I looked into the logistics of making a search engine once. Specifically I wanted to use the "three lever model" that returns the best results but takes longer to get going. The issue is the spiders. This bit has been going on for years, meaning Google's index is even further ahead of competitors than it used to be. I forget who it was, but someone made the point during the Google antitrust hearings that any kind of breakup against them was utterly pointless unless the government forced them to release their index. Because if they didn't then they would always have such an overwhelming advantage that even gutting the company would see them shoot right back to being a monopoly.
