A stereotypically Polish immersive sim was released into early access recently. It looks and plays like EYE Divine Cybermancy with a bit more inventory and gun autism, among other things. Marie looks very cute.

Which video game story comes the closest to Aristotelian perfection? Anonymous 07/26/2025 (Sat) 05:09:54 Id: 0cbb67 No. 1605074 [Reply]
By Aristotelian perfection, I mean which video game story comes the closest to meeting the standards for a perfect story Aristotle lays down in his Poetics? I've been thinking about this for a while, and the closest I can think of is Metal Gear Solid 1. >It has a fairly solid unity of action. There are a few diversions, but most of the plot beats contribute directly to the main action of Snake stopping the terrorists >It takes place in less than 24 hours >It takes place in one location (Shadow Moses) >the characters clearly express their thoughts through their words and actions >Snake and Liquid are long lost relatives who are forced to fight each other by fate >Even though Snake survives, the uncertainty of his fate due to Foxdie still provokes fear and pity in the audience (we know from later games that he lives, but I'm just talking about MGS1 as a self-contained story here) >The game makes excellent use of spectacle, which Aristotle liked
14 posts and 5 images omitted.
>>1606497 The 24 hour limit is really limiting for video games due to games complex enough to have a "real" story also being large enough to warrant longer stories. Come to think of it though, a lot of the early "excuse" stories do qualify., especially if one takes "single physical location" to include bigger locations like "city" >a giant ape has kidnapped a woman and climbed to high parts of a construction site with her >a mad scientist has turned helper robots into villains and now they're rampaging across the city For a straight, relatively modern, example what about Portal? >the tragedy is the AI went crazy or (counting Portal 2) that Cave Johnson stuck his secretary into a computer to become a crazy AI >no indication is given that either game takes place in anything more or less than real time >everything takes place at the Enrichment Center or (in the ending) its campus
>>1606817 Aristotle focuses mostly on tragedy, but some of his points, like the three unities, can be applied to other genres. The main reason he prefers tragedy to epic poems (which usually were usually either quest narratives, war narratives, or both) is because they tend to have a greater unity of action, whereas epics often have diversions that distract too much from the main plot.

RTS but Chill City Town builders Anonymous 07/20/2025 (Sun) 00:15:20 Id: af9215 No. 1583395 [Reply]
When I was a kid I loved spending hours building things in rts games but the problem is that these were always focused on war and not on economics or aesthetics. there were not many options focused on decorating or a sandbox, it was limited by rounds, time or the campaigns or resources that are limited and not infinite. I used to create beatiful cities in AoE singleplayer play and editor mode I don't like Simcity bacause is too modern and less fantasy or medieval. I still remember the era of flash games like this that were on facebook. >Also Is there any game that's a partially rts and city or town builder with fantasy or medieval features that is chill to play? something to see activity in the city or town or inside houses-craft-shops as if they were peasents from the settlers. The closest games doing something like this I found was >The Settlers >Spellforce >Cultures: The Discovery of Vinland >Rise and Fall: Civilizations at war >Stronghold >Beasts and Bumpkins >Black and white >Knights and Merchants >Heroes of Might and Magic

>>1583639 From the same devs of Pharaoh there's <<Zeus: Master of Olympus>> with expansion packs. The mechanics are very similar afaik, but the art, music, missions, and mythology are really good. Along with Stronghold2 it's my top pick. Dwarf Fortress might also count, they did a UI overhaul recently to make it more accessible.

You ever had a second playthrough change your opinion on a game? I just did. I realized 2 days ago I had never done a retard run of fallout 1, so I did. Fallout 1 is still an amazing game but all my other playthroughs had a tough beginning but easier endgame. This retard with a knife though was easily cutting through rad scorpions and raiders like it was nothing. It wasn't until later when I tried to fight supermutants that the problems started. Even then the knife wasn't really the problem, it was more about me getting 1 shot by gatling guns. It did make me wonder about a lot of things. I do not think it is possible to beat the game 1st time as a retard. I have no idea how you would know without meta knowledge that the cathedral is where the master lives. It was also this playthrough that I found out that drugs can stack. You can take multiple mentats and just be a normal person until the drugs wear out. That does kinda go against the spirit of the playthrough but it did allow me to speak to Harold properly. You can also just take 2 rad-x and be immune to radiation. Would have been great to know before I lost an hour of progress to instant death radiation. I am also amazed by how much dialogue they wrote for the low intelligence players. Some of it I assume was intended for players who were using drugs and got their intelligence lowered. Even then though I was seeing unique dialogue even up to the final boss. I was expecting a bit more of a speech from a man who just lost everything to a fucking idiot with a sledge and a rocket launcher but having anything is already good. Now I am just wondering if I want to replay 1 again or should I try playing 2? I have tried 2 before and it never grips me like the first game does.

