"Sega Master System" is a meme name that SEGA developed later on to differentiate it from the Genesis. It was called the "Sega System" or simply "Sega". Originally the name "Master System" was used to differentiate between three commonly sold sets: Sega Base System 2 controllers, Hang-On Sega Master System 2 controllers, Light Phaser, Hang-On & Safari Hunt Sega Sega-Scope 3D System 2 controllers, Light Phaser, Sega-Scope 3D Glasses, Missile Defense 3D, (possibly Hang-On & Safari Hunt too) >All systems had Maze Game

Import games and consoles Anonymous 05/18/2021 (Tue) 06:59:36 No. 110 [Reply]
What import games does /vr/ like? I've been looking forward to playing Sweet Home. I have a Famicom I got some years back, and I can use the English translation as I own a flashcart. I'm pretty fond of the PC-Engine and MSX as well, both very interesting consoles/computers in my opinion. What does /vr/ like?
Fire Pro Wrestling anything and most Banpresto titles of yore.
i really enjoyed sweet home as you mentioned and the english translation of mother 3
I like SMT translation for the psx

Edutainment games that are still fun to play Anonymous 04/24/2025 (Thu) 05:44:44 No. 356 [Reply] >>397
I often see some edutainment games fondly talked about, but with a lot of them it appears as though nostalgia is doing a lot of the heavy lifting, because let's face it, they're squarely aimed at young children, so there's usually little depth to them in terms of content or gameplay, so there's not much to go back to as an adult. However, there are indeed exceptions, so let's talk about the ones that actually hold up. The Oregon Trail, for one, is still a fun little romp thanks to the fact that you have choices and there's resource management, and though there's an element of randomness which will sometimes bite you in the ass or even end your game through little fault of your own, it at least ensures that no two trips are ever quite the same.

I feel like I should be able to think of at least one beyond The Oregon Trail but I'm struggling. I think the most conventionally educational games I've played have been those in the Civilization series, thanks to the Civilopedia and the general instructional value of demonstrating complex phenomena through interactive simulation - even if the simulation is shot through with major compromises to fun. A very weak model of world history whose very broadest contours are approximately correct is more valuable than no model at all, which is basically what I got from my actual schooling.
Do the campaigns for age of empires 2 count?

>>356 (OP) Tried the Mac version of Oregon Trail for the first time the other day while messing around with MAME (it's still shit, use qemu), and I gotta say I prefer the jank of the Apple ][. Carmen games are better on Mac though.

DS RPGs Anonymous 04/21/2025 (Mon) 21:37:50 No. 260 [Reply]
What are your favorite RPGs to play on the DS? If you're playing any now or finished one recently, feel free to share what you think about that too. The last big one I finished was Dragon Quest IV. My main party for the final chapter was Hero/Alena/Maanya/Minea. (Original, I know.) I played the Japanese version so I had all the party chat and I was really impressed by how much of it there was and how many incredibly minor and specific situations the characters would react to. I found one scene where you had to have both Maanya and Minea in your party and talk to a specific character while being polymorphed. Overall I thought it was pretty good. It didn't blow my mind; there were parts I liked and parts I thought were frustrating. I never ran from any battles as a self-imposed challenge, which as it turns out is the requirement for getting the best title, so that was pretty cool. It's the kind of RPG where I'm really happy I played it all the way to the end, but I wasn't interested in doing the postgame and I don't know if I'll ever replay it. If you're looking for a good RPG, know Japanese, and can find a copy for a decent price, I say go for it, but it's probably not a must-play.

>>369 Does is use the accents?
>>377 Yes, it was translated in the same style as the game itself by the same people.
>>369 I understand why DQ5DS didn't add a bigamy route. You'd have to change so much about the story, gameplay, etc. etc. etc. But just do it anyway. You can be based. It's okay. Make it New Game+ exclusive if you're worried that nobody will pick the original routes anymore. Hell, make it unlock after you play EVERY other route. I'd 100% be willing to play through the game three, four, five times for this.

Arcade Games Anonymous 04/24/2025 (Thu) 22:16:53 No. 390 [Reply]
What was the arcade game you loved playing back in the day? For me, it was The House of the Dead, Metal Slug 2-3, Strikers 1945 II, and Shock Troopers.
For me, nothing ever came close to surpassing Dance Dance Revolution. I too got into a few shumps though: two or three Strikers 1945 games, and one of the Aero Fighters games (the second I think). I always tried for 1CC, and never achieved it. I also got into Police Trainer 2 once, even though I usually don't like light gun games. My college had a machine and I found it surprisingly enjoyable. I think I completed all the challenges in it, or something like that. Everywhere else I was always a casual player in the arcades. As a kid I liked Altered Beast a lot. I only finished it once, by spending lots of quarters and not at all by being good at it.

