Worst video game titles Anonymous Id: 09dc29 No. 1056183 [Reply] [Last]
We often hear about the worst video games of all time, but what about the worst video game titles of all time? Starting off with two of the most obvious ones >Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days That's pronounced "three hundred fifty eight over two". Yes, they want you to pronounce it "over" but didn't bother writing it as an over. It only "works" in Japanese because furigana can tell you its pronounced that way, but its dumb even there. >Infinite Undiscovery Either an "undiscovery" is "lost", which would mean total amnesia (even walking, potentially even breathing), or an "undiscovery" is "not a discovery", which means the name is saying everything within is nothing new. (dis)honorable mention >Idea no Hi This one tries to make a English pun that does not actually work. The official name in "Day of the Idea" and 1: While "idea" in standard romanization, "イデア" isn't pronounced anything like the English "Idea" (as in thought) 2: "イデア" is a person, so the definite article here is just Engrish.

>>1594256 >>1594773 This wasn't nearly as much of a problem when these games came out. Especially Runner. Nobody was trying to do a web search for Commodore games. Even during the PS1 era, that wasn't where sales or advertising came from. The boxart would matter a lot more than the title. Hell, you're reminding of the show people now call "Batman: The Animated Series," which just did not actually have an explicit title when it was actually on. There is no text in the show's intro. You see a picture of Batman and that's all the kids need to know what they're watching. See a picture of that astronaut dude on the cover of Runner, and maybe kids will want to buy it. Titles can help or hurt, but it's not as big as you make it seem, especially due to not being able to search it with technology that didn't exist yet.
>>1056213 The gibberish name "Fenyx" is really the thing that takes it from "generic" to "awful". Even with "monster" (and presumably Olympic/Olympus) off limits, there's way better options for something based on Greek mythology.
(1.51 MB 640x915)Ninja Gaiden.png
>>1592242 On a similar note. Not a bad title by any means but completely nonsensical when you actually understand what it means. The original is of course Ninja Ryukenden which translates to something like Ninja: Dragon Sword. The American title, Ninja Gaiden (which no one in the US knew how to pronounce until The Wizard game out) is instead Ninja: Side Story. As a complete side note, the cover makes it looks like it's taking place right during the Nuclear War of 199X, and given the enemy and boss designs and even some of the music I'm pretty sure this is entirely intentional.

Stellar Blade Anonymous Id: 9ffbc5 No. 1130086 [Reply] [Last]
Are you excited for the PC release in June? I had it preordered and finished twice, and It's nice that more people will get to play Eve. We'll probably get some nice mods and even better graphics (the devs did phenomenal job with UE4, but still). Would also be nice if it gets a sequel.

There's an overlooked feature that I've noticed: there's no ray tracing used, yet the textures and other rendering tech makes it almost look like it's there. It's also running on Unreal Engine 4 instead of 5. Are there any mods that implement any of it for fun? Somehow the similar but (mostly) asset-flipped Bright Memory: Infinite meanwhile has ray tracing effects and runs on Unreal 4 too (the difference is that it's also on GOG).
Does this game play like any of the Nier games at all or are all the comparisons not to the gameplay? To be clear, I liked the movement and the "freeform" combat the most in both of them.
>>1597172 I'd say it plays very differently.

How do you beat a game? Anonymous Id: 0b2855 No. 1566257 [Reply]
What constitutes as one 'beating' a game? The answer isn't quite as simple as I'm making it sound. Do you beat a game when you get to the credits after defeating the final boss or level? Or do you beat a game once you've gotten all the achievements? Maybe even more than that? Do you complete a game truly only when you've seen all the content the game has to offer? Or, at least, all the known content? If a game lacks achievements and is on rails, does it only count as beating that game if you did so on the highest difficulty available?
18 posts and 2 images omitted.
I don't think there's one set measure of when a game is "beaten", but the broadest definition is when the credits roll after finishing the final bit of whatever story a game has, or completing all the basic objectives a game has in the case of sandbox games with defined objectives (factorio, satisfactory, etc). You can play a game enough to understand it without beating it, and depending on the game you can also beat the game without really understanding how it works too well. For example: Voices of the Void is considered beaten on day 50 of story mode due to there being no more story events and the game telling you such, but you can get a feel for the gameplay and the tone of the game far before that. Rougelikes often serve as an opposite example, but Risk of Rain is a good one, you can beat Risk of Rain without understanding fully the game's systems or how to play all the characters well. Hell, there's a character and some upgrades locked behind beating the game. And then you get to the topic of multiple endings. Again it depends on the game. Some are clearly meant to be played through one after another due to drastic differences between them and shorter play time, while some games having different endings with different content is to aid in giving the player a sense of choice and consequence, and making the story more interesting, like the SMT games or Fallout 1/2/NV, and is not meant to be played through to every ending. On the other hand, some games even expect you to play all the routes in order since it makes up one big story, like the Sonic Adventure games, the Touhou fighting games' story modes, and NIER games. Speaking of fighting games, those too are an oddity. Most have a story or arcade mode you can beat, sure, but it won't indicate mastery or even a basic understanding of the game depending on the game and how complex the AI is. Yet you'd still have technically "beaten" the game upon completing said story modes or beating arcade/whatever the main mode is. Doesn't make you good at said game or even give you an understanding of it beyond a very basic level in most cases, especially when playing against "normal" AI and not setting it to maximum.
>>1566591 True, I didn't think of edge cases like that But since they are only edge cases, I don't think it's correct to use them as a standard
I don't think I can define what it means to 'beat' a game in a way that encompasses all the various types of games with their own intricacies. But I know it when I beat it.