>>1620368 Both their appreciation stems from how the Legion made their territories safe from bandits and raiders. But I wouldn't say either supports them outright, you can still slaughter The Fort and Caesar without them so much as making a complaint. I don't know if Ulysses would have worked as a Legion follower. It's his dialogue the issue, how many players would have had the patience to sit through line after line of apologetics? Guess it all depends on how much the other writers would have reigned in Avellone. Still as a former tribal and high-ranking member of the Legion, his point-of-view would have been unique. Coincidentally, him and Boone would have both been the most socially elevated companions you could have gotten. Not as elevated as a potential Victor though :^) The one thing I don't get about them is the bull. Shouldn't it have two heads like Brahmin do? Are there un-radiated, normal Bos Taurus in southeast America. Maybe some billionaire Texan built a vault just for his longhorn herd. >>1620272 Considering Fallout 4's synths sure, emphasise their marionette-like movements and they'd fit even better. But considering a retrofuturistic aesthetic I think they'd be too out-of-place. Too human for the Fallout Universe. I think your idea might work if you made their heads less human.
>>1620390 Ulysses in Lonesome Road and Ulysses in the initial draft were almost completely different characters. That's why I included "original". >the bull It's iconography from Caesar. If there were two heads on the bull, it would mean the Legion isn't unified. Also, I doubt there are two-headed bulls in the wasteland. Two-headed cows have some usefulness, but two-headed bulls would try to rip themselves in half. Just think about how their horns would work.

https://gf2exilium.sunborngame.com/ So this just came out globally recently. Is anyone playing it? Any fans of the original mobage/kusoge? This one plays a lot like XCOM, kind of. The similarities end pretty quickly when compared to XCOM but it's the best one most people will be familiar with. The visual style is 3D anime, but in my opinion, tastefully done. Got around to pirating this finally, and more power to whatever psychotics out there that have the patience to play this game. I think around day 30 of getting fucked in the ass repeatedly by RNG I modded infinite resources and even with that trying to put together rooms to make progress was tedious, and all I did was get the straightforward, unsatisfying non-ending. The idea of a roguelite puzzle game isn't complete anathema to me, I just don't think that they needed to go as far as they did to null progress and waste time in between the time and effort needed to solve some of these esoteric puzzles. It just isn't worth the effort, at least not to me. The puzzles themselves can be fun and I liked what was being built up of the story/setting/characters but I definitely wasn't hooked enough to put up with this.
>>1445731 RNG definitely sucks, but for the record that wasn't the ending.
Finally got around to playing this. An excellent game and it's definitely fun, but I threw the towel at around the moment I started reading The Clue and got 4 Sigils. There's definitely a lot to enjoy in the game, even if you struggle against the RNG on principle (which is frankly a lot easier to deal with than some people here imply), but somehow they went crazier and farther than even Noita puzzles and that's just... not healthy unless you're in the turbo autismo territory. Just lightly gazing at The Clue fills me with an indescribable laziness, just imagining all the obtuse hard work it takes for just the slightest hints at the most obscure of things. Also not having some sort of database where you can look up all text you've read before is super annoying for no good reason. I ended up combining screenshots, book recordings and notes manually but jesus fucking christ what a hassle. And then it some fucking how gets even worse than that. I defended the RNG earlier, but some requirements are clearly very annoying to reach for some endings. Not even Noita was this bad, holy fuck. 8/10 Outer Wilds is still better.

