Not Enjoying Games Anymore? Anonymous 04/30/2025 (Wed) 06:23:37 Id: d88aab No. 1289861 [Reply] [Last]
This is sort of a meta thread, so feel free to remove it if it's the wrong place for this. Anyway, have you all ever become burnt out on video games? I've felt like recently no matter what I play, I just can't enjoy it. I get the initial enjoyment of starting the game that I've been thinking about for a very long time, but I just don't have the reason or motivation to care to see it through, and the more I force myself to continue the game, the more I hate it. The last time I enjoyed a game was when I was playing through the MGS series. I racked up a list of things I wanted to play or replay because at that moment, I was solely focused on playing MGS. After I finished, I took a short break and decided I wanted to play DMC, since I tried it a long time ago and thought maybe I'd enjoy it on another attempt. I started out liking it, but slowly began to hate it, and eventually I dropped it. I went on to replay Nier after that because I remember very fondly those characters and wanted to check it out again, but didn't have the investment to see past the first few hours. Then a friend bought me Death Stranding, another game I disliked before, but decided I would give another go. After about 5 hours, I lost steam for it. I then tried to play Thief, a brand new game, and while I loved the game's atmosphere and think it's amazingly designed, I quit that one, too, because it just didn't spark anything in me. Now I've been fiending for a Sekiro replay after getting more into samurai films, and Sekiro is one of my favorites, but even now I feel like I'd rather be playing something else, like Ghost of Tsushima or Nier. On the flip side, I played Shantae somewhere in between those games and was hooked, I loved it, and I'm replaying Morrowind right now because it's a game that's near to my heart and am similarly in love with it. I know I can like games, but for some reason, I just can't enjoy the ones I feel so interested in playing. There's just something missing from me that's not letting me enjoy new games. I've mostly just resigned to doing my other hobbies by now. It makes me very frustrated, though, like something's broken about me. It's as if I like the idea of playing these games than actually playing them. I want to like them, but I just can't. Have you anons ever experienced this issue? How did you fix it?

I don't think anyone actually enjoys video games. People only play video games to cope with their miserable sad lives and to escape reality. I don't know anyone who is happy that plays video games.

>>1595360 Kek, pokefags will play the alternatives on the same platform you're just a degenerate falling into astroturfing marketing.
>>1595360 >it's similar to Scarlet and Violet but with many new features and had zero bugs that would ruin the experience 99% chance this is ragebait but first off, it isn't even the same genre as pokemon as others have said, and as you will find out if you play it for 5 minutes, it is a 1:1 ARK clone that replaces the taming mechanic with pokeballs and adds some mechanics from BotW the game was born as a pokemon skinpack for ARK it has fuck all to do with Scarlet and Violet, other than the designs it clearly plagiarized, and the BotW style pokeball second, idk about today, but on launch when everyone was raving about it was absolutely blasted up the ass with bugs and glitches, did you even play it? I don't even know if it ran any better than SV on a machine comparable to a switch the reason it was so infamous is because it's a soulless hodgepodge of all the highest selling games at the time Fortnite-like movement and bitches, gadgets from BotW, pokemon catching mechanics and creatures, factorio gameplay, all over ARK's basic structure it is a symptom of a dead industry addicted to remix culture

>>1495109 I'd say that a successful indie game also has to allow for infinite replayability in the form of customizing their difficulty or allowing for player expression (i.e. movement options, player choices affecting the game more than just on the base story etc.) I think Balatro is a great example of that because the basic rules are very simple but you can just add to them indefinitely until it's an unrecognizable mess from the original game. The Death of Arena Shooters Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 01:31:26 Id: 54ddba No. 1092808 [Reply] [Last]
Why did arena shooters die off? Now all anybody plays for fps games is cod, apex legends, valorant, or some other garbage. If you can't find enjoyment in the gameplay aspect of a game inside of multiplayer and single player that game is shit and the only reason you like it is because you like competing with other people. I can play UT99 all day against bots and have a good time yet if I did that in a game like cod shit would be so unfun it's not even funny

>>1206326 There have been better written versions of this explanation, but this is it and has always been it. Arena shooters were only truly popular for two or three years, quickly became an niche, and died out. They were never some staple or mainstay of gaming. The first true arena shooter is probably 1999's Unreal Tournament and the last big one was 2007's Unreal Tournament 3, an usual outlier released years into the genre's decline. There is only 8 years between "first of its kind" and "belated swansong". Overwatch has been around longer than arena FPS. Let it go, 35+ anons.
>>1610848 Other part was, when these games came out, PC gaming and multiplayer were a novel concept. You had a steady stream of new players getting their first PC and a 56k modem and wanted to try playing against more than one person (It was common to connect to someone local because the phone charges back then would have killed you for long distance). The lack of competition from other games also helped.
>>1610915 As said, this has been much better explained. And as you mention, the reason arena shooters even took off was the novelty and lack of competition. I'd argue there were already better MP FPS like Team Fortress and CS, but for the masses arena shooters were a good entry point. Very simple, easy to learn, high skill ceiling. Another reason they died is because the wider genre evolved while arena FPS didn't, it was hard to compare UT3 to TF2 - both 2007 - and decide "UT3 is the game I want to main". That goes for a lot of other MP FPS of the era. Arena shooters were a fad early in the history of online shooters, and not even a long lived one.