IKEMEN/Mugen Anonymous Id: 757034 No. 1223390 [Reply]
For eight (probably has been eight. Might be more. I don't remember.) years I've had this shitheap on my storage. I've recently upgraded my maintained 8mugen collection to IKEMEN, and I've thrown a shitload of characters into it over the years. Most, if not all, of the original 8mugen collection is still there. (Second pic is the original screenpack pic to jog your memory.) It's fifteen gigabytes and about 479 characters big. This means sharing it will be a difficulty. Only would be worth it if there's interest or any anons around who actually remember this shit. I changed the skin because there was no Ikemen compatible version. Picrel is a bit outdated as some characters that have black slots are bugged and needed fixing. Has a bunch of hidden/ai characters. Latter is completely or mostly unplayable (for humans.) Former is compressed into other characters. (gotta use the 'd' and 'w' keybinds set in the options menu on certain characters to access them. Like Goku. Neat Ikemen feature.) Also, IKEMEN/Mugen thread I guess. Quick FAQ <OP Install specific >Is [Character] in your install? I dunno. Flip a coin. It's 479 characters. There's 21 slots left so there is space for more. But it's already fucking 15 gigabytes. Technically infinite AI-only slots and multi-character slots. But they're all bound to one character. So Saber has Saber and Saber Alter bound to her, for instance. >Why the fuck is [Character] and not [Character] in your install?! If it's a matter of taste, I don't give a shit. If you want to include a certain roster, feel free. If lots of additions are made I'll upgrade the screen to 704 characters. If certain characters are shittier than others, suggest/add the better versions to replace the old ones. >Does everything work? Good question. Most characters, yes. Most stages, yes. There are numerous characters with small bugs that require text file changes to fix. I'm not even aware of them all. >Why share this if you don't have a link for it? Fifteen gigabytes. My upload speed is dogshit so I'm not going to upload it if no anons give a shit. It will take all day for me to upload.

How is the Ikemen rollback project going? Did it get merged into go, postponed? Haven't heard anything about it for a year or so.
>>1273063 Wait ikeman doesn't have rollback?
>>1271072 I know this post is several months old but it does make me wonder if there are any other archives dedicated to certain types, especially since I remember a certain R-18 edit of Akira Honjoji from a YouTube video that was taken down a long time ago and I don't know if that was preserved in some fashion.

Oh, my mistake. Virtuos isn't owned by Microshaft, they're a private company with thousands of employees and multiple studios. Briefly reading into them, they're not a studio but a collection of development houses. The layoffs are mainly affecting their Chinese branches, but some of the European devs who worked on Oblivion Remastered have been hit too.

Overated Videogames (? Anonymous Id: e1da8c No. 1567157 [Reply]
I've had a friend always telling me how Hollow Knight is the best possible Metroidvania out there when it's the only one he's ever played. Funnily enough, he disregards the genre defining franchises (Metroid and Castlevania) as "probably much worse" without having even seen gameplay of it, which is pretty annoying. I've played some of Metroid and Castlevania to know a bit about the genre and I've at least seen Hollow Knight gameplays and all I see is a Metroidvania knock-off with pattern-heavy bosses and the difficulty cranked up to Soulslike trial and error style. I can see how that's sort of "unique" but I don't see how that makes it a prime Metroidvania experience, would you agree with him on it being the best possible Metroidvania there is lol? Am I missing something? He also uses this fallacy of it being super popular so you know it's super good, but the thing that stuck with me the most is how he glorified the fucking double jump as such a special and unique mechanic, some bullshit about how it was programmed magnificently and how it had an excellent feel to it, when it's literally something almost every action game has. Makes you wonder if he's glorifying many more subtle aspects of the game. How do you call this behaviour? Do you have any more examples of this phenomena?

When does "retro" end? Anonymous Id: f6af5e No. 1507820 [Reply] [Last]
Are the PSP and DS "retro"? Are 360/PS3/Wii? I-mode phones? N-Gage? I think the Wii and early 360's lack of support for HDMI is a point in favor of those (first two years of games in 360's case, since I think everything after that put zero effort into making sub 720p being readable) being "retro". Some modern TV have started dropping support for these, so its non-trivial to play them.