Not Enjoying Games Anymore? Anonymous 04/30/2025 (Wed) 06:23:37 Id: d88aab No. 1289861 [Reply] [Last]
This is sort of a meta thread, so feel free to remove it if it's the wrong place for this. Anyway, have you all ever become burnt out on video games? I've felt like recently no matter what I play, I just can't enjoy it. I get the initial enjoyment of starting the game that I've been thinking about for a very long time, but I just don't have the reason or motivation to care to see it through, and the more I force myself to continue the game, the more I hate it. The last time I enjoyed a game was when I was playing through the MGS series. I racked up a list of things I wanted to play or replay because at that moment, I was solely focused on playing MGS. After I finished, I took a short break and decided I wanted to play DMC, since I tried it a long time ago and thought maybe I'd enjoy it on another attempt. I started out liking it, but slowly began to hate it, and eventually I dropped it. I went on to replay Nier after that because I remember very fondly those characters and wanted to check it out again, but didn't have the investment to see past the first few hours. Then a friend bought me Death Stranding, another game I disliked before, but decided I would give another go. After about 5 hours, I lost steam for it. I then tried to play Thief, a brand new game, and while I loved the game's atmosphere and think it's amazingly designed, I quit that one, too, because it just didn't spark anything in me. Now I've been fiending for a Sekiro replay after getting more into samurai films, and Sekiro is one of my favorites, but even now I feel like I'd rather be playing something else, like Ghost of Tsushima or Nier. On the flip side, I played Shantae somewhere in between those games and was hooked, I loved it, and I'm replaying Morrowind right now because it's a game that's near to my heart and am similarly in love with it. I know I can like games, but for some reason, I just can't enjoy the ones I feel so interested in playing. There's just something missing from me that's not letting me enjoy new games. I've mostly just resigned to doing my other hobbies by now. It makes me very frustrated, though, like something's broken about me. It's as if I like the idea of playing these games than actually playing them. I want to like them, but I just can't. Have you anons ever experienced this issue? How did you fix it?

I don't even know if it ran any better than SV on a machine comparable to a switch the reason it was so infamous is because it's a soulless hodgepodge of all the highest selling games at the time Fortnite-like movement and bitches, gadgets from BotW, pokemon catching mechanics and creatures, factorio gameplay, all over ARK's basic structure it is a symptom of a dead industry addicted to remix culture

Do you miss 1v1 invasions? Anonymous 07/19/2025 (Sat) 18:58:33 Id: 950f1f No. 1582464 [Reply]
whenever I floated this around on halfcuck I got dogpiled by snoyndians, so I'm curious about what people's opinion actually is on this originally Dark Souls, and moreso DS2, blew up specifically because of invasions, not in spite of them, but not only has Fromsoftware functionally removed invasions from the games since DS3 onwards, but now they're set to completely embrace retarded shit like seamless coop, which simply breaks DS3 and Elden Ring and makes them feel like you're grinding an MMORPG. Nightreign is at least designed for coop, but what irks the most is the fact that they went out of their way to replace DS and DS2 with aesthetically inferior versions without invasions. You can't even buy the originals anymore. invasions were such a big deal that other games were copying the concept, like DOOM:Eternal (sadly due to fucked up networking I don't think anyone has ever experienced it) but it feels like one day randomly people unanimously decided it's not fun anymore excluding retarded takes like "but what about the 1/100000 minmaxer trolling newbies???" or "what if I get hanked?!?" am I insane for thinking this or do other people miss the concept as well? I think it was much more genre-defining than their specific Action RPG formula still can't believe you can go through all of ER and never see another player unless you summon 2 other guys, at least DS3 had invasion areas on launch, though I think they're gone now

