It's a shame because Jin's past was quite properly tragic, just I think his past would lead to him prioritizing a depressing "survival at all costs" rather than going retard mode and wanting to kill god or gay shit like that. The characters felt like the writers had the idea of the plot and pulled the blank slate characters along with. Compare this to what's in XBC1: Shulk's initial quest for revenge which changes to peace when he learns more, Sharla and Reyn, Fiora coming back, 4/7 party members growing up with eachother, and how both Dunban's close teammates betrayed him and tried to genocide his entire race. Soldiers that act like bickering children, mistrust from a lifetime of war being overcome in a moment, zero conflict between the two squads as they get used to working together (they just immediately become a group of 6 rather than 2 groups of 3), a special sword that can cut anything just being bought off Noah's nopon technician/friend. So many missed opportunities. I gave up on it, and from reading the wikipedia plot summary it's good that I did. Xenoblade 2's combat is intensely addictive if you're an autist like me. All the chaining and sealing and special effects and orbs and chain attack finishers all hit just right, and once you get a rhythm going your waifus are dancing around you blowing up half the planet while a voice yells "Great!" "Awesome!" every time you do something cool, and its one of the best JRPG combat systems I've ever seen. But I too wish a mecha RPG would come back.
