What happened to this franchise? It was once upon a time a very popular and beloved series. Did a zombie game really ruin their momentum? Or was it Hideo Kojima leaving? I have a lot of great memories playing these games and the only thing they released in the past 7 years are remasters. The remaster collection did great but I can't see why they couldn't make another solid (what a great joke lmao) game in the series for modern fans. If you ever played MGS1 on the Playstation 1, there was nothing like it. No doubt it catapulted the PS1 to levels it never would have done otherwise.

>>1877316 it's sadly how people treat the trendsetters. associate the long-term damage to the industry and also others making shitty games with the trendsetter in the 7th gen everyone hated COD due to other games being COD clones, even though COD itself was good until WaW same for Assassins Creed. people hate it because other franchises and even other genres started copying the open world slop elements of AC and even the AC franchise itself dragging on too fucking long with nothing new, even though the first 3 games were good. imagine this with other franchises. if video games copied OoT for 30 years straight and even Zelda games kept milking the OoT formula, people would've HATED OoT and would've marked it as "when gaming went to shit".
>>1879197 I hate Assassin's Creed because I just hate the games.
>>1879197 Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed were never good, you just had bad taste back then. Only games I personally like are good.

Since a new game has come out recently and this thread has been moderately busy, it would make sense to create a new one so it has the benefit of being bumpable, and will thus catch the attention of more anons. If this thread was super busy, it would be best to stick to this one and not make a new one. >just let it die and continue on the >>>/vp/ board's general discussion? Seeing how this thread has gotten attention, anons are either unaware that that other board exists or would just rather talk on /v/ about it. Or, more likely, they frequent both. now that (previous) /v/ is gone I can be honest: yes I saw the nuMarathon and genuinely think it has potential I liked the visuals, some of the gameplay, the music and I can tell it's going to build up on the lore from the previous games. also it's making me want to play the older games too just for the previous reason >it's an extraction shooter yea I know, always wanted to try that anyway discuss and post images NOW

>You said something nice about Marathon? You're a marketer or Bungie employee!! Genuinely mind broken at this point. >>1876785 Obviously this is the honeymoon phase of the game but it has good atmosphere, shooting feels good, playing with good players and against good players is exciting. Voice comms and teamwork can really make or break a match. >>1877992 Yeah I saw they were using art by another artist but I couldn't give less of a shit. I do not care that Destiny players are angry because their game is no longer the focus. I do not care that this isn't like the original Marathon games. I'm taking the game now as it exist and for me it is fun. I'm more worried about them pushing the game into becoming yet another hero shooter which is where it's headed apparently. It does however seem to have an overarching story, or glimpses of it, with all the factions. What they really need to do is keep pushing for more teamwork-focused gameplay and systems, that's really where the whole fun of it is.

Great series with iffy first entries Anonymous 09/18/2025 (Thu) 21:27:37 Id: 7b4390 No. 1765127 [Reply] [Last]
>Just Cause Less iffy and more downright bad, many JC fans have never played or even seen the first game in the series, leading to the joke "Just Cause starts at 2". Buggy, empty, repetitive, janky, did I mention buggy? Because it is SO buggy, it's bugging out absolutely all the time at every moment, there is never a period where this game is not struggling to keep itself from collapsing; vehicles that don't work, physics that don't work, explosives that glitch more often than they function, NPCs that can't stop themselves from killing their own, a camera that frequently finds itself under the map. Realizing the enormous scale of the map will strike you with awe the first time you play it, and the gameplay will ensure there's no second time. >Arena While having some very cool elements and a fun spell creation system, TES1 is an odd and obviously slap dashed game that went through wild development swings. The dungeons are infamously a mess and it's so unbalanced towards magic that playing a non-spellcasting class is effectively challenge mode. It struggles from a lack of real content beyond procgen dungeon crawling, and while it is fun for a dungeon crawler from the era, there are better in the genre. The sequel improves upon it in every way. >Codename 47 Just not fun. If you've played C47 you know it's terrible, shocking it ever got a sequel let alone turning into one of gaming's premier stealth franchises. Beyond the very toybox-esque levels you'd expect for a game from 2000, everything about it feels unpleasant and it's frequently very difficult in a bad way, even the camera is in an awkward position. Most of the hits aren't well designed and some appear literally impossible to do stealthily. C47 also commits one of the worst sins of a stealth game: the AI is wildly inconsistent and hard to predict.

