as upset abut the arms because as long as classic/modern design keeps getting the spotlight and Boom and the movie stay sidelined, I tend to not get considered about it. If they started doing this for classic/modern, I'd be upset again.

>>16013 Ohshima was designing Sonic primarily as a mascot for the company, and something that'd be instantly successful. Nothing about the game's engine or gameplay had been finalized yet. The veeeery first design made both his arms AND legs tan. They weren't making any modifications to his design for the hardware until the very last minute, where they changed him from teal to dark blue so he'd be easier to see.

The more I play TSR, the more its flaws stick out to me. I hate how weak all the wisps feel. I hate how little defensive options you have against wisps. I hate how the team boost (or whatever it's called) is really only effective if you save it until near the very end of the race. I hate how I WAS WINNING THE GRAND PRIX CHALLENGE UNTIL THE GAME DECIDED TO SEND ME FLYING AND FLIPPING AT 1000 RPM FOR NO REASON, LANDING ME UPSIDE-DOWN AND BACKWARDS
>>16020 Never got the feeling it was going to be a well rounded game. Did you encounter any other bugs?
>Tails favorite anime is My Hero Academia Well you learn something new everyday. >>16020 Oof. Well, what do you think of story mode?
>>16021 Only a minor one, and that was some of the traffic attack bots just sitting completely still on the track. >>16022 It's fun, when my AI buddies are competent, though I feel like the AI opponents may be cheating a little. I find it hilarious how Dodon-pa is completely transparent that he's trying his best to make the competition so hard as to really fuck up the cast, yet they're all "this guy has to be up to something. I'm waiting for the big reveal that his goal is completely innocuous, like he's just some eccentric billionaire in dire need of extreme entertainment, or something.

Man, having to depend on AI, and the way team ultimates work, makes the singleplayer story, on anything higher than normal, a pain. You'll constantly be giving items to them, but they'll barely offer them to you. If you're in the lead, (and 90% of the time you will be if you're at all competent) they'll barely be able to use the tailing boost mechanic. If you're behind them, their lines suck and can make it more difficult to get a boost off them. And team ultimates are the worst. Since they're dependent on the whole team using the teamwork mechanics, you'll be lucky to get more than one in a race. And they are effectively a game of chicken to see who can activate their ultimate the latest in the race. It's like having a blue shell, except there's no disadvantage to holding it for as long as you want. Except your AI team mates are liable to activate theirs early, if they get too impatient for you to activate yours. And I swear, despite using a speed type character with a kart customized to have near-max top speed, all the other racers don't seem at all slower than me, even on straight sections.
>>16044 It was kind of predictable that the single player was going to suffer because of the game being so teamwork oriented. AIs aren't very good at video games in the first place so making you depend on them like this game would require is kind of a mistake. >despite using a speed type character with a kart customized to have near-max top speed, all the other racers don't seem at all slower than me, even on straight sections. That's kind of odd. Would you say it's best to play as a technique type for their bonus then? Also, have you played online yet?
>>16045 >Would you say it's best to play as a technique type for their bonus then? Possibly. All I know is that I've seen power types pull ahead of me due to boosts, and then I'll have a hard time catching up unless they really fuck up or I get a huge boost. >Also, have you played online yet? Not yet. I tend to try to beat a game's story before tackling multiplayer.
>>16045 >>16046 I also meant to add, it's awful when one of the star or key conditions asks for your allies to also do well. Those, at least, you can do on easier difficulties. Honestly, I barely see a benefit to doing higher difficulties besides getting more tokens for unlockables. The game doesn't seem to keep track of what difficulties you've beat a mission on.
>>16046 >and then I'll have a hard time catching up unless they really fuck up I remember seeing on the Sonic streams that power types handled really badly and sometimes they'd even have trouble doing some turns. Normally they wouldn't play as them and when they did they didn't do very well in the race. Maybe the stats for each type are not maintained when the AI is piloting them. >I tend to try to beat a game's story before tackling multiplayer. That's understandable, I hope multiplayer is better.

I love when Rouge does this. She can be a pretty cute and fun character. Feels weird having to hit Tails, though.
>>16049 >Feels weird having to hit Tails, though To be fair, Tails DOES kinda deserve it
>>16050 Well, technically that's true, yeah. But he's still too cute to hit. Also, he's just so fun to play as in this game, lol. Shooting that cannon of his is so satisfying, and I love all his little inventions and the sounds he makes while using them. Dumb foxboy. Playing as Emerl on the other hand is quite frustrating with all the abilities so low, everyone just rapes me because all the stupid robot's moves are so slow, and grinding points is quite slow as well.
>>16051 Yeah, Emerl is gonna be a bit annoying the first time around. But by the end, he becomes probably one of the better characters in Battle.

>>16053 Based off the pose in one of her recent Sonic Channel posters, right? That's a really good Amy render
>>16051 >grinding points I'd say that's the game's biggest flaw. It would've been better to just have a fixed amount of points that goes up each time you get a new Chaos Emerald.