>>1599456 One could also cease being a faggot misanthrope and look for an active community wherever it is
>>1599323 It's not just fromsoftware's fault, blaming them alone for the netdecking issue is dumb. Yeah these games can be cryptic but that's half the fun, figuring it out for yourself and experimenting. Most people nowadays don't have interest in doing that though, and that's a problem across a lot of games, not just souls. I think it has something to do with normalfaggots not wanting to fuck around as much and something related to crowd appeal but I can't be sure. Oddly enough I think you have a point with the soul memory thing, the only games that netdecking/lack of variety wasn't an issue in that I've played lately were Lords of the Fallen (2023) and Salt and Sacrifice. Both had basically nonexistent level matchmaking and scaled invaders up or down instead. They still had their "metas" mind you but just like the Demon Souls, DS1, and DS2 days you barely saw them and instead found a fair bit of variety. Salt and Sacrifice was greatly helped by its covenant system though, with several different types of invaders and co-op summons with varying goals, another comparison you can make to earlier vs later Dark Souls games with covenants being lamer in 3 and then gone in ER. Of course Remnant 2 serves as a counterexample to the matchmaking thing regarding netdecking, however, since there is literally no matchmaking there, just world scaling with host's numerical power level (derived from weapon upgrades and archetype level). Remant 2 is a strange fucking anomaly in that regard as a whole though, it's pure PVE so you think people would be willing to experiment more, but you barely see any experimentation and you see EVEN LESS of such at lower difficulties, where you think you'd see people using wackier and less optimal builds and use off-meta weapons more. The netdecking thing with Elden Ring is also strange. As a guy who does a ton more jolly co-op than invasions/duels you see tons of variety in the PvE builds people run, minus the 110-150 range where most PVP builds are, but invaders have notably less than hosts. I think people running specific anti-gank setups could be a reason but I doubt it's the whole story. Duelists are even fucking worse and it gets to a point you feel like you're fighting the same ten or so people over and over due to the lack of variety. PVE builds still have their meta, I'd be a filthy rich if I got paid for every quad-buffing Varre-bullgoat/Varre-raptorcloack bleed build or every "haha comet azur go brr" build I saw after all, but you don't see clearly "I looked this build up on the internet" shit nearly as often.
>>1598241 >>1599456 can't tell if you guys are fucking with me, but to spell it out, obviously the entire point of random invasions is that neither player knows what they're going to get the whole fun of it is seeing what kinda builds and playstyles other people are cooking up, and maybe you see something you like and try to pivot into that, or make a mental note to try it on a different character if you're just playing with a small group of friends it'll stagnate very quickly This is such an effective tool to lengthen playtime, World of Warcraft for example keeps buffing and nerfing classes/specs on a carousel every 3 months so people get oneshot by an ele shaman and go "man I wanna play that" and make an alt, which is another 30h+ of gameplay to get ready, 1 of those being for leveling you really think none of these MMOs can figure out a fucking DPS sim that 90% of the playerbase uses and balance accordingly? kinda went off topic, but you get what I'm saying, running into randoms is more fun and more effective at stimulating organic replayability

The Death of Arena Shooters Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 01:31:26 Id: 54ddba No. 1092808 [Reply] [Last]
Why did arena shooters die off? Now all anybody plays for fps games is cod, apex legends, valorant, or some other garbage. If you can't find enjoyment in the gameplay aspect of a game inside of multiplayer and single player that game is shit and the only reason you like it is because you like competing with other people. I can play UT99 all day against bots and have a good time yet if I did that in a game like cod shit would be so unfun it's not even funny

>>1206326 There have been better written versions of this explanation, but this is it and has always been it. Arena shooters were only truly popular for two or three years, quickly became an niche, and died out. They were never some staple or mainstay of gaming. The first true arena shooter is probably 1999's Unreal Tournament and the last big one was 2007's Unreal Tournament 3, an usual outlier released years into the genre's decline. There is only 8 years between "first of its kind" and "belated swansong". Overwatch has been around longer than arena FPS. Let it go, 35+ anons.
>>1610848 Other part was, when these games came out, PC gaming and multiplayer were a novel concept. You had a steady stream of new players getting their first PC and a 56k modem and wanted to try playing against more than one person (It was common to connect to someone local because the phone charges back then would have killed you for long distance). The lack of competition from other games also helped.
>>1610915 As said, this has been much better explained. And as you mention, the reason arena shooters even took off was the novelty and lack of competition. I'd argue there were already better MP FPS like Team Fortress and CS, but for the masses arena shooters were a good entry point. Very simple, easy to learn, high skill ceiling. Another reason they died is because the wider genre evolved while arena FPS didn't, it was hard to compare UT3 to TF2 - both 2007 - and decide "UT3 is the game I want to main". That goes for a lot of other MP FPS of the era. Arena shooters were a fad early in the history of online shooters, and not even a long lived one.

Touch Detective Anonymous 05/25/2025 (Sun) 13:26:58 Id: 1be7d3 No. 1400250 [Reply]
You might know that little mushroom dude Funghi/Nameko as a merchandisable mascot in the Land of the Rising Sun, but his spinoffs (unfortunately) overshadowed the game he first appeared in So give this underrated gem some attention with this thread

>>1400250 I like those games because a guy on 4v said they were good, and that got me to play them. And I like them enough to get the Switch Port. And that's things honestly, a botch job from what I played. I only done all of 1 and that had some really stupid graphical errors. Hopefully, 2 is better both as a game and as a port. 1 had some stupid puzzles.

>>1400250 It was really weird to find out that Nameko was more popular than Touch Detective, years after I played Touch Detective on the DS. I still love that game, I should really go and play 3. >>1402416 >Any official lewd of a character from an E-rated DS game You might be retarded.
>>1402284 This is interesting