>>1876548 Crystalis came out way after Zelda. And saying Mario 3 is better than 1 doesn't mean Mario 1 is "iffy." If the thread was "games with sequels/imitators that improved upon them," there would be many more examples. Practically every first entry in a series or genre is improved upon by later games. Also, Mario World is too easy. Mario 3 is better. Though it would be nice to have proper saving and backtracking.
>>1878123 >Mario World is too easy. Mario 3 is better. The harder levels in Mario World are tougher than anything in 3, in part because they're so much longer.

Stop Killing Games (pt. 2) Anonymous 07/07/2025 (Mon) 03:23:17 Id: 0dc424 No. 1540204 [Reply] [Last]
Headed by Ross Scott of Accursed Farms, Stop Killing Games is an initiative aiming to establish a standard in the EU for videogame companies to necessarily provide an End-of-Life (EOL) solution once publisher-supported servers and services go offline. Originally spurred by focus on Ubisoft's The Crew, the movement quickly grew into encompassing countless titles that have in recent years published, failed, and been taken (permanently) offline, restricted and removed from the access of owners. Already having hit the required minimum of 1,000,000 signatures, the European Citizens' Initiative is likely to be presented before EU Parliament in the coming months. Current controversies surrounding the campaign include a scathing overview by infamous Twitch streamer Pirate Software (aka Jason "Thor" Hall), posts and videos in support by countless internet personalities (such as Louis Rossman and other more well-known gaming YouTubers such as PewDiePie and MoistCr1TiKaL) as well as the suspicion and worry of botting by numerous parties to boost the signature count to the required minimum. As of now, the campaign has just over 1.21 million signatures and counting. >Relevant links: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/ https://stopkillinggamestracker.pages.dev/

>>1755088 guess its kind of like the people sealing old cartridges in resin/glass cases instead of using them, plain stupidity
>>1755088 Aside from hoarding autism there is also the idea of preserving media until one day copyright finally runs out. Or, considering this is Embracer until they acquire the rights for a remaster. There are for example websites that archive old game source code without access to the public until hopefully one day something can be done with it. https://www.wcnews.com/news/update/11167
>>1755975 None of those discs or cartridges get "preserved" by not being opened or played. They'll degrade like anything else would over time and simply not boot, or more likely that all the original hardware won't run anymore. Actual game preservation is simply backing up the files with redundancy and pushing for legislation that erodes copyright law and enables emulation. Collecting games is just faggot plastic hoarding for depressed man children chasing nostalgia.

Games where you're an unabashedly terrible person? Anonymous 10/13/2025 (Mon) 20:56:22 Id: a9f840 No. 1844102 [Reply] [Last]
I was going to title this "awful protagonists" instead, though it sounds better it might be misunderstood. And not games where you being The Worst is a le epic twist in the last 5 minutes or some subtext, but a very core part of the protagonist and their context within the narrative. I've always been interested in this, because most games have you as: >literally Jesus >morally conflicted emotionally complex anti-hero >Milquetoast McGee >blank slate >[Press A to SAVE BABY] [Press B to KICK BABY into THE SUN] So having the protagonist be a bad, unlikable, unjustifiable person is a rare and interesting choice.

>>1866411 Funnily enough, I finally played mouthwashing since its spooky season and I had this in my backlog since last year, and I found it quite enjoyable. It did feel weird that my interactive novel was at times interrupted with segments of gameplay, but I loved the atmosphere of the game as you try to put together the pieces of what has happened . Its short enough where its just around the length of a movie, and it delivers a very self-contained experience that makes it the sort of thing you don't mind playing once a year during the spooky season.
>>1866411 Its ok. The narrative is the best part, but all the discussion around the game kinda gives it away which, that in turn makes the twist less effective. A whodunnit when you already know the who isn't very fun. Without that, the game is a weak point and click adventure game. There are some puzzles that are fun but nothing too crazy. Then you have sections like the warehouse with the stupid invisible monster that is just fucking awful. Artstyle is 5th gen-adjacent. Not much to say there. It has some effective sequences but nothing trippy enough to note. It's not even particularly gore-y outside of Curly. tl;dr its an Amnesia TDD clone with a decent narrative twist but nothing to go too far out of your way for.

Why do some people think Okami is one of Kamiya's weakest games? Anonymous 09/20/2025 (Sat) 06:25:53 Id: 411d98 No. 1769723 [Reply]
I know that it's very easy and its combat has very little depth but I don't see these points as flaws. Okami is not an arcadey action game like DMC and Bayonetta, instead it's an action adventure game. It's way more experiential and that's amazing. I love its art style, its world, and its characters. All of those things are as important as the gameplay in this type of game and Okami and nails all of these things. Also, I don't get why so many people have issue with its length because if Okami was shorter then the experiential aspects of the game would be greatly diminished as Clover would have to cut a lot of areas and characters in order to make the game shorter.