Star Wars Galaxies Anonymous 07/18/2025 (Fri) 14:25:43 Id: a17d51 No. 1574062 [Reply]
It's been a long time when I had to put thought into a thread, so bear with me. >What is it? For those who it bypassed, Star Wars Galaxies is an old sandbox MMO that many who played back then still hold near and dear to their hearts. Being able to multispec and do whatever you want, without being constrained in any fashion. Be a regular human, a Twi'lek slut, or a Rodian who's really into arguing race relations in every cantina. >Isn't that game fucking dead? Yes. Long dead. 2 decades. But because of reasons, it was brought back under several different server emus. Mainly Pre-CU to post, for those who have preferences. I don't know if the comments about it being leaked code were true, but fuck it, it's nice to have a choice. >Okay, so how do you play? Stole links from >>Reddit, but if they work. Links for game. Thought it'd be fun to see if anyone still existed from that time, or if there was even interest to play it together. Be it emu or whatever other flavour takes an interest.

posting on new board reminder that cdda is a turn based game therefore not a skill based game Why did this game suddenly EXPLODE in popularity a few years ago? PZ has been in development forever but it went mainstream very suddenly and I can't tell what caused that. What state is the game in currently? I last played a 2019 build until I got bored of it. Are NPCs finally in? I remember they were briefly in a test branch like a decade ago

>>1590239 If NPCs do get added do you think even a rudimentary story/series of goals would help pace the game into making the player engage with the larger world, and not just hide in a shed growing food on a roof? I know it's a survival sandbox but having survivors to aid along or hinder, raider camps to sabotage, or military checkpoints to break through all sound like they would add to the variety of encounters. Otherwise what would the point of NPCs even be, just other survivors to watch get killed on their own within like ten seconds of running into a horde?
<<1590239 Oh, I think I remember you! Angry because it's a survival game and not milsim autism. >>1595352 I think the issue with NPCs is how difficult they would be to implement in a game like Project Zomboid. At best, they'd be vendors or skill trainers. At worst, they'd be slightly more advanced zombies. PZ is a huge game with a lot of interacting systems, building NPC AI that could handle that and feel organic doesn't seem like a task a random indie team could handle. Actually good video game AI is infamously elusive.
>>1589965 >>1590239 PZ was always popular since inception, it had shitton of people making videos and streams about, popularity flares up ever couple of years with updates and such.

Deadly Standing Part Moar: On the Princess /v/each Anonymous 06/26/2025 (Thu) 20:19:11 Id: 52e3da No. 1506502 [Reply]
In this installment Samuel Porter Bridges receives lessons from Mamoru Oshii on becoming a ninja turtle slash rabbit. And something about an Italian Solid Snake knockoff. Also the AAA industry gets BTFOed by a title that looks better than their shoddy gaytracing with only precalculated lighting. It's tailor-made for this board. I was waffling on whether to make this thread since for now the game is a timed exclusive for Piss5, but it seems like there's sufficient fodder for discussion. DS2 is going to make its way to every platform eventually and it's virtually a movie anyways. Plus the trailers spoil the game's entire plot.

It turned out not to be a movie game after all, with its cutscenes taking the form of short skits. The result ends up bizarre if you ask me. Reedus must have been told to act even more deadpan this time around so he fully came off as some self insert homunculus instead of a human character. The Uncomfortable Man. An uncomfortable director? There wasn't much screentime and none of the characters got enough of it, the game periodically called me into the deen's office then quickly spit me back out into the gameplay world to fuck around in. The last act had the merit of being incredibly more entertaining than last time. Otherwise the game's good to play, i'd say much improved even if the systemic flaws remained identical.
This game has popped up in the news again but not for what you think. Truly an endorsement. Death Stranding 2's graphics are so good UK citizens have been using them to bypass British age verification and face ID laws by taking in-game photos of Norman Reedus's face https://archive.fo/siPZz

