I thought about how every nation has a peak of power once in its entire existence. Why have the great powers of antiquity become so weak today? The most obvious examples are Germany - the empire of 1871-1918. The Manchus conquered China and ruled it for almost 300 years, creating the largest empire in Chinese history. The Turks had their own huge khaganate in the 6th century. But the most ridiculous case is, of course, the Armenians, one of the oldest peoples surviving to this day, who had a large empire stretching to the Mediterranean Sea, but since then have remained a people of merchants and doormats for their stronger neighbors.
