Looks do matter, and the secret to being good-looking is to care about your appearance.
Trim your facial hair so you don't look like a hobo. Have a haircut that looks decent with your kind of face.
If you aren't confident in doing this yourself, go to a barber shop run by women and frequented by male repeat customers. Ask the stylists for their opinion. Women have an eye for what looks handsome to other women, and men won't keep giving their money to stylists who give bad advice.
If you're obese, adjust your eating habits to reduce your calorie intake. You don't have to starve yourself, sweat your ass off at the gym, or eat food that doesn't taste good. You just need to give a shit about the calorie density of what you're eating.
Drink more water and less soda. Snack on fresh fruit instead of junk food. Find things that taste good to you, but don't have a lot of calories per serving.
Aim for no more than 2000 calories per day if you aren't employed in a job that involves physical labor. That could be 1000 calories at breakfast and 500 at lunch and dinner, or 800/600/600, or less if you find that you aren't lacking for energy with fewer than 2k calories per day, but Breakfast should always be the most calorie dense meal of the day.
Bear in mind that if you do choose to go to the gym regularly, you will not magically begin losing weight. You will in fact probably gain weight before you begin losing it, because you will be building up muscles faster than you are burning off fat.
Keep a comfortable workout routine if you decide to hit the gym. Consider walking at least a mile every time you go, if they have treadmills that measure distance. Do sit-ups. Swim. Anything you can reasonably do to work out your core and your upper legs without making yourself miserable. The only time you need to be pushing your limits is if you are trying to build up stamina or if you are body-building.