>>1308042 Sorry for the late notice, but there's one specific modification you should make to BetterBlobs. Go to zzz_tribal_flavour_events_c3rd.txt and dummy out tribal_flavour_events.451 and tribal_flavour_events.4206. They are a fucking pain because they make you and the AI release tribal vassals when you gain any land which the mod defines as inhospitable. This causes masses of unnecessary tribal vassals.
Since there's now a Bronze Age to Imperator converter, I've decided to try out Bronze Age Reborn, and I have to say that it's not very good. It's the closest thing you can get to a high performance Imperator sandbox, but it has basically none of the QoL features and entirely none of the flavor of Invictus, despite being maintained by the same lead developer. The technologies aren't even changed. Without an end date, you can just keep going until you WC or get bored, and it's starting to look like I'm going to WC with Egypt's 11th Dynasty. Speaking of Egypt, there are neither dynasty mechanics nor missions to reform the Egyptian faith so it's more warlike nor events regarding Atenism. You just play Egypt like any other nation, but you have a handful of short mission trees. Neither the Hittites nor the migrant hordes of the Bronze Age Collapse appear, so nothing interesting really happens. I wish the converter and mod would ape mechanics and flavor from Crisis of the Third Century and Gift of the Nile.
I've been playing Imperator with Chaotic AI turn on as Carthage. I've reached a point where I don't know what I'm doing anymore. I conquered all of Italy, most of Iberia, half of Egypt, all of North Africa, Judea, and the Sinai, and I'm integrating a tribe that owns 3/4 of Gaul and all of England and Wales. I have about ten accepted cultures, which might be too many, but research is going well, and I accepted them to gain their unique techs. The Macedonians are my biggest present enemy and are blocking me from completing my mission tree because they hold Greece and Anatolia, but I only have 150 years before the C3C starts. I'm considering decentralizing my empire after I break the Macedonians. Here are a few things I've learned from this run: The mod "Realistic Tribes" is completely useless if you plan on making tribal vassals. It causes their national civilization to tick down every month, which would force them to migrate if they ever actually moved their capitals. Instead, I had to cheat a few times because they would practically never consider, and especially not finish, reforming. You should watch out for the mod "Paler Romans". It completely fucks up the history files. Characters are shuffled everywhere. I learned that the hard way on some failed runs. If you're playing with Border Cleaner, lower z_border_cleaner_manual_size_threshold in z_border_cleaner_values.txt to 1. Add always = no under is_party_type = democratic_party in senate_objectives_generic.txt, senate_objectives_roman.txt, and senate_objectives_car.txt. Realistically, the democrats wouldn't push for expanded citizenship in almost any nation, and citizenship in IR doesn't do what it did historically. Playing as a republic is more stable than playing as a monarchy. If you don't plan on integrating the majority culture of a city with a capture event, or don't plan on releasing a nation which will own that city anytime soon, just destroy the city. There are typically plenty of other cities in the area.

Worst video game titles Anonymous 01/01/2025 (Wed) 00:06:43 Id: 09dc29 No. 1056183 [Reply] [Last]
We often hear about the worst video games of all time, but what about the worst video game titles of all time? Starting off with two of the most obvious ones >Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days That's pronounced "three hundred fifty eight over two". Yes, they want you to pronounce it "over" but didn't bother writing it as an over. It only "works" in Japanese because furigana can tell you its pronounced that way, but its dumb even there. >Infinite Undiscovery Either an "undiscovery" is "lost", which would mean total amnesia (even walking, potentially even breathing), or an "undiscovery" is "not a discovery", which means the name is saying everything within is nothing new. (dis)honorable mention >Idea no Hi This one tries to make a English pun that does not actually work. The official name in "Day of the Idea" and 1: While "idea" in standard romanization, "イデア" isn't pronounced anything like the English "Idea" (as in thought) 2: "イデア" is a person, so the definite article here is just Engrish.

>>1594256 >>1594773 This wasn't nearly as much of a problem when these games came out. Especially Runner. Nobody was trying to do a web search for Commodore games. Even during the PS1 era, that wasn't where sales or advertising came from. The boxart would matter a lot more than the title. Hell, you're reminding of the show people now call "Batman: The Animated Series," which just did not actually have an explicit title when it was actually on. There is no text in the show's intro. You see a picture of Batman and that's all the kids need to know what they're watching. See a picture of that astronaut dude on the cover of Runner, and maybe kids will want to buy it. Titles can help or hurt, but it's not as big as you make it seem, especially due to not being able to search it with technology that didn't exist yet.
>>1056213 The gibberish name "Fenyx" is really the thing that takes it from "generic" to "awful". Even with "monster" (and presumably Olympic/Olympus) off limits, there's way better options for something based on Greek mythology.
(1.51 MB 640x915 Ninja Gaiden.png)

>>1592242 On a similar note. Not a bad title by any means but completely nonsensical when you actually understand what it means. The original is of course Ninja Ryukenden which translates to something like Ninja: Dragon Sword. The American title, Ninja Gaiden (which no one in the US knew how to pronounce until The Wizard game out) is instead Ninja: Side Story. As a complete side note, the cover makes it looks like it's taking place right during the Nuclear War of 199X, and given the enemy and boss designs and even some of the music I'm pretty sure this is entirely intentional.

There's an overlooked feature that I've noticed: there's no ray tracing used, yet the textures and other rendering tech makes it almost look like it's there. It's also running on Unreal Engine 4 instead of 5. Are there any mods that implement any of it for fun? Somehow the similar but (mostly) asset-flipped Bright Memory: Infinite meanwhile has ray tracing effects and runs on Unreal 4 too (the difference is that it's also on GOG).
Does this game play like any of the Nier games at all or are all the comparisons not to the gameplay? To be clear, I liked the movement and the "freeform" combat the most in both of them.
>>1597172 I'd say it plays very differently.