Nintendo 64 thread Anonymous 05/19/2021 (Wed) 19:47:18 No. 114 [Reply] >>376
Figured I'd make a thread about the mediocre console with a handful of great games. What're your favorite N64 games /vr/? I've been playing the english patch of Custom Robo and Donkey Kong 64 recently, been having fun with both of those games although I wish DK64 wasn't super autistic about collectables.

Anyone remember those VIDEO GAME stores where you could sell your video games or trade them for credit? They were great places to find used Colecovision and Atari software. One of my greatest regrets though, one of these stores offered $10 credit for Test Drive II (Genesis) used, and I saw it at another store brand new for only $5. I could have bought all the $5 programs and traded them for double the credit. But I was too young, and afraid it wouldn't work.

I don't know where this goes! This is a bad OP. If you yourself are not even playing an adventure game to talk about, and don't have anything to say about adventure games, then wait for someone else to make a thread about them.

Infuriating game to play. The rival cars constantly cockblock you in turns --unlike in previous games, their behavior will mimick the characteristics of the cars, such as drifting in turns-- which makes it so if you're close to one of them, you have a 50/50 chance of unavoidably bumping into them and having your lap ruined. They also can bump you from behind which destabilizes your car handling. In addition, the difficulty is balanced like shit (I played in normal and hard difficulties), if your first lap is not perfect, you won't have a chance to win the race even if the following laps are great. So you'll have to retry a lot to get a good first lap, which in turn it feels like RNG-dependent because you don't know if you'll get unlucky with the rivals. That shit ruined my enjoyment of the game. A shame because the courses are very stylistic and I liked to customize my cars' liveries (like in Rage Racer). RRT4 remains the last great RR.
*shrug* I enjoyed it
I've actually been thinking of getting into ridge racer. Should I play the first one or just jump into whichever ones are "the best"?
>>289 RR1's drift mechanics are kind of complicated to grasp, but it short and concise so you don't lose a lot for trying it. But if you don't like it, go for RRT4 and then Rage Racer.

Archaic Sealed Heat Anonymous 04/21/2025 (Mon) 02:37:11 No. 239 [Reply] >>244
I played this for some reason. It is a 2007 JRPG for the DS whose development was (I think?) presided over by Hironobu Sakaguchi a few years after his departure from Square. It was not released in English. I think there's an English patch but I played it on original hardware. It's a pretty good game. The mechanics are generally solid, with a few minor gimmicks that are kinda cool and a few annoyances. The UI is fully stylus-driven which neither helps nor hurts the game. The story is a shallow, under-explained mishmash that is worthy of the director of Final Fantasy 1, especially in that it includes a weird time loop that cannot be fully understood. It is charming enough and somewhat evocative, but it actively avoids taking any interesting risks. I don't really recommend playing this game, but I don't recommend against it either. It's fine. Maritie is best girl. I resented not being able to talk about this game on 4chan's /vr/, since it would have perfectly fit the rules if it would have been released on the PSX, which could have handled it well (except for the stylus support which is never used in the game for any purpose that buttons and a cursor couldn't easily serve). I haven't anything special to say about it here. But now I have made a post about it.

>>239 (OP) was this game not popular at all? there's like 50 piece of art on gelbooru and half of it is just official art
>>244 It seems to have sold about 100k. For reference, of the several DS games with the Final Fantasy name linked to them to be released in the 2006-2008 range, only Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales matched that record. All others achieved 3-10 times as many Japanese sales.

Some of these tracks sound like they came straight out of final fantasy tactics.

What Are (You) Playing? Anonymous 05/05/2021 (Wed) 13:53:01 No. 26 [Reply]
Title says it all. I'm currently playing through The Great Battle II: Last Fighter Twin, my first impressions of the game aren't all that great. You play as SD versions of popular Japanese characters from different franchises in a crossover beat 'em up. Extremely lackluster so far, since all characters play the exact same.

I'm emulating silent hill on my wii and I think I'm getting close to the end. First time I'm playing a silent hill game and I'm enjoying it aside from rough camera angles when you enter some rooms.
Shining the Holy Ark. Just finished the 3rd shrine. It's weird how much lag there is on real hardware, I guess they forgot to optimize the game.

Quake, using a few mods like Arcane Dimensions and Alkaline. Thinking of doing my yearly Half-Life replay soon too.
